Overview

Book
Some of the highest volcanoes on earth can be found in Ecuador, at the northern end of the Andean Chain. This exciting trekking and climbing holiday will give you the opportunity of climbing three peaks over 5000 metres in Ecuador, including reaching the furthest point on the planet from the centre of the Earth! Starting out to the north of the capital city of Quito, we gain acclimatisation with a circuit of the amazing Cuicocha crater lake, followed by a 4-day trek across the Cotacachi-Cayapas highlands, one of the most diverse and spectacular of Ecuador's bio-preserves and including the ascent of Yanaurco (4535m) and rocky Imbabura volcano (4609 m). We then turn our attention to our Big 3', two of which are climbed from high refuges. First in line is Cayambe (5790 metres), a peak which boasts the world's only glaciers which actually straddle the equator. Next, we tackle Illiniza Norte (5020m) an enjoyable climb to a rocky summit with sensational views of nearby Cotopaxi. Descending from Illiniza Norte, we travel directly to our last peak, the stunning, snow-capped Chimborazo (6310 metres), which is the highest summit in Ecuador. On the summit you will be 2168 metres further from the earth's centre than the top of Everest! This justifiably popular holiday includes a varied programme of trekking and climbing, as well as the chance to visit a number of fascinating towns and villages for an insight into rural life and the culture of Ecuador's Quechua-speaking Indians.

Is this holiday for you?

Our climbing holiday to Ecuador has its emphasis on climbing a number of peaks which are situated in different parts of Ecuador, rather than a continuous trek. Our vehicular transport allows us to reach well into the mountain areas and often the approach days are quite short. By contrast the climbing days can be relatively long and strenuous. The holiday also includes a four-day acclimatisation trek through the high Paramo of the Cotacochi-Cayapas Nature Reserve. This involves continuous trekking above 3,000 metres and up to 4,535 metres, mostly on established trails and paths. All baggage during this trek is carried by pack animals and group members will carry only what they need for the day. Overall this is a fairly ambitious programme and a high level of fitness and previous experience using ice axe and crampons are a pre-requisite to complete all of our objectives.

Highlights

Our guide was a real 5-star guide. His knowledge of the mountains was equalled by his knowledge of his own country and the flora and fauna. He was a mine of information, and irrepressible and resourceful. We nicknamed him 'Tigger', such was his energy and enthusiasm. It was all thanks to his great endeavours, and network of contacts, that we snatched the prize of Cotopaxi, when everything appeared to have been thwarted by the weather. I cannot commend him highly enough.

I don't know where to start. I enjoyed it all. It is by far the best trip of this kind that I have done. The choice of hotels was excellent. The itinerary was varied and interesting and the support on the mountains was brilliant. The food was excellent too as was the transport. It was better than I hoped. It was my first time travelling on my own so I was quite anxious at the beginning of the trip. After only a day I felt very much at home and comfortable with the group and guide. He was an excellent guide and was very much liked and respected by the group. I heard about you from some people I met on another trip. They highly recommended it.

The staff are excellent and knowledgeable. I needed to arrange to book the trip but leave one day early at the end and the office were able to accommodate this and deal with my questions very promptly. Fabulous customer service, as always. Our trip leader is the best guide ever. His knowledge of Ecuador is amazing and he is always smiling. This was my first climbing trip and was very impressed by the professionalism and ability of the mountain guides and felt 100% safe at all times. Paco, the chef was brilliant. He cooked the best trout I have ever eaten on a camp stove...very talented.Enjoying the sunrise above the clouds on Cotopaxi and Chimborazo and reaching the summit of Cotopaxi.

I would recommend this trip to anyone especially someone who wants to go high but not put up with endless trekking and camping in tents. It was a shame about the weather but that is something we cannot control. Too much rain caused too much soft snow on the mountains (avalanche risk) so we just had to make the best of it. Thankfully we did eventually manage to summit Cotopaxi on the second attempt. It was a real highlight. - Thank you.

The mountain guides were excellent. Despite seeming to climb a peak every day, they managed to make your achievement seem special. They were obviously extremely experienced and I learned a lot. Our guide was a fantastic leader who couldn't do enough for the group. He managed very well to balance the different ability levels within the group and to give people a good experience even if they weren't going to make it to the top.
