Overview

Book
Known as 'The Roof of Africa', Ethiopia is a land full of surprises, with a wealth of superb trekking and a rich cultural heritage to explore and on this exceptional walking holiday we'll experience some of the finest mountain scenery in Africa, notably in the Simien Mountains which have been designated a World Heritage Site. This highland area in the northern part of Ethiopia includes many summits over 4000 metres, the highest being Ras Deshen, the fourth highest mountain in Africa. Geographically, the Simien Mountains comprise several major plateaux, which are underlain by basalt lavas thousands of metres thick. It is the erosion of these lavas that has created the dramatic escarpments and freestanding pinnacles which are characteristic of the Simien Mountains range and which are comparable in terms of spectacle to the Grand Canyon. We access this northern region by way of a short internal flight from Addis Ababa to the ancient capital of Gondar. This latter is a wonderful, historically important, city with an unusual collection of 17th century castles and churches. Six days of trekking takes us through a land of natural wonders and of rare wildlife, including the Simien Mountains red fox, the strikingly-maned Gelada baboon and the majestic lammergeier or bearded vulture. Trekking through several villages, notable for their carefully tended farmland and friendly people, our walking reaches its climax at the summit of Ras Deshen (4620m), where the views extend northwards to Eritrea. A 2-day visit to explore Lalibela, with its collection of amazing churches, carved out of solid rock, is a great way to end this exceptional walking adventure holiday to the Simien Mountains of Ethiopia. Providing a variety of completely new experiences, Ethiopia is an adventure travel destination for the trekking connoisseur to explore.

Is this holiday for you?

This trip involves straightforward trekking on good trails which are the paths used by local people as they travel between their villages. We head west to east on the high escarpment of the Simien Mountains. As there are several longer days of up to 8 hours trekking that include a considerable amount of ascent and/or descent (over 1500m) this a challenging trekking holiday. The optional ascent of Ras Deshen provides a challenging climb, particularly because of its reasonably high altitude, and the walking day here will be 10 to 12 hours long. The upper part of the climb includes some scrambling. You will need to ensure you are physically prepared for the trek. You should be comfortable with walking on good trails but with some steep ascents and descents for typically 5 or 6 hours each day (or more) for several days continuously. The optional ascent of Ras Deshen although a longer day, presents no technical difficulty but trekking at altitudes above 3000m does make greater demands on the body than similar terrain at lower elevations, and even fit and active hikers may find this quite challenging.

Highlights

    • Trek to the summit of Ras Dashen (4620m), Ethiopia's highest peak
    • Includes visits to Gondar's castles & the UNESCO rock hewn churches of Lalibela
    • Extraordinary wildlife, up close, including Ethiopia's Gelada Baboons
    • Fantastic value holiday with all meals included

The trekking was fantastic. A little bit quick paced for me on one or two days, however it was my first time at altitude and my first trek. People are amazing considering what the country has been through. Scenery is fantastic, had lots of comments already on photos taken. Overall - trip leader, trek guide, trek cook and trek crew were excellent. I will definitely be using you again and am indeed already looking through the brochure.

The Ethiopian trek leader was fantastic. His knowledge of the Simien National Park was encyclopaedic and he had a wonderful enthusiasm for the flora and fauna, such that we saw and enjoyed all but one of the indigenous animals and birds. His pacing of the climbing and walking was perfect and he controlled his trekking staff firmly and with sensitivity. Together with Adrian the trek leader he made for a perfect trek.

Fabulous trek in awesome Simien Mountains with unrivalled scenery and wildlife. No other groups in the area, very peaceful & amazing views. Great locals living as they have done for generations, untouched by technology or the internet age. Knowledgeable local guides. Gondar & Lalibela a bonus. Ethiopian food was enjoyable on and off trek.

Great leader, excellent company, fabulous sightseeing, challenging trek. I have been on 13 overseas treks now and had many good or excellent leaders. Our leader was at the very top of the tree.

Our leader was an really excellent leader in all respects. Omar, was a masterful fixer and negotiator. He was knowledgeable on Ethiopian history, society, religion etc though he sometimes struggled to express it all with his English. He is learning fast though. Haile, Simien National Park guide, was excellent. Good knowledge of flora and fauna and very observant so we saw as much as possible. Very good English and easily understood. We particularly appreciated the impropmtu entertainment he and the trek crew provided for us on the penultimate trek night.

I most enjoyed the sense of achievment in completing the trek, campfires and dancing, visiting the school, the coffee making cermony, and the company of others on the holiday.

We have been on a trek with our leader before, and it was partly because she was the leader on this trek that we booked it. She is an excellent leader - attending to detail, ensuring that everyone's needs are met. She is very client focussed. She is thorough, pays attention to detail and provides a lot of information, ensuring that everyone knows what is going on , where they need to be when etc. She sensitively assisted the local guide and worked with him very well, so that there skills and experience complimented each other for the benefit of the group, and that she also had the opportunity to pick up a few tips about how he could improve upon the service he offered. That said, the local guide was great, with a wealth of information about his country and always helpful, enthusiastic and approachable.

I had high expectations and they were all met. If anything the standard of hotel accommodation was higher than I had anticipated.

The website is great and very user friendly!! Whenever I contacted the team, it was a friendly and professional response. The trip was fantastic. Our local Ethiopian leader was fantastic in organising the Ethiopian crew. They were so helpful and always smiling. It was never too much to ask for them, always ready to help. The accommodation was superb. The only minor point is that we did not have hot water one day from the hotel in Gondar but this was rectified in the other day we stayed there. It has been very good as the country overall has surprised me with its beauty, friendliness and good organisation overall!!

I had an excellent trip - really enjoyed Ethiopia. The Ethiopians are very friendly especially when you make the effort to earn a few words. The Simien mountains are beautiful. I normally do more Difficult trekking tours with less cultural bits. However I enjoyed the churches and learning about the Ethiopian way of life.

The trip was great. Level of trip was what I expected. Hiking part was awesome, especially Ras Dashen. I'm not much into cultural, but found this part of the trip enjoyable as well. Ethiopia is an amazing country. Glad I went! Our guide Yonis was great! A true ambassador for his country. He looked out for everyone on the trip. Logistics were tricky - he did a great job. Hotels very good for Africa! Accomodations on trek excellent. Coffee and warm water for washing every morning (unexpected bonus). Trek was what I expected. Perhaps a bit more difficult. office staff were GREAT! Communication was easy and email correspondence was quick. I've taken trips with several companies and your staff gets an A+ with how they work with clients. Thanks.
