Overview

Book
An exciting adventure holiday in the Swiss Alps climbing 4000 metre high mountains. Surrounded by accessible 4000 metre peaks, the pretty mountain village of Saas Fee in Switzerland makes an ideal base for this Alpine climbing week with a programme of varied alpine trekking, easy climbing and general introduction to glacier travel. During 6 days, we will aim to climb four 4000 metre peaks in the Swiss Alps on a variable climbing programme. There are lots of superb 4000 metre peaks above the Saas Valley and with our high guide to client ratio, we are in a position to be flexible about the way the trip works, splitting the group if necessary to fit in with the abilities and aspirations of group members and the prevailing conditions. In the example itinerary given in the trip notes, our first 2 objectives are the Strahlhorn (4190m) and the Allalinhorn (4027m), both climbed from the Britannia Hut and offerring tremendous views of the nearby Matterhorn and Monte Rosa and extending over 100 kilometres to the Mont Blanc Massif.

From the Almageller Hut a traverse of the Weissmies (4023m) offers a superb day, ascending its south-south-east ridge and descending through spectacular glaciated terrain to the Weissmies Hut. The classic Lagginhorn (4010m), via the rock and snow of its west-south west ridge, provides a fitting climax to this truly memorable week of climbing. Whatever the individual programme, this holiday climbing in the Swiss Alps is guaranteed to be a real mountain adventure.

These was my first 'proper' Alpine summits and culminated for me with the spectacular stretch of ridge approaching the summit of the Weissmies. Traversing a snow ridge which is less than a foot wide in places with 1000m drops on both sides is something I've seen in mountaineering books but never imagined I'd be capable of doing. Being lead by guides who I had complete confidence in meant that I learnt a lot, and gave me much more confidence in my own abilities at this level.

As always, the information provided by your company was extremely detailed and useful. The mountain huts were generally very good - in some cases much better than I'd expected. Catering for my vegetarian diet in the huts was impressive. Our guide was an excellent trip leader - attentive and good-humoured. She was also a superb guide on the mountains - setting an appropriate pace and ensuring everybody was both safe and in good spirits. They were also exceptionally good - we were very lucky to have such an experienced and professional team. The success of the holiday was in no small sense due to them. I enjoyed every aspect of the trip. I probably got most satisfaction from climbing the Weissmeis and the Lagginhorn - as these were the most challenging climbs. Having said this, the two earlier climbs were good preparation and ensured that I was fully acclimatised. Even the 'transition' day walking to the Almagellar hut was great fun - especially 'playing' on the big boulder. Having travelled to the Swiss Alps with you before I had a reasonable sense of what was in store - and the trip lived up to my high expectations.

Weismies was incredible. Ad hoc climbing with the guides was a lot of fun. The variety of the trip was superb. The summits were unforgettable. Great experience with you last year, everyone recommends you too.

Our guide's organisation was spot on. No problems of any sort encountered. Top class mountain guiding and tuition along with the others. I was pushing my boundaries as had done trekking but not climbing before. Others on trip more experienced than me but really found things exhilarating - highlight was the top of the Weissmies. Great itinerary with accessible mountains worth the effort.

I had a great time. We did the maximum we could do in the initial weather conditions. Luckily the weather improved enough for the second half of the week. The guides were very experienced and professional.

I thought our week together was absolutely outstanding, and I would like to thank the guide for her endless patience. She was a wonderful guide, always considerate, charming and amusing, but firm and authoritative when she needed to be. It must have been a tough trip for the other guide, as the company representative, so I hope we gave you a break from time to time. Thanks for all the support and advice too, especially in the first few days when you were acting as her right hand man. Remember, you're more than just a beard, you have some wonderful qualities.

Even though I booked at late notice, everything was sorted well before leaving on the trip. The hotel was very comfortable and the food was excellent. The host was a very welcoming host and knew who we were before we even reached the hotel. The pace of the course was just right and ensured that everyone made the summits. The routes offered a variety of different terrains and techniques, which made for a memorable holiday. The guide was a very patient and encouraging leader. Her calm approach and pace setting meant that we were able to reach all our goals. We always felt safe, even when faced with more challenging situations and trusted her judgement throughout. The holiday exceeded expectations and packed in so many new experiences. It was a great introduction to what the alps and alpinism has to offer. Looking back, it was without doubt the best holiday we have had in terms of adventure and exciting situations.
