Overview

Book
A classic Southern African overland journey which starts in Rainbow Nation of South Africa and finishes at the ‘Smoke that thunders', Victoria Falls. Arriving into the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town, the familiar skyline of Table Mountain frames this beautiful city. Travelling in a custom built overland vehicle, we drive to Cape Town's Hout Bay, famed for it's beauty and crayfish industry. Heading northwards, up the Atlantic Coast, we enter the raw and rugged terrain of the Cederberg Mountains before arriving at the dramatic land of contrasts, Namibia. From the sharp-ridged dunes of the Namib Desert to the spectacular wildlife, including the black rhino and elephants of Etosha National Park and from the seaside town of Swakopmund to the charms of Windhoek, Namibia provides one of the grandest and diverse of African experiences.

Whilst Namibia may sound like a hard act to follow, Botswana can satisfy even the most experienced safari enthusiast. Exploring the waterways of the Okavango Delta by a traditional mokoro canoe, allows us to get up close to the hippos and birdlife of this iconic waterland. A true land of wilderness, Botswana's Chobe National Park provides the last stage for our final safari experience. Rich grasslands sustain a high concentration of wildlife as we seek out the hunter and hunted on land and by boat. Finishing in Zimbabwe at the thunderous Victoria Falls we complete this astounding African adventure.

Highlights

    • Witness Africa’s finest wildlife in Etosha, the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park
    • See the sunrise at the dunes of Sossusvlei and hike to the top of Dune 45 in Namibia
    • Explore Cape Town, walk in the Cederberg and enjoy optional canoeing on the Orange River
    • Travel by mokoro canoe, meet the Kalahari Bushmen in Botswana and experience Victoria Falls

Our (my wife and I) spent almost 4 weeks in Southern Africa, which was all well organised through KE Adventures. The middle three weeks were with Sunways Safari tours on a small group, accommodated trip. KE Adventures do well to be the UK representative for this Johannesburg based travel company; they are also very well organised and gave us a great trip. We started in Cape Town at Sweetest accommodation (we were in Sweetest Orange) which was a good choice. Well situation, very homely and lots of local advice. We did all the tourist bits of Cape Town (Botanical gardens, Groot Constantia wines, Cape of Good Hope, Seal colony, District 6 museum, etc) and had a very good 2 days before the tour started. The tour had two excellent guides cum driver and cook. It was a small tour (which suited us) and was accommodated so we stayed in hotels, lodges and fixed tents (not quite glamping, but not roughing it either!). The tour up through Namibia, Botswana and into Zimbabwe has many highlights (dune 45, Etosha NP, Chobe NP and, possibly best of all, the Okavango delta). Be prepared for quite rough roads and lots of dust. Most places have laundry if you want, but more relaxing to just accept it and know that you will be clean again when you get to Vic Falls! At Vic Falls you can go over the bridge to the Zambia side (around a 3 Km walk) but must pass through immigration; make sure you get a dual visa at the border on the way in - for UK residents the price is the same at the moment. We were very fortunate to have two excellent guides: Adolf Venter from South Africa and Arthur Mundiwa from Zimbabwe. They worked very hard to make sure we had a wonderful time and their culinary skills were excellent! They fixed two vehicle problems very quickly and, as a result, our tour had only a minimal disruption. Above all, they remained good-humoured throughout. The vehicle is well-designed with good visibility for all passengers and is well-equipped with camping and catering items. However, be prepared for some long hours in the vehicle! Before our departure, I requested KE to provide a list of the lodges we would be using but was informed that this was not possible. However, Sunways did have a list of the lodges and made this available to others on the tour who booked through an agent in Australia. The Australian agent even updated the list when two lodges were changed! This information would have been useful to find out what facilities might be available (e.g. internet access, laundry facilities).
