Overview

Book
On this cycle tour from Vietnam to Cambodia you'll feel like a time traveler as you relive many periods of history from the 4th Century ruins of My Son to the 10th Century Khmer Empire all the way through to present day. As we ride between three UNESCO World Heritage sites you'll also be regaled by unforgettable scenery, ranging from long coastal roads, to coffee plantations covering the highlands, to golden sunsets on the Mekong River. We start cycling in the charming town of Hoi An that was the largest harbour in Southeast Asia in the 1st century. From here we pay a visit to the 4th and the 14th century temples built by by the kings of Champa at My Son and then move forward to the 21st century and bear witness to the site of one of the worst massacres of the American/Vietnam War in My Lai. Climbing up to the highlands we meet the Jarai and Bhanar ethnic minorities who still practice animism and a subsistence lifestyle.

We'll encounter more ethnic tribes once we cross the border to Cambodia, and as this route is well off the beaten track, foreigners on bicycles are still a novelty. Once we reach the rustic town of Banlung a dip in a 700,000 year old crater lake will be a refreshing break before we ride to the mighty Mekong River to catch a glimpse of the Irrawaddy Dolphins. Riding from the pre-Angkor ruins at Kampong Cham we move to the lesser known site of Sambor Prei Ku before we reach one of the highlights of the tour -- riding amongst the thousand years of history at the Angkor temple complex.

Highlights

    • Ride to see My Son, the ancient centre of the Cham civilization
    • Visit My Lai, the site of one of the worst massacres of the American/Vietnam War
    • Ride to Banlung, one of the most far-flung of the Khmer province
    • Visit the remaining indigenous tribal villages of the Kreung people

Top ten things I enjoyed: 1. Biking small back roads. 2. The small tour group (only 5 people). 3. All of the children shouting "hello" to us. 4. Learning about the local cultures. 5. The support from our drivers- always having snacks and drinks. 6. The insights from our guides. 7. Seeing places at the pace of a bicycle. 8. Visiting anchient temples. 9. The food. 10. Great location for the rest day in Banlung.

Great way to be totally in the environment and with the people as opposed to being sealed in a bus with tourists. Great guys (guide and driver). Became friends with both of them.
