We will soak in early settlement history while cycling on the giant flat sand bar known as the Outer Banks.

Meet: Corolla, NC
Time: 3:00pm
Terrain: Beginner Moderate Flat. Beginner to moderate cycling ability.
Travel Arrangements: Fly into and out of the Norfolk, VA airport. WomanTours will provide a shuttle from the airport at noon to the start of the tour for $40 one-way. Or drive to the tour start and leave your car there for the week.
DAY 1: Corolla
Our tour begins in Corolla, a community with considerable old beach charm. Meet at the Hampton Inn by 3:00 PM for a rental bike fitting, followed by an orientation and dinner. If you arrive early, take time to enjoy a stroll along the beautiful ocean beach or visit the Currituck Lighthouse in the town center. 0 miles
DAY 2: Kill Devil Hills
Our first day’s ride winds through the plains where we will see an abundance of bird life in the creeks and grasses. Take time to stop in Kill Devil Hills to visit the Wright Brothers Museum and Memorial. A few miles further, we stop for lunch at Jockey’s Ridge State Park – a sand dune oasis. Once in Manteo, you may want to visit the Elizabethan Gardens and the Fort Raleigh Historical Sight. It was here that English settlers landed in 1587 and later disappeared without a trace. 34 – 40 miles.
DAY 3: Hatteras
We enter the Outer Banks proper traveling south to Hatteras. Our ride will be bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by Pamlico Sound. Our trail takes us southward through Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge with more than 5,000 acres of marsh.

We’ll continue into the network of lighthouses and life saving stations which served these waters known as “The Graveyard of the Atlantic”. Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the most famous of these having just survived its move away from a deteriorating shoreline. We’ll also visit the Bodie Lighthouse. 36-57 miles.
DAY 4: Ocracoke
We start the day with a short ferry ride and then a short cycling day takes us to the quaint harbor town of Ocracoke. We stay on Silver Lake to see the sun set from our decks at the Captain’s Landing. 24 miles.
DAY 5: Ocracoke
A day to enjoy Ocracoke. Your ears will strain to understand the dialect of native residents. Spend time on the beach or shopping, view the local lighthouse, cycle the side roads of the island, take a kayak tour, or relax with a soothing massage and enjoy the beautiful view from your deck. Dinner is on your own. 0 miles.
DAY 6: Swan Quarter
After a sunrise ferry from Ocracoke to Swan Quarter, we’ll cycle past cotton fields and wetlands to Bath. Then we’ll shuttle to the historic town of Edenton. We will spend the evening at one of the beautifully restored historic B&Bs, enjoying our own private farewell dinner. 45 miles.
DAY 7: Corolla
We complete our trip with a short ride through the rural countryside to Hertford. After a picnic lunch, we’ll say our good-byes and shuttle back to Corolla by 3:00pm. The optional airport shuttle will arrive in Norfolk by 5:00 pm. 31 miles.
