- EcoCamp Patagonia
- Description
Similar in design to the well-known permanent tented camps in Africa, the EcoCamp is located in the heart of Torres del Paine National Park within view of the famous Los Torres. The low- impact, comfortable dome tent facility is designed and operated to minimize environmental impact in the heart of Patagonia's Torres del Paine National Park, one of South America's most spectacular and popular hiking regions. In contrast to traditional amenities of lodges constructed in unprotected areas outside the national park boundary (ie, private bath with septic tank, diesel generators, daily linen changes, etc.), EcoCamp guests are encouraged to participate in conservation through the use of less water, minimizing use of limited solar energy for electricity, employing composting toilets, regulating temperature based exclusively on insulation (and low-emission wood burning stoves in suite domes), reducing waste, etc. Accommodations vary from standard domes ( 16' wide and 7' high, on a wooden platform raised off the ground) to deluxe suite dome lofts capable of housing four travelers in a 12 ft’ tall dome complete with low-emission wood burning stove, sitting area, private terrace and en suite bathroom with hot water showers and composting toilets. Public spaces include a cozy shared bathhouse for use by standard dome guests, and an enormous 30' tent and several other connected domes that form a common living area, dining room, lounge with bar and kitchen. In 2012, the EcoCamp Patagonia was nationally recognized as the most sustainable tourism operation in Chile by the Federation of Tourism Businesses. Visitors to EcoCamp Patagonia may enjoy guided hikes of varying lengths among the granite spires, glaciers, waterfalls, lakes and the spectacular landscape of the park, habitat for exotic flora and fauna including the guanaco, rhea, condor, penguin, fox, and flamingo. New for 2012, two different mountain biking trips are also offered 3x each week along undulating trails past lake shores and through lenga forests.
- Day 3: Los Cuernos Trail
- Hiking: 7 hours/10 milesToday's trek parallels sparkling Lago Nordenskjold and offers broad views of the Cuernos of Paine, dramatic carved horns of black slate atop the gray-granite massif. Condors soar from their nests on the steep cliffs above. Arrive at Refugio Los Cuernos in the late afternoon in time to shower and settle in for the evening. Enjoy wine, a hot fresh meal, and camaraderie with other trekkers by the fire before retiring for the night. [BLD]*If refugios are unavailable alternative accommodation will be provided in tents with prior notice. Trekkers will still have full access to bathrooms and facilities of refugios.Accommodations: Refugio Los CuernosMeals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

- Day 5: Grey Lake Lookout Trail

After a picnic lunch, board the boat and cross the sparkling lake to Grey Glacier, where ample time is spent observing the many faces of this active, calving glacier. At the end of the navigation, return to EcoCamp Patagonia (30-45 minutes by van) for dinner and overnight. [BLD]Note: - Occasionally the weather may not permit you to sail across the lake, or during Shoulder Season (October and April) the sailing might be cancelled if the required minimum of 10 passengers isn't reached. - Hiking: 10 hours/14 miles
This challenging, all-day hike ascends steeply up to Valle Ascencio to the base of the impressive granite massif where the iconic Towers of Paine rise from a glacial lake. My favorite thing was hiking in Torres del Paine -- I've spent a good portion of my life visiting the major mountain ranges of the world, and Patagonia just floored me. I'll definitely recommend Wildland to my friends. - John Flinn, CA
