Overview

Book
Vietnam is a land of stunningly varied landscapes: idyllic beaches in tranquil bays and stunning mountain scenery constantly compete for attention. Having endured years of colonialism, war and communism, Vietnam is opening up more areas to tourism and encouraging the outside world to discover a beautiful country and people. We invite you to discover the relatively unexplored northeast region of Vietnam, near the border with China where, until recently, you needed special permits to visit. Here you'll be riding through dramatic landscapes and colourful ethnic minorities still living as they have for hundreds of years. As you cycle by villagers weaving in their homes and blacksmiths forging their tools it will be as if everyday you are riding through an open air museum.

This journey starts in Hanoi and heads north by train to Lao Cai on the Chinese border. From there we head east into the province of Ha Giang, a region that just eased access for tourists. The limestone mountains provide a stunning backdrop of cliff faces jutting out. Too mountainous for agriculture, much of the land in this region is covered by forests. Where the terrain flattens out, plums, peaches and persimmons are grown, and we'll cycle among the orchards and the rice fields. A rest day in a valley will give you time to walk and explore villages and one afternoon we'll take a break from biking and cruise by boat up a river to our overnight on the banks of tranquil Be Be Lake, Vietnam's largest natural lake. We end our tour on a unique island in Ha Long Bay, so you can take advantage of the sandy beaches. We'll spend two nights in ethnic villages of the Nung and Tay - so you can see for yourself the differences among the customs of the different tribes. Our other overnights will range from an eco lodge, to standard hotel rooms to a beachside resort, providing a nice mix of places to stay. This route is through a marvelous landscape of many breath-taking bends winding up mountains and down to valleys of villages of ethnic minority groups.

In summary, the tour exceeded all expectations, especially the scenery and people along the country roads. We really enjoyed the chance to interact with the locals. The physical challenge of cycling through has been rewarding. Many thanks to our guide, for the logistics and for the delicious meals he prepared along the road, and the driver, who picked us up with the van wherever we stopped at the end of every cycling day.

This trip was brilliant! I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved getting out into the countryside and away from the usual hustle and bustle of Vietnam. The home stays were excellent in terms of quality of accommodation as well as food.

I enjoyed the whole trip. I have booked several organized roundtrips but I have never felt so comfortable as in this one. The member of our tour were very friendly (participants and guides). I was also impressed about the kindness of the local people.
