Overview

Book
Sitting astride a high ridge amongst the snow-capped peaks of Peru, the Inca fortress of Choquequirao is one of the most important discoveries of Inca antiquity; we invite you to discover the secrets of this abandoned city on this classic 2 week trekking holiday. Already a rival to Machu Picchu in terms of its size and splendour, more buildings and llama-decorated terraces are being exposed at Choquequirao each year. More remote and challenging to access than Machu Picchu, it is far less visited and still offers you the chance to wander freely amongst the evocative ruins and explore the terraces in relative solitude. Our fully supported trek to this so-called 'Cradle of Gold' is by way of the awe-inspiring canyon of Apurimac River, involving an exciting descent and ascent of almost 2000 metres to reach our camp beside the citadel of Choquequirao (3000m)! We will have a full day to explore the ruins before setting off on a 5-day trek through the rugged and beautiful Cordillera Vilcabamba, a region dominated by impressive snowy 6000 metre peaks including Pumasillo and Salkantay.

Following a former Inca trail which once connected Choquequirao to Machu Picchu, we then cross the Totora Pass (4500m) then turn north to descend the Rio Colpa, passing untouched Andean villages whose Quechua inhabitants still wear traditional dress. Arriving at the cloud forest cloaked valley of the Rio Urubamba, our trek concludes with a guided tour of Machu Picchu and a welcome free day in Cusco. This is a fantastic holiday in Peru and a must for adventure seekers who want to follow in the footsteps of the early explorers and for those searching for a genuine ‘Inca Trail’ experience, but without the crowds. This could well be the best trek in Peru!

The food was varied and excellent, well prepared and no shortage. Our leader had an excellent knowledge of area, history etc and was always willing to answer any questions. He managed to look after both the very fit walkers as well as those not quite as fit or young! He also showed the group several old Inca ruins that I'm sure other leaders didn't know existed. The scenery was excellent and the trek route was not on overused trails - we rarely encountered other trekkers. The camp sites were also situated in good positions.

I had no expectations since I had never hiked anything like this before, never used the company before and I was going alone. I would definitely pay again for the quality and organization received. It was a very good trip. I has a great experience, met wonderful people, had some physical challenges and enjoyed being outdoor and in the mountains exploring the past (Inca history) with a very well prepared company and guide.

This was a wonderful adventure; I did not want it to end! I particularly enjoyed the opportunity of seeing parts of Peru that were off the beaten track (in terms of tourism) and seeing the great Inca sites. The guides were exceptionally well informed and able to answer all questions regarding history, geography and cultural aspects. The trek experience was superb, from the hot water wash in the morning to the excellent dinners in the evening.

The whole trek was brilliant, as was the weather which added to the enjoyment. The whole team camaraderie from our group right down to the muleteers was very inspiring. Our extension to lake Titicaca, and the train ride was also very special and a lovely way to finish our holiday.

I had an excellent trip with you before and was confident that everything would be organised well. We had very good service. The leaders of the trek were clearly passionate about Peru and keen that we enjoyed all it had to offer. They had a good rapport with the support crew which encouraged a feeling of real team work. I really enjoyed the opportunity to go to places that tourists who visit Machu Picchu don't normally go to. We visited lots of Inca sites and were the only group there - which made it even more special.

We have used your services in the past and been very happy with the service we have received. Both the trek leader and fellow guide were fantastic, extremely knowledgeable and passionate about their country and it's history. We found it to be an extremely enjoyable trip and it was well planned to allow for acclimatisation. Also, recommendations for restaurants etc were good and combined with high standards of food and hygiene on trek allowed us to remain well.

Everything was superbly organised, including the rainforest extension. You need something above 'excellent' to describe the local leader's trek management. His passion for all aspects of the trip made it unforgettable. They were very ably assisted by Gabriel, whose pacing over the high passes was outstanding. Thanks for a great experience !!

Best two leaders ever - fantastic! I LOVED IT. Excellent health and fitness. Just think grading of trek should be one or two notches harder. Everything was first class and 5 star - the leaders, the crew, all the camping equipment and the food. The remoteness of the trek... I did not want to do the Inca Trail with thousands of people. It was excellent not to see other trekkers for days on end. Got a real feel for the individual communities in Peru. Locations of all the campsites were absolutely stunning! This Surpassed expectations as the standards were first class - 5 star all the way. The trek was harder than anticipated, from what I understood of your grading system. Based on previous treks I have done with same grading, this was much harder.

The guide was totally brilliant throughout and engendered a great atmosphere amongst trekkers and crew alike. He was knowledgeable, committed, dedicated and well respected by all the crew. The guides showed a good level of competence when dealing with those affected by the altitude. Particularly impressed by standard of care shown by the guides to their crew and by the muleteers to their animals. Most enjoyed - Trekking through isolated areas and seeing the "real" Peru.

I can't stress enough how absolutely magnificent this holiday was. I credit that in significant part to the local team. I don't underestimate how important the role of every member of the team was; they were all excellent adherents to hygiene, discipline, timing, animal and environmental care etc and the overall experience was absolutely outstanding. I was just bowled over by the quality of the whole thing. This was the trip of a lifetime and it did not disappoint, I just loved it.

The trip met our specific needs of visiting Machu Picchu; but also seeing real Peru through a longer trek off the beaten track - with the bonus of Choquequirao thrown in.

The leader is the best cook- if that's what he can do in a tent up a mountain who knows what he would do in a proper kitchen!! He is awesome. The best holiday we have ever had!
