Overview

Book
Wrapped in mystery and magic the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is one of the most unique destinations to cycle through. It is the only country where Buddhism permeates just about every aspect of life, traditional dress remains the preferred attire, native Dzongka-style architectural features still grace every building, is carbon neutral and plastic bags and smoking are illegal.  We'll be cycling through stunning natural scenery where snow-capped peaks tower above gorges shrouded in primeval forests and majestic fortress-like dzongs and monasteries perch precariously on cliffs, offering a perfect combination of pristine nature alongside culture and tradition.

We start off our tour with an introduction to Bhutanese Buddhism via a hike to the most sacred place in Bhutan, the Tiger's Nest Monastery. We have to hike up 500 m to reachthe awe-inspiring temple. Next we transfer to the capital Thimphu to visit museums and learn more about the culture and traditions of the Land of the Thunder Dragon. Easing into cycling at high altitude we go for a short ride through tranquil villages, fertile farmlands and lush forests to see two stunning monasteries set on the mountaintop overlooking Thimpu.

Now the true climbing begins and we conquer our first of many passes before descending to Punakha and take the time to enjoy the beauty of the valley as well as  the impressive dzong. A gentle climb takes us to Trongsa, home to Bhutan's largest dzong which is situated high above the Mangde Chu River. Descending down through fir and pine forests to Jakar we spend two nights to explore the many temples and Goembas scattered around the valley. Detouring to Tang Valley we cycle to a former palace of Ugyen Cholling, now a museum and guest house. Riding east we continue  our ascents, with the summits marked by striking white chortens and prayer flags, and descents are now in a more remote section of the country and will have to camp for two nights as no hotels are available. Once we have reached Trashingang we are at the easternmost point of our trip across Bhutan. From here we ride south towards the Assam plain and have some glorious descents as we finish our biking at the border to India. We have to enter India to fly  from Guwahati Airport. A dramatic juxtaposition of ancient tradition and culture woven into everyday life, if Bhutan isn't the last Shangri La, it's as close as it gets.
