Overview

Book
More than just a walking holiday, this two week adventure showcases the best of Andean Ecuador's breathtaking natural surroundings, as well as its cultural highlights, as we explore on foot amongst the country's towering volcanoes. We begin with sightseeing Quito before travelling north to explore the area around the charming town of Otavalo, famous for its colourful craft market. From Otavalo well enjoy a series of day walks and visit the San Clemente indigenous community, where we can gain a unique insight into day to day life in rural Ecuador. Our day-hikes will include trekking around Zuleta village, a circuit of the beautiful blue crater lake of Cuicocha and a climb of the viewpoint peak of Fuya Fuya (4263m). Well enjoy an exclusive hike through the Antisana Ecological Reserve; where we can hope to see some of Ecuadors rarer wildlife, before heading south, where we trek to the top of the active volcano Gagua Pichincha (4794m). Next, we hike to the refuge Illiniza, stunningly located between the twin peaks of Illiniza Norte and Illiniza Sur, and to the Whymper refuge (5000m) on Chimborazo. Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador and, due to the equatorial bulge, its summit has the distinction of being the furthest point from the centre of the Earth! A real treat next, as we take a ride on the world famous 'Devil's Nose' train, which drops 1000 metres from Riobamba on the Andean Plateau. A Free day in the utterly charming spa town of Banos, in the shadow of the active volcano, Tungurahua, gives us a chance to recharge our batteries, before we end our holiday with a visit to the Cotopaxi National Park. This is not just a classic walking holiday, but a superb tour of the highlights of Andean Ecuador; one of the most awe-inspiring natural environments on earth.

Is this holiday for you?

This walking holiday is suitable for regular hill walkers. We will enjoy 7 days of walking during the holiday during which we will make ascents of a number of Ecuador's non-technical volcanoes up to and beyond 4000 metres and we will also hike up to some high mountain refuges. The average walking time on each day's hike is between 5 and 7 hours. These hikes are not particularly strenuous but it should be borne in mind that walking at even moderately high altitudes does make extra demands, and you should aim to have a good level of fitness before embarking on the holiday. We will be walking on a variety of different terrains from local village tracks, along forest roads, through open grassland, and the occasional more rugged slope of scree or loose volcanic material. Between our walks well also enjoy some free time to relax as well as visiting some of the countries most famous towns and sights. In order to see as much as possible of Andean Ecuador, there are several transfers involved in this holiday. However, Ecuador is the smallest of the Andean countries and these transfers are generally both short (1 - 3 hours) and scenic.

I enjoyed the most getting to the top of Cotopaxi, the large variety of flowers to photograph and the exotic fruit juices with the meals!

The trek was an exciting and memorable experience. The local guide could not have been more helpful, and was full of information and useful advice. The hotels, food and travel arrangements were excellent. The driver of the trek mini-bus was really helpful, and we all found him to be a great asset during the trek.

From the moment we bonded as a 'team', through to our farewell meal, the whole experience was a delight. This was aided to no small extent by the wit, humour and knowledge of our guide. He forged a family atmosphere amongst the disparate group of 11 trekkers whereby nobody cared who they trekked beside or sat beside at dinner. The variety of the programme was unexpected, though the variety of the weather was as expected - hot n'sunny through to cooler misty drizzle. So go prepared for the full range of climate. Amongst all the great treks were cultural experiences in the towns we visited plus train rides to remember and zip wires to revisit in nightmares!

Gosh, 'excellent' is becoming boring! I had been a bit concerned beforehand because of the altitude involved (over 5,000m) although I had been this high before without problems. However, the acclimatisation programme was subtle but excellent and I was well within my comfort zone. I loved Ecuador - despite the rather Scottish weather - and was impressed that you'd managed to arrange for Tungurahua to erupt impressively at the end of the trip! As usual the mix of other people on the trip was excellent and we all got on well, adding to the experience.I loved the country and particularly the variety of habitats and wildlife on offer. It was good to have a leader who was knowledgeable on plants and didn't mind stopping to look and answer questions. We also saw two condors! I also enjoyed the chocolate and the rum and raisin ice cream! This was my seventh trip with you and won't be my last. ll rating: 10 out of 10 What was the value for this trip compared to the price? 5 out of 10 Date Reviewer left this Review: Date Reviewer Went on the Trip: Would you recommend this trip? The tour guide was ideal. His presence as our trip leader was exceptional. I learned quite a bit about all facets of Ecuador. He was excellent at keeping our group engaged and during some tougher treks motivated. As our group commented, the best any of the group had ever had. Hope all other groups have the opportunity to have our guide as their trip leader.Ideal holiday for me. Appropriate in terms of trekking effort, lovely fellow travelers, and interesting culture/geography. We saw a volcano erupt while in Banos (from a safe distance), tried local food (guinea pig), had excellent trekking days with great views and enjoyed visiting towns like Otavalo.
