Overview

Book
Sri Lanka conjures up images of tea plantations, cool highlands, ancient cities and tropical beaches, all of which well see on this diverse bicycle tour. Not to be forgotten are the extraordinary flora and fauna, the religious and cultural beliefs or the tantalizing spices that contribute to making the local cuisine so delicious. With such an astonishing variety of cultural and natural treasures there is truly something for everybody on this tour. The quiet back roads of this tear- drop shaped island make it ideal for cycling. We start along the west coast catching glimpses of the sails of the local fishing boats, before we cycle inland through a multitude of Buddhist and Hindu monuments. Ceylon, as Sri Lanka was once known, has been influenced by ancient dynasties, Indians, Portuguese, Dutch and British, all leaving their imprints and a resulting curious mix of ancient cities, monuments and atmospheric colonial architecture to explore.

We continue to the rock fortress of Sigiriya and the once medieval capital of Polonnaruwa. Here we put the bikes aside for an afternoon and take a wildlife safari in the Wasgomuwa National Park. We take a rest day at the hill town of Kandy so you have time to view the Temple of the Tooth, relax on the lake or walk through the splendid botanical gardens. We then follow rivers flowing down to the south coast and and end on the beaches near the fortress of Galle. We overnight in a wonderful range of accommodation, from spa resorts to colonial bungalows on tea estates to remote rustic lodges to beachside hotels. Be captivated by the romance, colour and spice of Sri Lanka, a truly remarkable destination that you'll never forget!

Highlights

    • Visit a 2nd century Buddhist cave temple.
    • We ride through the historic park of Polonnaruwa.
    • We ride along the eastern fringes of Wasgomuwa National Park.
    • Explore the town center's old shops, antique and gem specialists or the bustling market.

Best and most scenic SP tour we've yet done. Knuckles Range was the toughest cycling I've ever done, but I made it to top as did two others (two of us at age 63). Kasun really had our rest stops planned perfectly on that, and gently urged us to the top. Overall - Best SP tour we've yet done (Burma, Central Vietnam, Southern Laos) in terms of itinerary, varied road conditions, low traffic, and super scenery. Definitely the most scenic of these tours, seldom a dull km. The "safari" was absolutely great, closer than I ever thought I'd get to wild elephants. A good mix of cultural sites, natural sites, and rural towns. The tea estate days were superb, great riding and scenery.

The three 2 night venues were all excellent. Deer Park was also excellent and was a particular favourite. Really enjoyed the challenging cycle days and, as a stronger cyclist, I appreciated the guide giving me instructions. The big day's climbing was definitely a highlight! Sri Lanka itself was a great country to experience by bike. Of the cultural stops, Lion Rock, Dambullah temple, Elephant safari, and the botanic gardens at Kandi were all excellent.

A good mix of tarmac and off road, and the scenery was stunning! Guide was great to ride with me on the downhill sections as he knew I was inexperienced, when we went through busy towns guide made sure we were always together and safe. Any bike issues were promptly responded to. The driver was excellent and kept a good distance from the last rider so they didn't have their ride spoilt by the noise of the idling truck. the size of the group was perfect - we had plenty of room to be hot and sweaty in the bus after a ride. already thinking about which trip to do next...!!

The whole team was great - extremely customer focused and helpful. Our National Guide was clearly a strong leader who ensured the team worked well together He was clearly passionate about his country and this shone through. Nothing was ever a problem and they often anticipated our needs. It was great to arrive at a nice hotel after a hard days biking, especially with a pool! Wonderful food and very generous portions

Just loved this trip. Number one is having local guides who are great at their job! The route in Sri Lanka was great, lots of variety, some challenges and always thought given to choosing light traffic roads.

This trip was brilliant. I loved riding along the coast, cycling the ancient cities, Kandy, the tea plantations, the villages, the markets, the elephant safari...well balanced and just enough time at each place, and plenty of time to stop and be in contact with the local population.
