Overview

Book
Flying in to the Ladakhi capital of Leh, the shapely peak of Stok Kangri (6153m) is prominent on the southern skyline. This new holiday offers the opportunity to make an ascent of this technically straightforward peak as a climax to a superb 2 weeks of exploration and trekking in Ladakh. During the holiday, we visit the colourful monasteries of this Buddhist region and drive to the Kardung La (5380m) for sensational views of the Karakoram range of mountains. To reach our climbing objective we trek on a little-used high-level trail, crossing several passes to reach Stok Kangri Basecamp. The ascent of Stok Kangri is objectively very safe and is technically straightforward, involving easy-angled scree and snow slopes with a short section of ridge climbing, to a perfect summit dome, bedecked with prayer flags and with wide ranging views. This is a superb climbing holiday, perfectly suited to someone seeking their first Himalayan summit or for those who want a 6000 metre climbing holiday in the summer!

    • Stok Kangri, an excellent introduction to Himalayan climbing
    • Superb acclimatisation trek across the Shang La
    • Explore Leh, the Indus Valley and its Buddhist monasteries
    • A great summer mountaineering holiday

We booked our trip at the start of 2017 and found KE to be helpful at all stages answering our never ending list of questions about the trip. Upon arrival we were duly collected and delivered to our hotel in Dehli which was clean, tidy and had a lovely pool which we were able to doze by during the day, our evening meal was superb and next morning we were back the airport to head to Leh. It was a short but magnificent flight. Arrival in Leh was well organised and we met our guide for the duration of the trip 'Pemba'. Pemba was the perfect gent and nothing was ever any trouble. He was hugely knowledgeable and we had great chats with him over the course of almost 2 weeks. Our stay in Leh was smooth, with a great hotel, good food, hot water, and nice beers. During the days before the trek we were shown around local monasteries, taken for short walks to aid our acclimatization and shown nice places to eat/drink/relax. Our trek was thoroughly enjoyable with each day discussed the night before in our nightly briefings giving us a good picture of what to expect the following day. The days were long and at times hard work due to the altitude however perfectly manageable if you have a reasonable level of fitness. We were well catered for with a fantastic lunch provided each day which was carried by our team of sherpa's. Each day started with a nutritious and tasty breakfast and ended with a yummy meal designed to tempt most palates. This is no easy task, especially if altitude has zapp

Stok Kangri is a non-technical mountain at 6100 m in West Kashmir - Ladakh region. The place is stunning and just BIG in a way it's hard to be ready for until you're there. You won't need special skills, but you really want to be a bit fit. Most of the trek is fairly relaxed, but the final climb is unrelenting and you need something in reserve. There is a fair bit of chill time and it's worth taking it to make sure your body has it's chance to adapt. The flights were well organised and we were met at every stage by a KE or RIMO rep who made sure we got to where we needed to be. Hotels were fair and clean. Food was plentiful and mostly local and largely veggie. The transfers were very slick and functional. The two guides at Leh were great, they looked after us, took us about and were full of knowledge. They are both called Rigzen as well! The acclimatisation plan is really good and all 6 people got to the 5000 m base camp with no problem. Only one person didn't make the final climb to 6000 m. On the day itself, the guide turned us round 150 m from the summit. It was obviously a difficult decision, but the conditions on the ground and in the air made it a good one. We could have pressed on, but why push it for the last 150 m when we would have got no view from the top? It was a good decision and we broke 6000 m for our log books. The camp crew were excellent. Cooks, sherpas, camp staff, and horsemen. The horses looked in good shape and seemed well looked after - when one fell i
