Overview

Book
Arriving into the Bolivian city of La Paz, the highest capital city in the world, it is impossible to ignore the imposing white peak of Illimani (6438m) absolutely dominating the skyline. Marking both the highest point and southern extremity of the 120 kilometre-long Cordillera Real, this challenging peak will provide a fitting finale to our thrilling, 3 week, Bolivia Climber expedition. We begin with sightseeing and acclimatisation time in La Paz and beside the world famous Lake Titicaca, with visits to Inca and pre-Inca ruins and to the Isla del Sol, before beginning our 4 day trek to our first objective, the pleasing shaped Pequeno Alpamayo (5370m). This peak provides a techincally interesting snow climb via its long west-south-west ridge. Then, transferring to the basecamp for Huayna Potosi (6094m), we make a 2-day ascent of this popular mountain before returning to La Paz for a welcome day's rest, before setting out to tackle the crowning glory of Bolivian climbing, Illimani. Only suitable for those with some previous mountaineering experience, this is a superb climbing holiday to the Andes, a mountain range that is famous for reliable weather and perfect snow conditions.

Highlights

    • Climb Pequeno Alpamayo (5370m), Huayna Potosi (6088) & Illimani (6438m)

Superb, mainly due to the guide. The hotel Rosario in La Paz is one of the finest hotels to start a trek/climb and a comfortable base to return to. I think that Juan really takes care to organise the best possible for clients. Of all local agents (and I have seen many over the years), outperforms them all.

The support staff were superb and kindly (when shattered from a climb, one could just sit pathetically and hope that someone else would put the tent up - exhaustion removes pride most effectively). I might have needed extra days to recover, but the others didn't and I can see why the pace of the itinerary was chosen. Trips leader and crew were superb. All were likeable, able, kind, considerate and knowledgeable. Juan had a very difficult decision to make in whether to continue in the potentially deteriorating conditions - but got it right and we summitted safely. Juan is a very very good trip leader. I loved the walk across Isola Del Sol and lounging on the boat to and from the island. Chilling out at the amazing hotel in Copacabana. The fantastic restaurant in La Paz (perfect for the committed carnivore). The climb up Pequeno Alpamayo is a stunner. The drive to Illimani. Some of the campsites (when the sun was shining). The after-climb celebrations in La Paz. A really good compact group. Food on trek deserves better than an excellent - Pacho (Francisco) did an amazing job of producing healthy, tasty and inventive food - plus I didn't get ill a single time (there is no higher food safety accolade than pandering to my feeble constitution). Keep up the obsession with hygiene. Could have done with more cooked food at breakfast times to fill up on - the bread was often stale (nobody's fault) and there was no real milk for cereal (again, nobody's fault - real stuff wouldn't keep,

PEQUEÑO ALPAMAYO AND BEYOND Trekking and climbing in Bolivia´s high Cordillera Real Copacabana on Lake Titicaca By the shore of Lake Titicaca, we questioned KE´s terminology of the trekking and climbing ordeal we were about to put ourselves through as a ´holiday`; Gordon, a Scot from Fife, suggested that adventure-sadism might be a more accurate description. Pedro, an economist from Madrid had trekked Peru and the Pyrenees; Gavin and Ellen had hiked in the Alps and India; George from the Lake District had summited Mt Tukbul in Morocco; Andrew from Winchester had trekked in Bhutan and Madagascar; and Stuart had already climbed several Bolivian peaks. Most of us had trekked or climbed in the Himalayas. Yet here we were again, ready for more, able somehow to deselect from the memory bank those painful hours of physical and mental exertion and only recall the few moments of glory on the top. But those first few days did feel like a holiday, since from La Paz we went straight to Lake Titicaca for some acclimatisation hikes, it being at an oxygen-sapping 3,800m. We took the boat to the enchanting Isla del Sol, where we stayed in delightful round-houses, hiked across the island to visit the Palacio del Inca (a labyrinth), an Inca sacrificial site (the Mesa Ceremónica – Ceremonial Table), and the Titi Khar’ka (the rock of the Puma – you needed a good imagination to pick out).
