Italy’s Lake District

Just hear the words “Italian lakes” and the imagination conjures long ribbons of gleaming deep blue water, snow-capped peaks, and opulent lakeside villas with rose-laden promenades. On this enchanting journey, we explore two legendary mountain lakes in Italy and one in Switzerland.
Just a mention of the words “Italian lakes” and the imagination conjures snowcapped peaks, long ribbons of deep blue water, and opulent lakeside villas with rose-laden promenades. We traverse two legendary mountain lakes in Italy and one in Switzerland on this journey. Connecting the lakes by ferry, we hike age-old paths to small stone hill villages with tiny chapels, walk up to an alpine refuge for spectacular lake views and a delicious lunch of traditional polenta uncia, follow trails to the artists’ colony of Carona, and hike through mystical chestnut woodlands to the haunting deserted village of Mulinesco. We’ve chosen the perfect bases for our hikes: magnificent Bellagio on Lake Como, Lake Lugano in Switzerland, and serene Orta San Giulio on romantic Lake Orta.

What the Trip is Like: This trip is rated Level 3, Moderate. We enjoy day walks and hikes of 2-5 hours over variable hill and mountain trails, with occasional short, steep sections. We will carry just a daypack. Sturdy, well broken-in hiking boots are necessary for the rural trails of this area. The meals included in the itinerary will be taken at the hotels where we are staying or at restaurants in the towns. For dinners "on your own," the Trip Leader will be happy to advise you on, or accompany you, to local restaurants and trattorias. Please note that in Europe, the dinner hour is considerably later than what it is in the US. We do our best to secure early reservations for our groups, but most often the evening meal will be at 7:30 PM.

ARRIVAL / DEPARTURE: The group hotel in Como, Italy, is the meeting point for the journey. A group transfer will be provided to the Milan / Malpensa Airport after breakfast on Day 7. Our Arrival & Departure Logistics memo, included in your confirmation packet, has further information. Trip members make their own arrangements for airline flights. Suggested flight routings and airlines are included in our Arrival & Departure Logistics memo. Once the international flights have been booked, please fax (1-510-558-2489) or email (info@wildernesstravel.com) us a copy so that we can inform the Trip Leader of your flight times. Please include your Trip Name and Trip Dates with your flight information. Due to airline schedules, an extra overnight may be necessary at either the start or end of your trip. This expense would not be covered by the trip cost—it is an “on your own” expense. We are happy to book extra hotel nights for you at the group hotel.

Note: The first and last name on your airline ticket must match the name on your passport exactly, otherwise you may be denied boarding. Please remember this when reserving your flights. In addition, your passport must be valid for at least six months after your date of return to the US (in most cases).
Day 1: Como, Italy
We meet at 4:30 p.m. at our hotel in Como, the silk capital of Europe and a city whose grand Belle Epoque hotels and lakefront promenades lend it a 19th century elegance. Here life revolves around the Piazza Cavour, with its steamer landing and sidewalk cafes. The town of Como rests at the very edge of the lake, hemmed in by the surrounding tall mountains that drop sharply into the green waters. This huge lake has three distinct branches and is more than two miles wide at its widest point. We gather for a trip briefing and welcome dinner this evening. Overnight in Como...D.
Lodging Albergo Terminus
Description This “Belle Epoque” hotel is located center stage right on Como’s lakefront and a five-minute walk to the Duomo and Piazza Cavour. An early 19th century manor house that has been carefully renovated, it has 40 guest rooms, each decorated in its own style. The cozy bar feels like a private club, and in fine weather, you can dine by candlelight on the terrace overlooking the lake with the scent of jasmine in the air. And after a long flight, it’s great to work out in the fitness room, relax in the sauna, or enjoy a massage.
Day 2: Lenno / Villa Balbianello / Bellagio
This morning we take a hydrofoil to the village of Lenno and then a skiff to Villa Balbianello, one of the most romantic settings on the entire lake, set on the tip of a wooded promontory. A magical setting of terraced gardens and marble statuary, the villa is an Italian National Trust property that originated as a Francescan convent in the 1200s and was converted into a villa in the 18th century. Director George Lucas filmed scenes of one of his Star Wars movies here, and scenes from Casino Royale, the James Bond film, were shot here as well. Later we take a skiff to Bellagio, considered to be the pearl of the lake villages. On arrival at Bellagio, our van meets us to take us up to Perlo, where we enjoy a picnic lunch in the most spectacular setting on the entire lake.
After lunch, a scenic walk brings us down to Bellagio via the Port of Loppia and the monumental Villa Melzi gardens, the finest example of neoclassical villa architecture in this part of Lombardy. Passing through the Loppia, we see the last two great cargo sailboats on the lake. These gondole, as they are known, are considered national monuments and resemble Chinese junks. Beyond Loppia, we cross the great swath of grassland running from one side of the promontory to the other, all property of the Villa Guilia, once owned by the King of Belgium, and later by the Prince of Flanders.
In the late afternoon, we enjoy a village walk through Bellagio itself, which has one of the most dramatic settings in all of Europe. With its rose-laden belvederes and villas, it has been a cherished locale since the days of the Roman Empire. Mark Twain, Flaubert, Longfellow, Shelley, and Liszt all enjoyed sojourns in this town. The village lies at the very tip of the so-called Larian Triangle, the dramatic land mass that divides the lake into three distinct branches. From our hotel we enjoy spectacular views of the Grigne Alps to the east, and below, we can see the fishing boats that fill the colorful waterfront in the town quarter of Pescallo. Overnight in Bellagio...BLD.
Lodging Villa Belvedere
Description Set on a hillside above Lake Como and just a 5- to 10-minute walk from town (about the time it takes to eat a scoop of gelato), the Hotel Belvedere offers a haven of comfort, not to mention incredible picture-postcard views of the lake, the Grigne Alps, and the fishing boats that fill Bellagio’s colorful waterfront. Owned and managed by the same family since 1880, the hotel retains a welcoming atmosphere and is surrounded by extensive terraced lawns, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, and solarium (there is also a small but pleasant spa with sauna and steam rooms). Fifty-nine guest rooms and five suites are located in three buildings on the property, with many rooms offering a terrace and all featuring the amenities of a modern hotel. Both the indoor and outdoor restaurants offer panoramic views of the lake and mountains.
Day 3: Mount San Primo / Suira / Bellagio
With a lift to the trailhead, we enjoy a hike toward the highest peak in the area, Mount San Primo, at 5,528 feet. Our hike brings us among fruit orchards, chestnut and beech woods, and high summer pastures and then up to the mountain refuge of Martina for spectacular lake views and a hot lunch. For lunch, we enjoy delicious traditional foods like polenta uncia, a rustic corn meal with rye flour and several kinds of melted cheeses with garlic. We can slip into the kitchen to watch these mountain cooks make this savory dish. Depending on the season, we also enjoy porcini mushrooms, fresh goat cheese, the local dried lake fish—missoltini—and traditional mountain sweets like the cake called miascia, made with fresh mint and walnuts. After lunch, we visit a private museum in the kitchen of an old village home in the hamlet of Suira, part of Bellagio. This delightful museum was put together by a young and enterprising resident, Lucia, and is dedicated to the traditional folk cultures of the region. Among many other things, we learn about silk worms and silk, an important cottage industry for centuries in the peasant culture. We enjoy a pleasant walk back to Bellagio. Dinner is on your own this evening. Overnight in Bellagio...BLD.

Lake Como: The lake’s distinctive "Y" shape was caused by the massive rocky mountain of San Primo. This peak split the advancing Adda Glacier during the Pleistocene era, forming the two branches of the lake. When the glacier receded, these profound valleys filled with water, creating Europe's deepest lake. Evidence of this glacial period is most evident in the abundance of massi erratici, or boulders of a completely different geologic composition than others found in the area. The boulders were deposited here after being dragged by the advancing glacier.

Both the indoor and outdoor restaurants offer panoramic views of the lake and mountains.
Day 4: Menaggio / Lake Lugano, Switzerland / San Salvatore
A car ferry brings us across Como to Menaggio, another lovely lakeside resort. From here, a short drive brings us across the border into Switzerland to cosmopolitan Lugano on Lake Lugano. This famous town is the principal city of Ticino, the Italian canton of Switzerland. A funicular ride up to Mount San Salvatore, 3,000 feet above Lugano, brings us magnificent views (and in clear weather, of lakes Como, Lugano, Maggiore, and Varese). From here we hike through forests and meadows to the artists’ colony of Carona for a picnic lunch in a lovely 16th century loggia next to the Baroque church of San Giorgio. Afterwards, there is free time to stroll the lakeside promenade. Overnight in Lugano....BLD.
Lodging Hotel du Lac
Description It’s all about the views at the Hotel du Lac, the only one on the lake side of the road circling Lake Lugano. All guest rooms face the lake and enjoy splendid panoramic views, and since this is Switzerland, feather comforters are the norm. Once a silk house, it was converted into a hotel in the 1920s, and has a friendly staff. The bar, veranda, and terrace are great places to meet up with friends and it’s about a 20-minute walk to the center of town. The hotel has been in the Kneschaurek family since 1920.
Day 5: Cannobio / Carmine Superiore / Isola Bella / Lake Orta, Italy
We get an early start via ferry to the medieval village of Cannobio, with its traditional lakeside houses. Cannobio was an independent city-state in the 12th century. A delightful morning walk brings us to the small stone village of Carmine Superiore, with its ancient church and fine views over the lake. This village marks the earlier site of a castle built by the Visconti family, the Lords of Milan, sometime after the year 1000 AD. The 12th century church here has remarkable 14th century frescoes and forms the core of this tiny village. We enjoy our picnic in the courtyard of the church overlooking Lake Maggiore.
After lunch we descend to Carmine Inferiore, transfer to Stresa, and take a private taxi boat to the island of Isola Bella to explore the Villa Borromeo and its grounds, now a world famous botanical garden. Later we drive to Lago d'Orta and the enchanting village of Orta San Giulio, with its café-lined piazza set center stage on the lake. Orta San Giulio will be our base for the next two nights....BL

Villa Borromeo: Most of the island of Isola Bella was bought by the Borromeo family in the 1600s and transformed into one of the most lavish and opulent displays of baroque architecture and private wealth in all of Europe. With a ten-tiered terrace garden inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, this immense summer residence covers two thirds of the entire island and could house up to 2,000 people in its heyday. The palace also contains six ornate grottos where guests could escape the summer heat.
Lodging Hotel San Rocco
Description The Hotel San Rocco, superbly set right on the edge of magical Lake Orta, is within walking distance of just about everything in this picturesque little town. A former 17th century nunnery, the hotel has been beautifully restored and renovated over the years and now offers 80 spacious and stylishly furnished guest rooms with all the modern amenities. The welcoming swimming pool is the perfect place to relax and take in the views; beside it are steps leading down to the lake for those who prefer a freshwater swim. Don’t miss having a late afternoon drink on the waterfront terrace—a nice way to enjoy Italy’s la dolce vita.
Day 6: Orta San Giulio Hilltowns
Lake Orta, flowing north to feed Lago Maggiore, offers a secluded world apart. Its quiet beauty has charmed writers including French novelist Honore de Balzac, who described the lake as "grey pearl in a green jewel-box." We walk though the village this morning as we begin our hike through the enchanting hill villages above Orta San Giulio. Skirting the lake, we join an ancient footpath that leads up to Priscola and on to Legro, with its fine fountain and a traditional public washing basin in the main square. From Legro we continue on to Lortallo on the slopes of Monte Alto. With lovely country farmhouses, a 13th century tower, and the impressive Villa Broglio, Lortallo stands as the gateway to the sacred mountain and the nature reserve of Monte Mesma. We enjoy our picnic lunch in the garden grounds of the Francescan convent of Monte Mesma. Later we hike through woodlands toward pastel-colored medieval town of Armeno, with numerous monumental villages from the 17th and 18th centuries. Time permitting, we visit the hilltop sanctuary of the Sacro Monte d'Orta, with its complex of twenty 17th century chapels, all dedicated to St. Francis and containing statues and elaborate sets depicting episodes from the life of Italy's most beloved saint. These life-sized sets were created to educate and inspire the largely illiterate population of the times. We finish our walk along the lake, with the afternoon free for a swim in the lake or at our hotel pool. We gather in the evening for our farewell dinner beside the lake at Orta San Giulio...BLD.
