Jordan and Egypt boast some of the finest sights and most stunning scenery in the Middle East. This comprehensive tour allows us to explore the highlights of the region in depth – finding plenty to amuse kids and adults alike – and show that there’s much more to Jordan and Egypt than Petra and the Pyramids! Jordan’s rich heritage takes us from the Greco-Roman site at Jerash where kids can play at gladiators to the Nabatean civilisation of Petra and on to the Crusader castle at Kerak. Egypt too, though renowned for its Pharaonic monuments, is no less diverse, as revealed through our visits to the Monastery of St Catherine, the Pyramids and beautiful Egyptian Museum. In Sinai and Wadi Rum we enjoy the solitude of some of the most stunning desert scenery in the world, whilst on the coast at Dahab we have the chance to relax and snorkel, enjoying the rich marine life in the warm waters of the Red Sea.
Day 1: Join tour Amman (Jordan)

Arrive Amman and check into hotel.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+)

Day 2: Drive via Jerash, the Dead Sea and Ajlun to Madaba

A short drive brings us to the extensive ruins of Jerash, considered to be best preserved of the Decapolis Confederation of Roman cities. The triumphal arch gives way to colonnaded streets, fountains, a unique oval courtyard and impressive theatre. Later we head south to the Dead Sea. At 300m below sea level, this is the lowest point on earth. The amazingly high salt content (33%) of the shimmering waters makes it almost impossible to sink! After a dip in the warm waters (and possibly a mud bath!) we drive on to Ajlun and visit the fine Crusader castle.  From here we travel on to Madaba for our overnight stop.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 3: Drive to Petra

We set out today on one of the oldest trade routes in the world, the King’s Highway. Travelling south along this road that once carried the richly laden caravans of Solomon, we arrive at the lost city of Petra. Abandoned centuries ago, Petra is unique and unforgettable: a strange, otherworldly place, enhanced by the play of light and shadow, an altogether overwhelming place. We have the chance to walk through one of the most impressive and exciting sites of ancient history anywhere in the world. Winding down the dramatic Siq, we emerge at the famous ‘Khazneh’ (Treasury). Inside this remarkable city, our half day guided tour also takes us to the Theatre, Court of Justice, Urn Tomb, Triumphal Arch and the museum.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 4: In Petra

Our second day in Petra is left free to explore at your own pace and lose yourself in the atmosphere of the past. Steep paths lead to magnificent vantage points above the city, such as the Sacrificial High Place, and wind past overgrown tombs. Other worthwhile visits include Petra’s famous Monastery or a hike to the Royal Tombs.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 5: Visit Wadi Rum

Today we experience the beautiful area of Wadi Rum and some of the most spectacular desert scenery of the Middle East. This landscape of sandstone mountains and pink and white sands has been the home of the nomadic Bedouin people for generations and we hope to be able to see some of their camps during our visit. We have the option of taking a camel trek to take us deeper into the Wadi, seeing dramatic rock sculptures on our way. The area is steeped in the legends of Lawrence of Arabia and and some of the scenes of the famous film were shot here. Before our night under the starry sky, we may be lucky enough to witness a spectacular desert sunset. We sleep in a single, large, traditional goat hair tent (the best protection against typical desert extremes of hot and cold) which is laid out with rugs, mattresses, pillows and sleeping bags. The evening is normally spent around a campfire, with spectacular desert stars overhead: Washing facilities and WC are available at the camp.

Overnight Basic Camping (C) Included meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6: By Bus to Aqaba

Leaving Wadi Rum we walk a short distance before joining our bus and then we drive to Aqaba on the Red Sea. Here you have a chance to swim in the warm waters and go snorkelling or take a trip in a glass-bottom boat over the coral reef (optional).

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 7: Ferry to Nuweiba; drive to Dahab

This morning we make the trip across the Red Sea by ‘sea cat’ ferry to Egypt and the small town of Nuweiba on the Sinai Peninsula. On arrival we transfer to the laidback resort of Dahab.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 8: Snorkelling in Dahab

The next few days you can choose to either relax or have a more active time from optional diving or a camel trek. Today there is also an organised snorkelling trip to the Southern Oasis within the Nabq National Park. Qualified open-water divers may choose to take advantage of the numerous dive operators – please bring certification and log book. Your tour leader will be on hand to help make arrangements.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 9: In Dahab

Today is left totally free for you to choose how to spend your last day in Dahab.  Choices range from more snorkelling, more relaxing, more shopping or even a trip on a Camel in the Sinai, whatever suits your fancy.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 10: Drive to St. Catherines; ascent of Mount Sinai

Late this morning we drive to St Catherine’s to visit the monastery and make the optional ascent to the summit of Mt. Sinai to the spot where Moses is said to have received the ten commandments from God. Built in 342AD, this Greek Orthodox monastery is still active and houses many priceless treasures and religious artefacts. The reputed Burning Bush, whence God spoke to Moses, is located within the courtyard. After our visit we have the option to take a 2 and a half hour trek to the summit of Mt. Sinai where we can sit and watch the setting sun bathe the surrounding peaks in colour before descending and overnighting in St Catherine's.  Please note that there is the option to pay (locally) and upgrade to a room.

Overnight Standard Camping (C+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 11: Drive to Cairo

Today we depart the Sinai Peninsula and make our way over to mainland Egypt and the African continent.  We descend to the coast through the beautiful Wadi Feiran and there is the option to stop and swim before we continue via the Suez Canal, which joins Asia Minor and Africa, to Cairo for the remainder of our journey.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 12: In Cairo; optional visit to Islamic Cairo and Khan el Khalili

Africa’s largest capital, Cairo is situated mainly on the east bank of the Nile. Today we have all day to explore some of Cairo’s hidden treasures. You may chose to visit the illustrious Citadel, one of Saladin’s many strongholds during the Crusades period. There will also be the opportunity to go inside one of the many thousands of mosques in Cairo or simply wander the narrow back streets of this fascinating city. In the evening the area comes alive with the exoctic narrow alleyways and smells of Khan el Khalili market, the heart of Old Cairo and Islam in Egypt.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 13: In Cairo; visit Pyramids, Sphinx and Museum

Driving to Giza we see the Pyramids and Sphinx, among the most impressive man-made spectacles in the world. The Great Pyramid of Cheops is the largest of the group (originally 145m high with a square base 232m). Second is the Pyramid of Chephren (136m high, width 210m). The complex includes the Sphinx, a crouching lion with a human head carved from solid rock, and the splendid Granite Temple. We also visit the Egyptian Museum which contains the treasure of Tutankhamun.

Overnight Standard Hotel (H+) Included meals: Breakfast

Day 14: Tour ends Cairo

This was our eighth Explore holiday. All have in their different ways been hugely rewarding, but we thought we should write a review of this one because some of its qualities aren’t immediately apparent from the description in the brochure or on the web. The key factor is that the holiday is wonderfully varied. There is no point at which you become ‘cultured out’ or ‘walked out’, because each day brings different activities. The early stages of the tour, in Jordan, are at the sight-seeing end of the spectrum, and none the worse for that. Jerash is spectacular and huge and we were the only tourists there for the first hour or so which made it all the more pleasurable to walk round, and it was interesting to see the crusader castle at Ajlun although some in the group were dissapointed they hadn't seen Kerak which was on the original itinerary. But that’s followed by the weird experience of floating (you can scarcely call it swimming) in the Dead Sea. In truth, there is not much more to the Dead Sea than that: we were there for maybe a couple of hours, and that’s enough. The wow factor here was the most amazing sunset we had on the whole holiday. Shafts of goldern light pierced the clouds turning the sea into an almost oily shimmering kaleidescope of colour Then it was on to Petra, which perhaps epitomises the variety. The city is more extensive and varied than we had anticipated, and was truly stunning. But part of the delight for us was that quite a lot of it involved

What a fantastic trip. Petra was just amazing, we had one and a half days in Petra and we still didn't see everything. A lot of walking, hiking and amazing views. A must see place to go. Unfortunately for the locals there were not many tourists probably due to the trouble in the Middle East, however, this for us was great, everywhere was fairly quiet so we got to see the beauty of it all. Our tour leader, Ruth, was just brilliant. She took us to local places to eat and nothing was too much trouble for her. The dead sea was a great experience, you really do float! Cairo was also a great experience, the day before we were due to fly trouble flared up again but it didn't stop us going. The museum is fantastic, the Pyramids wonderful but the Sphinx is just jaw dropping. Snorkelling in the Red Sea was brilliant. I could have stayed there all day. The whole trip was fantastic, we did as much as we could and didn't stop until we dropped. Wadi Rum, fab, the Bazaar, colourful and noisy, full of life. Dahab, a great place for some relaxation. I cannot praise this trip enough. Had a fab tour leader and met some great people. Can't wait for my next trip!

This holiday was something I had planned for over a year. I was impressed with the city of Jearash and its ruins there. It was also fun to float in the Dead Sea and totally cover myself in the free mud. What was unexpected is when one of the local guides for Kerak was not very good, it was decided to obtain another guide at Petra who was so much better than him. The guide we had at Petra was quoted as being very good in "Lonely Planet" so this was an unexpected bonus to explore this great site. I also explored Petra by myself the next morning and it was really magical just walking down the Siq and having this all to myself. I was also lucky to capture some impressive photographs of the Treasury as the sun rose and the effect was great. My other highlights was Wadi Rum, camping in the desert and having a cooked meal by the local people. We then we entered the Sinai region of Egypt to snorkel in the Red Sea. My regret is not having an underwater camera case as I'm sure my pictures woudl have been brilliant by being so close to the coral, different coloured fish and the two small rays I saw too! I would recommend anyone who snorkels in the Red Sea to bring a underwater camera case. Climbing Mount Sinai for sunset was special and the light meant my pictures were great. We ended the tour at Cairo where we visited the Pyramids and Sphinx and were in awe of these monuments. We had our group photo taken against the backdrop of the three Pyramids which was great for all of us and fi
