Starting the walk-in to Mount Everest at Jiri, this fantastic 3-week trek follows the same approach used by the Everest expeditions of the 1950's. For the first week, it's a real roller-coaster holiday, as we trek 'across the grain' of the country over high passes and through the deep valleys of the Solu Khumbu region. During the day, we enjoy trekking through an unspoilt Himalayan landscape. Whilst, each evening, we check in at a simple lodge, usually situated in one of the many peaceful Sherpa villages on our route. Reaching the Dudh Kosi River, we pass beneath the airfield at Lukla and continue northwards to Namche Bazaar, the gateway to one of the most remarkable high mountain landscapes on earth. Fit and acclimatised after our long approach, we can enjoy all of the sights and experiences of the high Khumbu, as our trek continues through the monastery village of Thyangboche and on towards Everest. Above the highest of the Khumbu's tea-houses at Gorak Shep (5288m), we hike along the Khumbu Glacier to Everest Basecamp and we also have the option to climb to the top of Kala Patar, for arguably the best Everest views.

Is this holiday for you?

This trekking holiday in Nepal follows well established trails throughout. Travelling east across the grain of the country means that you will have a fair amount of accumulated ascent and descent on this trip, with several high passes to cross on the way to the Dudh Kosi, including the Lamjura Pass at 3530 metres. On reaching the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, you will be fit and well acclimatised and in great shape to continue the classic route to Everest Basecamp through the High Khumbu. This is a long and tough trek and its relatively high grade reflects the sustained nature of the trekking in the first week and the high altitudes encountered in the final week.

    • Quiet walking trails and excellent acclimatisation
    • Trekking holiday in the footsteps of the early Himalayan expeditions
    • Trek from the foothills of Nepal to the highest peaks
    • Classic Nepalese trekking holiday with full Sherpa crew
    • 5-Star Kathmandu hotels, including the Yak & Yeti and the Shangri-La

Overall Rating

If you have the time, I would strongly recommend the Jiri trek as you get to see parts of Nepal that you would otherwise miss. Being away from the crowds of Lukla made it all the better. Our trek was very well organised and the entire guiding and support crew were simply excellent. Accommodation is basic in places, but that's what you expect and whilst some areas are still rebuilding after the earthquake, we were always met with a warm welcome.
