Baja Mexico Sea Kayaking

There’s no better way to experience the beauty of Baja Mexico's Sea of Cortez than sea kayaking and snorkeling through the warm and gentle waters surrounding Espiritu Santo Island. And what better time to create a unique and magical escape than over Halloween?
There’s no better way to experience the beauty of Baja Mexico's Sea of Cortez than sea kayaking and snorkeling through the warm and gentle waters surrounding Espiritu Santo Island. And what better time to create a unique and magical escape than over Halloween?

A remarkably easy sport to learn, sea kayaking can be easily picked up by almost anyone and a kayaking vacation on the Sea of Cortez in Baja, Mexico provides the ideal environment in which to learn the kayaking skills to become a confident paddler. Sea kayaks are easier to paddle and steer than a canoe and are also more stable than canoes – especially for women with their lower centers of gravity.

We enjoy exploring the coves of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula and kayaking the Sea of Cortez, paddling into beautiful bays, bird watching, and snorkeling to a sea lion rookery. We hike the Baja Peninsula’s canyons adorned with hanging wild figs and enjoy bird watching for local seabirds. Knowledgeable local Mexican guides, a comfortable “safari-style” Baja beach camp, and fresh American and authentic Mexican recipes and cuisine make this Sea of Cortez sea kayaking trip a great antidote for your pre-winter, pre-holiday rush.

As a splendid finale, we return to La Paz, Mexico for an additional night to wander through La Paz gift shops, scoping for Mexican art while strolling along the waterfront area of this tranquil Mexican port (no Mexican drug cartels here!). For our farewell dinner, we culminate our Baja and Sea of Cortez women’s vacation with a traditional Mexican cooking class and delicious Mexican recipes you can take back home with you! And round-trip airfare from Los Angeles to La Paz, Mexico is all included!
DAY 1: Travel to La Paz
We meet at the Los Angeles Airport for our morning flight to La Paz, Baja Mexico. It is mandatory that you check in at the airline departure desk in Los Angeles at least 3 hours before your departure time, so please work with Ciretta, our travel consultant, to ensure you have ample connection time in Los Angeles.

Upon our afternoon arrival in La Paz, we transfer to the Hotel Posada Luna Sol (#564 Topete, La Paz 011 52 612 1230559) for a brief orientation and our overnight stay. We select one of the wonderful local restaurants for dinner on our own tonight.

DAYS 2 - 5: Espiritu Santo Island and Sea Kayaking
After an early breakfast, we board our motorized skiffs for transfer to the island of Espiritu Santo (a journey of approximately 1-2 hours). Upon arrival at camp, our first island lunch awaits us. After a camp orientation, we begin the excitement of our sea kayaking adventure! Our sea kayak orientation includes safety and paddling instruction, and a mandatory wet exit or “dunk test” (nothing to be afraid of!). Be ready to have some wet fun as we take the plunge! It’s really quite easy.

For 4 days we kayak, snorkel, swim with sea lions, hike, fish, bird watch, and relax along the shores of this enchanted island of Espiritu Santo. Guided kayak excursions of 2-3 hours are offered each day to outlying islands, through sea arches, along volcanic cliffs and deserted beaches. On October 31 we celebrate Halloween on the beach, complete with piñatas, so be sure to bring a mask or costume!

Our camp is located in a large protected bay, allowing us additional kayaking time for exploring the many sheltered coves and beaches on our own. Other guided activities include skiff excursions to excellent nearby snorkeling spots, including a sea lion rookery where we join these graceful creatures, swimming alongside them while enjoying, first-hand, their playfulness and curiosity. We will hike into the island’s desert canyons and arroyos watching for the Gila woodpecker and listening for the whine of the canyon wren. Fishing for sea bass and red snapper is available for those who want to try their hand at catching dinner! We are welcome to use the fishing gear of our guides if we provide our own lures. And there is always the choice of relaxing in the sand with your toes in the warm water while you enjoy a good book.

In the evenings we tell stories, sing songs, and hear jokes, ghost tales, and folklore told to us by our guides and resident Mexican crew members.

Day 6: Afternoon Transfer to La Paz and Mexican Cooking Class
This morning we sea kayak, snorkel, and/or hike on the island. After lunch we board our skiffs and motor back to La Paz. After checking into the Posada Luna Sol, we have time to take a hot shower (yes!), do a little shopping in the colorful and lovely town of La Paz, then gather together for our final dinner celebration - a Mexican cooking class - complete with tasty margaritas and homemade Mexican food, cooked by us!
