Botswana Wildlife Safari

Botswana’s diverse ecosystems are astounding, from the savannas and woodlands of magnificent Chobe National Park, sheltering the world’s largest elephant herds, to the wildlife paradise of the Okavango Delta, an exquisite wetland surrounded by the great Kalahari thirst lands.
Botswana’s diverse ecosystems are astounding, from the savannas and woodlands of magnificent Chobe National Park, sheltering the world’s largest herds of elephants, to the wildlife paradise of the Okavango Delta, an exquisite wetland surrounded by the Kalahari thirstlands. We track game by 4WD vehicle, by riverboat, and—a Botswana specialty—by mokoro (canoe), all in a breathtaking mix of Botswana’s most beautiful habitats. Our safaris offer a unique combination of exquisite lodges and mobile tented camps—this is the way to experience Botswana’s wonders! No one else gets you this close to the action—and in such comfort! Experience Botswana on this Classic Safari or on one of our special seasonal expeditions that bring us deep into the hidden worlds of the Okavango Delta and the remote Kalahari Desert.

What the Trip is Like: This trip is rated Level 2, easy to moderate. It is a vehicle-based camping safari, with 8-12 nights camping in the bush (depending upon itinerary) and other nights in basic bungalows. It will enjoyed by anyone in reasonably good health. There are some long driving days over rough roads and game tracks. Our mobile tented camping safaris in Botswana provide a true bush experience without sacrificing comfort. We travel by Toyota 4WD Land Cruiser “go-anywhere” safari vehicles stocked with cold drinks and books on flora, fauna, and avifauna. They carry five trip members per vehicle, with guaranteed window seating. Our comfortable walk-in tents feature canvas beds, linens, mirror, tent lamps, chairs, and washbasins. Behind each tent are separate toilet and hot water shower tents. Our crew sets up camp and prepares all meals. You'll find camping delightful and very comfortable, and you will appreciate how close to nature you feel, away from the lights and distractions of the lodges. Food is served in a comfortable dining tent.

TRAVEL INSURANCE: Travelers to Botswana are required to purchase full medical, emergency evacuation, and repatriation insurance that covers you for at least $25,000, plus Trip Cancellation Insurance. Due to the lack of advanced medical facilities in Botswana, you may need to be evacuated to Johannesburg or even back to the US in case of serious illness or injury. Evacuation by air may or may not be possible, depending on the location. If you require evacuation from a trip, you are responsible for payment of all evacuation costs. You must pay evacuation costs directly to the evacuation service prior to the evacuation. Acceptable forms of payment are typically cash or travelers checks. Credit cards may or may not be accepted. If you are able to use your credit card, be aware that a service charge will be assessed in addition to the actual cost of the evacuation. You must bring one of these forms of payment with you in case of emergency. You will need to contact your insurance company for procedures and reimbursement policy.
DAY 1: MAUN, BOTSWANA
Upon midday arrival in the town of Maun, Botswana, trip members on the recommended flight are met at the airport and transferred to Royal Tree Lodge. Set on a game farm outside Maun, the lodge’s classic yet simple chalet-type tent accommodations offer a wonderful welcome to Botswana and a delightful opportunity to slip into the world of safari. The remainder of the day is free to rest and recover from any jet lag. We gather for our group orientation and welcome dinner in the evening...D.
Lodging Royal Tree Lodge
Description Set on a game farm outside Maun, Royal Tree Lodge offers a wonderful welcome to Botswana. The lodge has seven spacious, tastefully furnished tents on raised decks, complete with en suite bath and open-air shower. The lodge’s main thatched complex, opening onto a large tree-shaded deck, features a bar, lounge, dining room, and a small swimming pool. Several self-guided walking trails offer a chance to stretch your legs after a long flight (the farm is fenced off, so there are no predators in this private reserve), or just relax on the deck with your first Botswana beer and watch the birds frolic in the trees.
DAYS 2-3: MOREMI GAME RESERVE: XAKANAXA
Today we travel to the Moremi Game Reserve, the protected portion of the Okavango Delta ecosystem, gameviewing as we go. Located in the northeast corner of the Delta, Moremi is an ornithologist’s paradise, with almost every species of central-southern African bird, including bee-eaters, darters, colorful kingfishers, and a variety of waterfowl. We may also spot wildlife like tsessebe and Burchell’s zebra, along with ostrich and predators such as lion, wild dog, and spotted hyena. The mopane tree is one of the most widespread in southern Africa, its butterfly-shaped leaves and seeds offering a crucial source of protein for wildlife. Elephants are particularly partial to mopane leaves. It should be noted that this is the first national park in southern Africa to have been created and administered by an African tribe living on their own land, the BaTawana. Our campsite is at Xakanaxa, on the tip of a mopane “tongue” jutting into the delta: a beautiful setting of secret pools, tall forest, and open grassland. This mix of ecological niches ensures a good variety of birds and game, and we explore by 4WD vehicle and boat. Our campsite is ours alone (though we are sometimes joined by hippos that come out at night to feed on the grass near our tents!), and the enchanting sound of bell frogs serenades us to sleep. Overnights are in our private mobile camp, offering an authentic bush atmosphere that no safari lodge or permanent tented camp can offer...BLD each day.
Lodging Botswana Wildlife—Mobile Safari Camping
Description Our Botswana Safari is a true Hemingway-style mobile safari where we wend our way slowly north from Maun to Victoria Falls accompanied by the same camp crew and camping equipment throughout. Our private campsites offer relaxing solitude and an authentic bush atmosphere while still maintaining a great deal of comfort. We sleep in walk-in canvas tents, approximately 10 by 14 feet with attached shower and toilet tent, a small veranda area with camp chairs, a small table, and a washbasin. Battery-powered lights provide illumination. Our camp is fully catered, with three-course meals, including wine and soft drinks, prepared daily by our camp chefs. Laundry service is included. When we move camps every two to three days, the camp crew breaks down the camp after we depart, and then while we are out on enjoying the fantastic wildlife, they go ahead in a large 4WD truck to set up the new camp before our arrival. It doesn’t get any better!
DAYS 4-5: OKAVANGO DELTA
The 800-mile-long Okavango is “the river which never finds the sea,” disappearing into a remarkable maze of lagoons, channels, and islands to create the Okavango Delta. This morning we take a 6-hour boat ride from our Xakanaxa camp to Xugana Lodge in the remote western corner of the Okavango Delta. Situated on the Maunachira river system, this deluxe lodge features comfortable en suite chalets and a beautiful bar and dining area overlooking the Xugana lagoon. It’s the perfect base for exploring the Okavango on foot and by motorboat and mokoro (a dugout canoe navigated by a skilled poler). During our excursions, we should see bushbuck, a plethora of birds, lechwe (a semi-aquatic antelope), and perhaps even buffalo, elephant, and the shy sitatunga, another antelope adapted to this watery realm. As we glide the water lily–filled waterways aboard our mokoro, we enjoy the calm solitude of this quintessential delta setting. Overnights at Xugana Lodge...BLD each day.
Lodging Xugana Island Lodge
Description Set deep in the heart of the Okavango Delta on the edge of a lovely lagoon, Xugana is the perfect base for exploring Okavango’s “water” side on excursions by mokoro canoes. Each comfortable reed and thatch chalet faces the lagoon and features en suite facilities and private viewing decks. A beautiful bar and open-air dining area overlook the lagoon—where the sunsets are out of this world—and there is a small plunge pool to cool off in. The lodge is also known for its excellent walking trails.
DAYS 6-7: MOREMI GAME RESERVE: KHWAI RIVER FLOODPLAIN
From Xugana, we leave the water side of the delta behind, and fly by charter aircraft to Moremi for two more days of wildlife exploration along the lovely Khwai River floodplain. Our exclusive mobile camp is set along the Khwai River where the northern tributary of the Okavango River disappears into the sand. By June, when all the rain-filled pans dry up, wildlife is attracted to this area in ever-greater numbers. Overnights at private mobile camp...BLD each day.

DAYS 8-9: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK: SAVUTI CHANNEL
On Day 8, we leave the Okavango ecosystem and make the long drive to the southern section of Chobe National Park, where we explore the Savuti River area, a landscape of mopane woodland that’s filled with game. The Savuti Channel itself dried up in 1980, but its marsh is now a vast grassland attracting migrating herds of herbivores. This is one of the best places to find lion, leopard, and other predators and their prey—large herds of giraffe, kudu, vervet monkey, and baboon. Our mobile camp—for our group alone—is set along the banks of the dry Savuti Channel, but near a permanent waterhole that features excellent game viewing...BLD each day.

DAYS 10-11: CHOBE NATIONAL PARK: SERONDELLA
We move on to the Serondella area, in the northeast portion of Chobe National Park, famous for its elephant population numbering in the tens of thousands. The elephants here are active and vocal, shaking their heads in mock charges and sparring with each other. We take game drives among the large herds of elephant, buffalo, zebra, and wildebeest. Serondella is also home to the Chobe bushbuck and puku, two of the more rare species of antelope found in Botswana. While here we take an afternoon river cruise on the Chobe River to view animals as they come down to drink before sunset. The light at this time of day is incredible! Camping overnights...BLD each day.

DAY 12: LIVINGSTONE / VICTORIA FALLS
Crossing the border into Zambia, our safari concludes at Victoria Falls, one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders. The huge Zambezi River is more than a mile wide when it drops 300 feet into a sheer chasm to create this thundering cascade. Above the falls, the river is placid with palm-fringed islands and rainforested banks. In 1860, David Livingstone was the first Westerner to report the falls’ existence, and since then, it has attracted visitors from around the world. There are numerous activities available (at extra cost) at Victoria Falls, from a relaxing sunset cruise on the Zambezi or the sightseeing “flight of the Angels” over the falls. Overnight at Royal Livingstone Hotel, a colonialstyle accommodation located within the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a World Heritage Site overlooking the mighty Victoria Falls...BLD.
Lodging Royal Livingstone Hotel
Description The Royal Livingstone has a location that simply can’t be beat—just a 10-minute walk from mighty Victoria Falls, one of the world’s natural wonders. It’s right on the edge of the river, and the long, shaded sundeck is a great place for a drink and uninterrupted views of the Zambezi River and the huge spray of the falls in the distance. Although a lot larger than the hotels we usually choose, it is well-laid-out complex and the grounds are often full of wildlife from monkeys to giraffes and zebra. The buffet breakfast here is a lavish spread. The Royal Livingstone was rated among Africa’s Top 10 Hotels by readers of Travel & Leisure.
DAY 13: LIVINGSTONE / DEPART
The morning is free for optional activities. In the afternoon, transfer to airport for departure on homeward-bound flights...B.

This was one of our best trips in over nine years of international travel over three continents. The trip leader, Alwyn Myburgh, is the best "biological" guide that we have experienced - his field skills and African knowledge was outstanding.

We had a fantastic trip. It was our first trip to Africa and when people ask what we saw in terms of wildlife, we tell them to ask us what we didn't see. The trip was so much more than we imagined.
