Overview

Book
Rafting in Utah on the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon has it all: breathtaking scenery, multiple days of relaxing flat water, and one action-packed day of Class III-IV whitewater rafting. Add to that rollicking Utah hiking expeditions by foot in Utahs dramatic canyon country among multi-million-year-old rock formations and you have a whitewater rafting adventure suitable for the whole gang. Explore Canyonlands National Park created in the wake of the John Wesley Powell expedition of 1869 and get a taste of the wild waters of the Colorado River from the deck of an oar raft, dory, inflatable kayak, or stand up paddleboard (paddle rafts are generally only available on our 4-day trips).

Feeling Fearless? Crank your adventure up a notch with a trip down Cataract Canyon in late spring. Snowmelt from the Rockies yields big runoff, massive Class IV-V rapids and some of the countrys most exciting whitewater.

Much of Americas desert southwest is defined by one river: the Colorado. Born of snow pack high in the Rocky Mountains, the Colorado River surges its way south and west into the state of Utah, its rock-shaping power among the defining characteristics of spectacular Canyonlands National Park. The river is mostly undammed above Cataract Canyon; thus, varying water levels at different times of the year provide a whitewater experience for everyone. Seasons experiencing average and/or above average snow packs will likely see highwater in May and June. The high-water season generally occurs sometime in May or June and experienced whitewater enthusiasts delight in the huge waves and the famous Big Drops, which at times can make even the Grand Canyons Lava and Crystal Rapids seem tame. Outside of high-water, it is a great family-friendly run, with less intimidating rapids suitable for all ages and levels of experience.

Highlights

    • Towering red rock walls, seasonal waterfalls & otherworldly scenery
    • Sensational side hikes & stand up paddleboarding on the Colorado
    • Raft the legendary Class III - IV rapids of Cataract Canyon
    • Prehistoric ruins, rock art panels, and cowboy camps
    • Scenic return flight over Canyonlands to Moab

The guides and the food are great. The first 3 days were easy floats enjoying the canyon, playing in the duckies and on the paddleboard, and hiking. The final 3 days were rapids and more hikes. It was a very relaxing and fun trip. If there's a dory on the trip, try it for at least one day of the rapids. It's probably easy to do the same trip in the 4 day version, but if you have the time, opt for the 6-day. I found taking the bus from SLC to Moab very easy, inexpensive and stressfree although it did require a night in SLC to make the 8:30 a.m. pick up time.

Fabulous time on the river lead by very talented and knowledgeable guides with some of the most interesting people I have ever traveled with. Started with a slower, very relaxing pace getting the opportunity to decompress from city life. Each day offered more sites to see and things to learn, and finally, a few days of rapids (my favorite part of rafting). Loved the flight out, too. Every part of OARS did a great job. Look forward to my next trip with OARS!

Our guides, Lars, Ben, Josh and Levi were totally professional but also totally fun! The bonding that occurred on this 'solos' trip with diverse age groups and life experiences was unexpected but truly inspiring and uplifting. I will definitely sign up for more OARS adventures in the future.

I can't put in enough positive words for the Cataract Canyon trip that we took with OARS the first week of July 2015. What a great experience! The guides were top notch, they made the trip very enjoyable. Thanks to Emily, Colin and Ben for all the fun and laughs they provided during the journey. They are a true asset to this organization. Every little thing that they did enhanced the trip. If I could, I would do trip like this every year! What a spectacular week! The only thing I did not see was the stars at night-we had thunderstorms each night, but were rewarded with cooler temps, waterfalls and even the view of a flashflood up close! I can't say enough about the experience and the trip-everyone that loves and respects the true outdoors should do this trip at least once. Most of all, thank you for all the memories that my son and I will have for a long time. Keep up the great work!

My husband and I, ages 66 and 64, just did the 4 day Cataract Canyon trip and feel like we had one of the best trips of our married life. All of our guides, Pete, Christian, Natali, Ryan, Eric, and Emily were exceptional. They were always concerned about the well being of the entire group. I was impressed with their attention to safety and cleanliness in camp- a lot of hand washing which is GOOD in a camping situation. I have a little trouble hiking which Eric immediately noticed so he took my husband and I on an easier trail where we could view the same Indian ruins- very considerate. The guides were all very knowledgeable about the canyon, VERY hard working and very well organized and worked well together as a team. The food was excellent, some of the meals were better than anything I have ever gotten in a fancy restaurant. How people can cook like that outside I will never know and I consider myself a pretty good camp cook. And of course the scenery and rapids were spectacular. We enjoyed it so much that we are already looking for future trips. Only down side- mosquitoes the first night but what can you do- it's mother nature. Just bring plenty of bug spray. When we got to faster water- no more bugs. However, some of my friends I definitely would not reccommend this kind of a trip to simply because they are the type that don't enjoy the outdoors that much. But if you do and you like a little adrenaline rush than this is a trip you should do.

Where to begin...from the pre-trip meeting to the flight home, I couldn't have asked for a better experience. Everyone we came in contact with in the O.A.R.S. family were beautiful souls with a shared love and passion for Mother Nature and what they do, especially our wonderful guides. Lars, Joy, Emily, Ben, Frenchie, Peter-man, Jeremy and Collin are excellent boatsmen/women, truly wonderful individuals, and made the trip one to remember for a lifetime...not to mention they know their way around a kitchen! The beauty of the surroundings and the knowledge they possessed about the land and history were superb, especially Stars with Lars! I hated it had to end, but may our paths cross again!
