Adventuring in South Africa

Stunning seascapes along the turquoise Indian Ocean, misty mountains graced with Bushman rock paintings, prime savannas teeming with big game—South Africa is an extraordinary country with the most diverse landscapes on the African continent.
Stunning seascapes along the turquoise Indian Ocean, misty mountains graced with Bushman rock paintings, prime savannas teeming with big game— South Africa is an extraordinary country with the most diverse landscapes on the African continent. We explore along “the fairest Cape,” hike trails along breathtaking Tsitsikamma Coast and head into the remote Drakensbergs Mountains of Zulu country. For a grand finale, we set out for three days of phenomenal game viewing at one of the most exclusive private reserves in the world, Londolozi, enjoying the ultimate in wildlife viewing as we encounter lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo, and cheetah in the spectacular habitats of Greater Kruger National Park.

What the Trip is Like: The trip is rated Level 2+, moderate to strenuous. This is a luxury hotel-and-lodge-based adventure tour with several days of walking and hiking. Some of the hikes could be considered a bit strenuous, but there are easier walking options available. Although this is not a particularly rigorous trip, we still recommend that each participant undertake a preparatory program of physical conditioning. Daily walking or regular hiking, jogging, stair-climbing, and so forth are excellent preparatory exercises. .

Tour Costs: Due to the recent strength of the US dollar against the South African Rand, we can offer you an extraordinary savings on our 2012 departures: $1300 discount per person! Act soon—the discount lasts only as long as this current rate does!
Days 1-2: Cape Town, South Africa / Cape Grace Hotel
Upon arrival in Cape Town, we meet our Trip Leader and transfer to the elegant 5-star Cape Grace, our hotel for overnight. We have our group orientation and welcome dinner this evening.

Long regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Cape Town is southern Africa’s most romantic city. Few cities in the world can match its splendid setting along the spine of the mountainous Cape Peninsula. When Sir Francis Drake, completing his circumnavigation of the globe, rounded the Cape, he wrote of “the fairest Cape in the whole circumference of the world.” The first European to land in Table Bay was Antonio de Saldanha in 1503. He climbed its picturesque mountain and named it Table Mountain for its unique appearance. In the early 1600s, beautiful Table Bay became the halfway stopover for the Dutch East India Company before the settlement of Cape Town existed. The view of the Cape that entranced early mariners over the centuries is still here—a spectacular amphitheater formed by Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain, and Lion’s Head to the west. The summit plateau provides breathtaking views of Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula, and at night in the summer months, the mountain is floodlit. This lively city today is also a rare cultural gem, an amalgamation of African, Indonesian, Indian, French, Dutch, British and German cultures.

On Day 2, we visit a variety of fascinating sites: the Victoria and Alfred waterfront (named for the Queen and her second son) where Cape Town’s maritime roots lie; Cape Point Nature Reserve, which stretches over fynboscovered hills of the Cape Peninsula into the Atlantic; Table Mountain, one of the most dominant and spectacular urban geographic features in the world and also an incredible environment for hundreds of species of endemic flora; and the National Botanical Gardens at Kirstenbosch, where 7,000 species are cultivated on 1,000 acres. Overnights are at the Cape Grace Hotel, set on its own private quay on the waterfront...D on Day 1, BL on Day 2
Lodging Cape Grace Hotel
Description The Cape Grace has understated elegance and a unique location on its own private quay on the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. Not surprisingly, it is a member of the prestigious Small Luxury Hotels of the World. The rooms and common areas are very stylish, the staff is superbly trained, and there are wonderful views of the harbor, marina, and Table Mountain. This hotel is extraordinary for its tasteful decor and exceptional location. Readers of Condé Nast Traveler voted the Cape Grace “the best hotel in the world” in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards.
Day 3: The Garden Route / Tsitsikamma National Park
South Africa’s famed “Garden Route”—with its panorama of mountains, towering bluffs, indigenous forests, tiny coastal towns, beaches, wetlands, and bays—stretches along the southern coast from Mossel Bay to the Tsitsikamma Forest and Storms River. Our drive takes most of the day but is a beautiful one, from the rolling hills of wine country to the breathtaking seascapes of the Garden Route. Lunch is en route at the picturesque seaside town of Knysna, nestled between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. We have an opportunity to do a little shopping for local handicrafts, then continue toward the spectacular marine reserve of Tsitsikamma National Park in the late afternoon.

Our enchanting and unique accommodation for the next three nights is at The Fernery at Forest Ferns, set on 250 acres bordering Tsitsikamma National Park...BLD
Lodging The Fernery at Forest Ferns
Description This remote retreat surrounded by forests and farms has individual chalets overlooking the gorge of the Storms River. The beautifully furnished chalets, all in private and serene settings along the river, have wraparound decks, sitting rooms, and elegant bathrooms with claw-foot tubs. Meals at the lodge include ingredients grown in The Fernery’s own garden. The Fernery is part of an environmentally friendly fern-harvesting farm that employs local people and ships cut ferns to flower shops across Europe.
Days 4-5: Tsitsikamma National Park
Our hikes are on the most spectacular trails in Tsitsikamma National Park, including the Otter Trail, which features pristine indigenous forest and magnificent coastal scenery rich with tidepool life. Some parts of the Otter Trail offer challenging hiking (boulder hopping along one section), but there are always alternative routes, or options to relax and enjoy the incredible setting of the lodge. Tsitsikamma’s extraordinarily rich diversity of habitats includes 250 bird species along with lovely plant life from wild orchids to many species of lily. Overnights at The Fernery...BLD each day

Day 6: The Drakensbergs
A mid-morning drive brings us to Port Elizabeth, where we catch a scheduled flight to Durban, then drive to our lodge, with the spires of the Drakensbergs rising not far away. Overnight at Montusi Mountain Lodge, with one of the most splendid settings in the Drakensberg Mountains. Montusi means “mountain of mists,” and this family-run lodge has uninterrupted views of the Drakensberg. The atmosphere here is remote and serene, and the spacious thatch-roofed cottages each have a large bedroom, sitting room, fireplace, and shaded patio. Many meals are served on an open-air patio with views across the rolling green lawns to the towering Drakensberg...BLD

Day 7: The Drakensberg Mountains
The Drakensbergs are one of the most beautiful mountain massifs in the world—an extraordinary fantasia of cliffs, buttresses, and sharp ridges. Named the “Dragon’s Mountains,” this massif forms part of the Great Escarpment of South Africa, which falls away from the inland plateau. Its natural beauty makes this area a hiker’s paradise. Today’s 10-mile hike brings us into the Amphitheatre along a gradual trail through a spectacular gorge. The hike is comfortably paced and takes place at the moderate altitudes of 4,000 to 6,000 feet. Many types of birds can also be seen, from the mighty lammergeier to tiny sunbirds. Overnights at Montusi Mountain Farmhouse...BLD

Days 8-10: Londolozi / Sabi Sand Game Reserve
We drive to Durban and catch a scheduled flight to the Kruger area, then a small charter flight to Londolozi Camp in Sabi Sand Game Reserve, 230 square miles of pristine African bush adjoining famed Kruger National Park. Sabi Sand is undoubtedly the most prestigious game park in South Africa, located on the southwest corner of Kruger National Park. There are no restricting fences between Sabi Sand and Kruger, allowing ancient migration movements of wildlife from the foothills of the Libombo Mountains in the east to the Drakensberg Mountains in the west.

Two perennial rivers service Sabi Sand with a valuable water supply. The Sand River flows through the reserve from northwest to southeast, and the Sabi River flows on the southern boundary, which ensures that this area enjoys one of the highest and most biodiverse wildlife populations of any area in Africa. Such is the environment that the wildlife, save the migrating birds, remains in its territory all year round.

With our game spotter and game tracker, our daily activities include game drives in open 4WD vehicles as well as night drives. On optional bush walks, we follow spoor in search of wildlife and, just as importantly, enjoy a chance to explore the fascinating minutiae of safari life—dung beetles, butterflies, and game tracks—which normally cannot be seen from a vehicle. While here, we can expect to see the “Big Five”: lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino, and leopard, as well as giraffe, zebra, and other wildlife, and the birdwatching is amazing.

After dark, a new world opens up as we look for nocturnal wildlife including elusive genets and perhaps leopards on the hunt. And because we are on private land, not in a national park, we can drive off-road to track game in the bush, allowing for much closer sightings. To top it off, there are many fewer guests in this exclusive private reserve, so there are few (or often no) other vehicles at our animal sightings.

Our overnights are at Londolozi Camp, renowned for its progressive ecotourism practices. Situated on the Sand River in Sabi Sand Game Reserve, it is part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast and growing wildlife sanctuary, currently covering six million acres and incorporating famous Kruger National Park. Breeding herds of elephant and buffalo roam throughout the Londolozi area, while white rhino and lion concentrations are among the highest recorded on the African continent. However, it is the truly remarkable relationship developed over three decades between free-ranging leopards and Londolozi’s ranger-trackers that makes Londolozi world famous... BLD each day

Leopards at Sabi Sand Game Reserve: Although they are known as the “elusive” wild cat, hardly a day goes by at Sabi Sand without these predatory stalkers being seen. While these cats are not tame by any means, they have become accustomed to vehicles and take no notice of them. This provides an ideal viewing opportunity, as the leopards permit safari vehicles to follow them through the bush even while hunting. Superb photographic opportunities frequently present themselves as leopards feed or lounge in trees, move alongside open safari vehicles, or stretch their limbs on termite mounds. Leopard frequently patrol the vicinity of the camp after dark, and their distinctive, hoarse calls add great excitement to the experience of the African night.
Lodging Londolozi Varty Camp
Description Londolozi, meaning “protector of all living things” in Zulu, was the first game reserve in the world to be accorded Relais & Chateaux status. The camp started as a hunting lodge in the 1920s and it is one of the most deluxe safari accommodations in Africa, setting the standards for decor, luxury, and personal service. Londolozi has been named Top Safari Resort in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards. Lodging at Londolozi is divided into five distinct camps. We stay at Varty Camp, which has eight luxurious chalets. Londolozi’s chalets featuring striking African designs, canopied beds, and inlaid mosaic floors. The chalets are air-conditioned and have elegant bathrooms that include a grand bathtub with a wonderful view. The service is excellent, from the restaurant staff to the wonderful rangers and trackers that accompany you on the game drives. Dinners are served under the stars in the large boma (enclosed outdoor area). With over 40,000 acres of private land to explore and an unfenced border with famous Kruger National Park, the “big five” gameviewing is out of this world. Leopard sightings are famous here and it’s thrill to photograph these beautiful creatures as they prowl the bush and lounge in the tree limbs.
