Overview

Book
A challenging trekking holiday around Manaslu in the Nepal Himalaya. Manaslu at 8163 metres is the eighth tallest mountain in the World. Situated close to the border with Tibet, some 100 km northwest of Kathmandu, the valleys to the north and east of Manaslu were a restricted area until the early nineties when The Adventure Travel were one of the first companies granted permission to take groups trekking into the region.

This area has always seen relatively few trekkers when compared to the more popular regions of the Annapurna and the Khumbu and the simple villages, together with the stunning scenery around Manaslu make this one of the classic yet unspoilt trekking adventures in the Himalaya. Travelling via Gorkha and Arughat to the south of Manaslu, we ascend the impressive gorge of the Burhi Gandaki for several days, passing through tiny villages perched on the steep valley sides, to reach the Tibetan world beyond the village of Ghap. We have the feeling of entering a secret Buddhist world of monasteries, mani walls and prayer flags as the valley starts to open out, and there are remarkable panoramas of the peaks on the Nepal-Tibet border, as well as those of the Manaslu group. The scenery becomes even more impressive as we climb up into the alpine environment on the approach to the Larkya La (5135m), with big peaks on all sides. The principal peaks that we will see on this first part of our trek are Himal Chuli, Manaslu, Cheo Himal and Himlung Himal. Beyond the Larkya La, we drop down into the heavily forested valley of the Marsyangdi River, where we are now trekking beneath the giants of the Annapurna range, following the river down to a meeting with the roadhead. Once only accessible to fully self-sufficient camping groups, the Manaslu circuit can now be completed using local lodges and tea houses giving a unique opportunity to interact with the local people who live in these high Himalayan valleys.

    • Linking the Burhi Gandaki and Marsyangdi valleys

A wonderful first trip to Nepal . Hopefully the first of many !I enjoyed Everything ..... except the high altitude headache !!!The trip was so much more than I had expected - in all kinds of ways. We couldn't have asked for a better leader. Ben's good humour and patience were outstanding.

I had a fabulous time, the Manaslu trek was just as I had hoped, quiet - not many other trekking groups, interesting - people in this region are living their normal lives and still mostly untouched by the trekking industry, and scenic - the whole trip was stunning but the mountains on the pass-day were quite amazing. Having our own cook team meant we ate extremely well and stayed healthy.

The trip started in the regal excellence of the Shanker hotel in Kathmandu. Don't forget to buy some Diamox from one of the pharmacies while you're here. It's also useful to buy a face mask before the traffic smog gets to your throat. If you have time get a bus to see Durbar square in Bhaktapur as they're making an excellent job of restoring it (compared to what they're doing in Kathmandu). The tour soon gets you out to Arughat with its' refreshing greenness and fresh air! The downside is that the 'bathroom' facilities take a tumble but we still have a sink, hot water and electric light. Each day's trekking from here is fascinating with ever-changing flora, fauna, people, architecture and climatic zones. After a few days we've gone from being quite hot to having warm days but cold nights. Several of the lodges have wood burning stoves which is most appreciated once the sun has gone down. The down-side is that the showers and hot water also start to disappear! Deciding to be vegetarian is a good option as most of the food is but to be said has reasonable variety and good taste. Unfortunately it can't be relied upon to prevent upset stomachs as 2 or 3 people found out despite their best efforts By the time we were approaching 4000 m four of the sixteen people were suffering from mild altitude sickness and were taking their Diamox. The final village before the pass (Somdu) was reminiscent of what medieval Britain may have been like and was absolutely fascinating. The downside wa

Our guide "Ricky" was exceptional with a vast background trekking and biking in the area and a local native, he was passionate about sharing Nepal and its unique stories of the sort that can't be found in guide books. He was also excellent at looking after the group as we aclimated, adjusting the itinerary to make the most out of each day for us as well as the sherpas and porters. A truly kind, compassionate and capable guide... really fun too! The trek was quite a unique one, having hiked Gokyo/Everest BC, I had a general thought about what the trek was like, but was pleasantly taken aback at how different it was on so many levels. The diversity of terrain and cultures as we progressed as profound and stunningly beautiful. This is also a trek not to procrastinate doing, much like the Annapurna Circuit, a jeep trak is in the makings (slowly and by hand mostly) shortening the route and potentially cutting off some of the very special villages along the way. The durration of this trip was perfect, I wish it could stay like that, but like life, nothing remains the same. I loved my experience... thank you KE and "Ricky"!!!

A long overdue return to Nepal and its lovely lovely people. Having also previous completed Gokyo Lakes/Cho La/Everest BC trek, this was a different experience altogether with a less developed feel and far fewer other trekkers. A bonus to have the variety of walking from low level jungle and steep sided river gorge, through forest, opening up into alpine zone surrounded by stunning peaks and then the challenge of climbing through the snow to cross the Larkya La, followed by returning to the comfort of greenery and forest once again. All along the way passing many little villages, smiling faces and greetings of 'Namaste'. The long drives at the start and end were hard work but entertaining and unavoidable. Our guide Ricky was exceptional, taking care of the whole team and ensuring everyone was happy, especially the most important people - our fabulous porters. He was very knowledgable and experienced, which allowed him to adjust the itinerary so we avoided an extra day waiting to cross the pass, crossed in good weather and had a couple of shorter days afterwards to recover. Our Sirdar Maan and Sherpas Tendi and Shakta worked tirelessly also. The lovely Bijay our water boy was ever smiling! I looked forward to "Ricky Time" each evening when we would hear a funny story or fascinating piece of information that you would not find in any guide book. To top it all I shared the experience with 8 other great people, a nice sized group and great company. Thanks KE and 'Rock On' Ricky!

This was my first trek with KE Adventure Travel and my first visit to Nepal. I was fortunate enough to go with friends who had previously been on an Everest Base Camp trek 7 years previously, I was able to ask no end of questions during the year, months and days leading up to the trip which helped me prepare. Despite the tips and the coaching, I went with an open mind, no amount of ‘You Tube’ watching or documentaries on the Himalaya (and even Everest), would prepare me for the sensory overload that lay ahead of me as I touched down for the first time in Kathmandu and embarked on my ‘trek of a life time’! Kathmandu was an experience in itself but as we commenced our trek through the varied and quite diverse eco systems to our various lodges and Tea Houses, it didn't take me long to fall completely in love with this beautiful country. The scenery was stunning, literally breath taking (it had nothing to do with the altitude!). The people were welcoming and friendly and we were invariably greeted with 'Nameste', (that's If we didn't get to say it first!). Ricky our trek leader knew everything there was about his amazing country and would take time to explain things to us about various aspects of their culture and religion. He would surprise us all after our evening dinner with some quite amazing facts - we all secretly looked forward to 'Ricky Time'. He was an excellent leader, ensuring that us tourists and his team (the strong boys and Tendi, Maan & Sota the Sherpas) were all h
