Day 1: Avignon
Meet your Backroads Trip Leaders (the folks wearing Backroads T-shirts) at 11:30 a.m. at the Avignon TGV train station. Please arrive dressed in your biking clothes with your rain gear handy, or have your gear packed in a small separate bag so you can change before the ride.

Shuttle to Château de Rochegude: 1 Hour

Biking Options:
Rochegude Loop: 23 Miles* (900’ elevation gain)
Col de Debat Loop: 32 Miles (1,800’)
*with shuttle

Bienvenue en Provence! After meeting we shuttle to our stylish hotel, Château de Rochegude, where we enjoy a picnic overlooking the vineyards of the Côtes du Rhône. Following lunch your Backroads Trip Leaders fit your bike and give a brief talk on riding techniques and safety. Then head off on today’s route, which introduces you to the joys of biking in Provence. With views of robust vineyards and quaint small villages, pedal alongside rolling lavender fields through the town of Cairanne, a growing name in Côtes du Rhône wines. Take a break from your bike to have a coffee or a glass of wine in the town square. Then, if 23 miles feels like enough for the first day, you can shuttle back to the hotel. But if you’re just getting started, get there by winding through the vineyards and quiet villages of the Drôme. Set within the walls of a fortified castle, Château de Rochegude offers a taste of 12th-century France while pampering you with modern-day luxuries.

Settle into your elegant room, then cool off with a swim or perhaps explore the château’s grounds. Tonight we gather for a wine reception and celebrate our first evening together with a gourmet dinner at our château. The selection of French and international dishes is complemented by an extensive wine list featuring local domaines.

Description Built in the 12th century, this enchanting fortress presides over the Côtes du Rhône, and is a perfect example of Renaissance charm and French architecture. A Relais & Châteaux member. (pool, tennis)
Day 2: Côtes du Rhône
This morning we return to the venerable Côtes du Rhône, biking back through Cairanne and continuing through Rasteau and Roaix; all three villages have been awarded Côtes du Rhône Village AOC status for producing a superior quality wine under strict criteria. Make your way to Vaison-laRomaine, a lively town tucked along the banks of the Ouvèze River. Resting on the former site of an ancient Roman city, Vaison-la-Romaine is renowned for its elaborate 2nd-century ruins. Atop a steep rocky spur in the town’s center is the Haute-Ville, or Old City, crowned by the remains of a medieval castle and lined with old stone houses and artists’ studios. Explore the ruins and enjoy lunch on your own at a café.

Back in the saddle with renewed energy, pedal from the river up a wooded road into the Dentelles de Montmirail, limestone mountains with dramatic serrated ridges. In Gigondas, a village whose name comes from jocunditas, the Roman word for joy, perhaps experience happiness of your own at your first taste of superb Gigondas wine. Then spin past immaculate vineyards, promenades of cypress trees and through Vacqueyras en route to Beaumes-de-Venise, a picturesque market town known for its sweet white muscat.

Tonight join your leaders for a friendly game of pétanque before we gather for a casual “bistro Provençal,” a family-style dinner at our charming hotel.

Description Flawlessly combining rustic charm and elegant luxury, an “evocative country house hotel crowning an ancient hamlet, backdropped by Mont Ventoux,” according to Hideaway Report. A Relais & Châteaux member. (pool)
Day 3: Mont Ventoux
As you head out this morning, take in unsurpassed views of imposing Mont Ventoux, the “Giant of Provence.” This mountain is perhaps best known for its occasional appearance in the Tour de France, and with its 13-mile, 4,700-foot, average 7.5-percent grade, it strikes fear in the hearts of even the most seasoned cyclists. You, however, can rest easy knowing that you don’t have to take on this daunting challenge if you don’t wish to!

From Crillon le Brave it’s not far to the village of Bédoin, with its terraced cafés nestled under plane trees. A gorgeous 11-mile climb takes you through the Gorges de la Nesque, a deep canyon separating Ventoux and the Vaucluse Plateau. The ascent is gradual—and very worthwhile. Relish stunning views from the impressive winding road, as well as the shade provided by several tunnels through the mountainside. Go at your own pace and remember to drink plenty of water! Your next stop is Sault, where shops, spacious squares and friendly cafés make it an enjoyable place for lunch on your own and a little exploring. Consider visiting the church, which dates back to the Middle Ages and houses Gallo-Roman artifacts in its library museum.

Shuttle back to the hotel for a leisurely afternoon, or if you’re feeling energetic, stay on your bike to log more miles and tackle another heart-pumping climb. This evening we’re treated to a more formal dining experience in the Crillon le Brave dining room.

Day 4: Château Pesquié
Start the day with a warm-up spin to Château Pesquié, a Côtes du Ventoux gem where we’re treated to a tour and wine tasting. Late morning is an especially good time for tasting since the palate is still fresh. From here, pedal through a series of charming French villages to Venasque, where we have lunch. If you’d rather bike than taste wine this morning, ride to Le Beaucet (with a good climb) and meet the group in Venasque for lunch. Thanks to its quaint serpentine streets and tidy homes embellished with flowerfilled window boxes, Venasque is listed among Les Plus Beaux Villages de France (The Most Beautiful Villages of France). It takes some effort to reach this hilltop treasure, but we’re sure you’ll agree that it merits every ounce of energy.

Back on your bike after lunch, you may want to take a short detour to remote 12th-century Abbaye de Sénanque, set amid oak groves and a fragrant sea of lavender. If not, pedal through the Lubéron National Forest directly to Gordes and spend time exploring this picture-perfect village perché. Here old stone buildings cling to the craggy southern face of the high Vaucluse Plateau, and a massive 12th-century castle watches over fields, forests and neighboring hilltop towns. Meander along cobblestone lanes leading to shady squares, historic monuments, chic boutiques and cafés.

Our hotel, La Bastide de Gordes & Spa, is an incredible 12th-century fortress in the center of town whose swimming pool overlooks the valley. If you’re in need of TLC, saunter downstairs in your bathrobe and select from Spa Sisley’s decadent menu of services. (Spa treatments are not included in the trip price; see “During Your Trip” for more details on booking an appointment.) For dinner this evening, you are on your own to enjoy one of the restaurants in town.

Lodging: La Bastide de Gordes & Spa

Day 5: Goult
Pedal through timeless Provençal villages such as Goult, Lumières and Lacoste, which claims the Marquis de Sade, the controversial 18th-century author, as its most infamous resident. Ascend to the ruins of the Marquis’ former castle (now owned by fashion designer Pierre Cardin) for spectacular views of the Vaucluse ridge and, clouds willing, Mont Ventoux. If you’d like to explore Ménerbes, the village immortalized by Peter Mayle’s best-selling A Year in Provence, take the quick uphill side trip to the town center. We gather for a delicious picnic lunch at Domaine de la Citadelle Winery, home to the well-known Musée du Tire-Bouchon (Corkscrew Museum), which has more than 1,200 corkscrews on display, some dating from the 17th century.

Head north after lunch, biking across Pont Julien, a Roman bridge built around 300 B.C., to Roussillon, which rests on one of the world’s biggest ochre deposits. Adored by artists for centuries, this village is renowned for its striking natural surroundings, especially the Chaussée des Géants, a canyon radiant with 16 shades of ochre. From here it’s back to Gordes, or you can add more miles and tackle the hill up to the hamlet of Lioux, notable for its magnificent imposing cliff of gray limestone known by locals as “la falaise de la Madeleine” (“Madeline’s cliff”).

This evening we adjourn to the hotel’s elegant restaurant for a farewell dinner overlooking the Lubéron Valley.

Day 6: Avignon
If you’re not quite ready to bid your bike adieu, take one last spin to Joucas, a tiny preserved 11th-century village overlooking the Lubéron Valley. If you’d rather sleep in, enjoy a relaxed morning by the pool and a leisurely lunch before boarding the shuttle to Avignon.

Thanks for putting together these amazing experiences...maybe Congress needs one of these trips to Provence to see how peaceful life can be, how whether Democrat or Republican, we all want basically the same things in life, to be together with friends and family, to challenge ourselves physically, mentally and socially, to leave the world a better place, to take time to breathe and...most importantly to enjoy the ride!

This was a really outstanding trip. I've been to Provence many times but not by bicycle. Your organization is really great. I am annoyed that in 40 years of bike riding in Berkeley (1960-2000) we did not connect sooner.

The whole experience was amazing! The longer riding options were great exercise, and the routes were scenic and peaceful. The accommodations and food were memorable. The group activities were just right and allowed us to enjoy meeting some really great people, while still having time to ourselves. A huge amount of the credit goes to our tour leaders for making this such a memorable experience.
