Overview

Book
East of the Stubai Alps and the Brenner Pass between Austria and Italy, the tranquil Zillertal Alps lying within the province of Tyrol, have a peaceful ambience far removed from some of the more popular Alpine walking areas. Only a handful of trails access these 3000 metre plus peaks from Austria and the Berliner Hohenweg is the only well-known route on the north side of the main ridge. This excellent trek makes a loop to the south of the winter ski resort of Mayrhofen, keeping generally to the north of the highest Zillertal peaks. We trek in 3 days to the stunningly located Berliner Hut beneath the Grosser Moseler (3480m) and from there make the challenging crossing of the the Schnbichler Scarte Pass at 3081 metres.

Beyond the sparkling lake of Schlegeisstausee, we climb to the Olperer and the Friesenberghaus Hut and we complete the circuit with a traverse high above the Zemmgrund Valley and a final descent to the pretty alpine patures at Pitzen Alm. With options of climbing the walkers' peak of the Schonbichler Horn (3134m) for spectacular views of the surrounding glaciers and peaks, this outstanding route offers a great taste of Austrian Alpine trekking.

This tour takes you across a number of sharp rocky ridges running north from the main spine of the Zillertal alps. You cross alpine meadows, numerous boulder fields and streams as you ascend to the passes high above the valleys. The walking at times is tough and a good degree of sure footedness and a head for heights (or steep drops) is definitely required. The climb up to the Schonbichler Horn (3134m) was a particular highlight, you start by ascending up some moraine and then cut back to gain a rocky ridge with sharp drops each side, as you get towards the top you have to scramble up the rock face before reaching the pass and the steep drop down the other side – it’s not too difficult and there is a cable to assist you if needed, but by this point you’ve already climbed about 1000m. The huts were excellent, all of different sizes and style, but all equally comfortable and the food was plentiful and filling. Our guide, Arno, was amazing, he was patient, set a great walking pace and demonstrated gentle humour as he dealt with all the bizarre requests and situations we threw at him. If you like rocky mountains, great alpine views and only have a week to spare then this trip is a gem.
