Overview

Book
This family adventure holiday has a focus on enjoying easy walks with the family in the lovely Mediterranean climate whilst also benefitting from swimming in the warm seas of the Aeolian Islands and Sicily. The biggest island of Lipari is our base for this family holiday. We have a week of island hopping and fun, using hydrofoils and ferries to visit several of the neighboring islands. We enjoy a couple of easy coastal walks on Lipari and make the hike up to the crater rim on Vulcano, an island famous throughout Sicily for its black sand beaches. Here, we can also visit the sea-level hot springs and mud pools and have plenty of time for a swim before returning to Lipari. We then take the hydrofoil to Stromboli, one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, with its white houses splashed with scarlet bougainvillea.

On Stromboli, we take an easy walk to the 'stream of fire' to witness the smoke and lava flows of this ever-active volcano which has 'erupted' every 15 minutes since records began. Our volcanic explorer ends in mainland Sicily, with a stay at the foot of smoldering Mount Etna and as a fitting finale to our Sicilian family holiday, we climb to a magnificent viewpoint on the slopes of this active volcano for a wonderful panorama of the eastern coast of Sicily. With lots to see and do and some free time for the kids to enjoy the beach this holiday is in a word...... fantastico!

This trip was better than our expectations; beautiful islands and amazing to walk the volcanoes. There was a good combination of walks and time to relax/swim and see sites. Most enjoyed: Seeing Stromboli erupt in the dark was absolutely spectacular.

The holiday was very interesting and our guide was friendly and most informative. However the itinerary did not take account of the weather in Sicily in August. Our guide rescheduled one of the walks from day to evening- by day we'd all have got heat stroke had we attempted it. I most enjoyed the trip to Stromboli - definitely best to get the evening boat and view the eruptions from the sea at night. We didn't realise there were so many different types of volcano.

Outstanding. Our leader was absolutely brilliant. You could tell he was a teacher in his other life because he enthused the children on the topic of volcanoes to the point where, on day 2, I was being lectured by my 10 year old on the chemical composition of obsidian. He was gentle and kind wth the kids, and helpful and friendly with the adults. If you could guarantee to me that every tour leader is as good as Luca, we would definitely travel with you again. I most enjoyed the leader, the scenery and the learning opportunity for the kids - probably the best ever Geopgraphy Field trip! I was prepared to be underwelmed by the volcanoes but the variety and interest greatly exceeded expectations.

A great trip, the first time for 10 and 12 year old boys on such an expedition. Set up perfectly on Day 1 with a hike up to the top of Mount Vulcana, brilliant boat trip and walk around Stromboli (saw 3 lava eruptions from the boat) and the hike to the top of Etna was simply amazing. The sea swimming was perfect and plenty of chances to cool down in the beautiful warm waters of the Med. Quite chilly at the top of Etna, fleeces were very much needed. Pack light if at all possible as there are a couple of transfers where you need to carry baggage quite a distance. Overall, a simply fantastic trip.

Our family of 4 (children aged 9 and 11) enjoyed a great week on this activity to the Aeolian Islands of the North Eastern coast of Sicily and climbing Mt Etna. From start to finish it was well organised and led by an excellent local guide (Saro) who made sure everyone enjoyed themselves. We did a number of walks up volcanoes and along spectacular coastlines which were 3-4 hrs in duration and manageable for all. Particular highlights were a sunset boat trip to view lava eruptions from the active volcano on Stromboli, excellent local food and wine and a guided ascent to the top of Mt Etna. There was also plenty of time to relax on the beach and swim in the warm sea. I would highly recommend the trip for adventurous families with kids of a similar age to ours who are okay with hiking.

This is an incredible holiday in a beautiful part of the world with a tremendous range of volcanic scenery and activity, delicious food and wonderful cities. It was made even better by fantastic weather, calm seas and coincided with increased activity of Stromboli. Rosario our guide was very helpful and reassuring despite not having lead a family trip before. Once he had realised that children need to know exactly what they are doing all the time, there was less anxiety in the group. He arranged for our family to climb Stromboli on the free day - quite a slog in hot weather, but well worth it to gaze down into the heart of the volcanic craters at sunset and see glowing lava flung into the air with a colossal boom. We then had to descend in the dark and finally got back to the hotel after boat and taxi rides at quarter past midnight (hence not included in the itinerary). Rosario also lead extra walks for anyone that was interested on Lipari, Panarea, Taormina and Catania and arranged for us all to see Stromboli erupt at night from the sea on a private boat, rather than take the earlier hydrofoil. He also knew exactly where to find the best ice creams! May is definitely a great time to visit - sunny, but not too hot nor crowded, the sea is warm enough to swim and snorkel in, and there are lots of wild flowers and butterflies. We couldn't understand why it was recommended to take gloves and a woolly hat...until we visited Etna. It was 3 degrees and hailing at one point with a co
