Overview

Book
Immersed in the blue of the Adriatic Sea, there is something magical about Istria, the largest (3600 square kilometres) and most northerly of the Croatian peninsulas. The coastal strip, known locally as Blue Istria, is popular with sun-seekers during the summer months, while the interior, or Green Istria, is another story entirely. Here, we will find a world of shading forest, historic hilltop towns, vineyards, olive groves and picturesque rivers. Its the perfect place for a leisurely cycling holiday.

We start our exploration at Buje, close to Croatias northern border with Slovenia, then head south slowly, picking out all of the highlights of this delightful corner of Europe. From the lighthouse at Savudrija to medieval settlements such as Groznjan, we will ride on country roads and on the delightful dismantled railway track of the Parenzana through the rolling hills of the 'Croatian Tuscany'. We will visit wine cellars to sample some of the local favourites, such as Malvasia and Teran. We will also take every opportunity to chill out in pavement cafes overlooking the rolling Istrian countryside and to enjoy local Istrian culinary specialities. Spending time in the coastal towns of Porec and Rovinj and Pula, we will be able to appreciate their beauty, whilst learning a little of their rich histories. If you are looking for a leisurely cycling holiday, with a stunning mix of landscape, culture, delicious food and excellent wines, this is one to consider.

This cycling holiday delivered everything it promised, and more - easy cycling, beautiful countryside and seriously good food and wine. Our route took us along the coast into the (gently rolling) interior and along the Paranzana, an old railway line now converted into a cycle trail. We stopped for wine and olive oil tastings along the way, and had plenty of time to look around the beautiful hill towns and coastal villages. The bikes were of high quality, the support vehicle always on hand to provide assistance - and a picnic lunch everyday - and our guide was very friendly and well informed. I absolutely loved this holiday and would recommend it to anyone!

This was a five star cycling trip around the picturesque medieval seaside towns of northern Croatia. Meandering through vineyards, cruising the promenades and exploring the many historical buildings of the area, all at the gentle pace of a bicycle. We had some days on quiet country roads, some days on mountain bikes following the old train route of the Parenzana and plenty of time to sightsee or rest in the afternoons. The area, having an Italian ancestry, never failed to provide the most amazing foods and wines. We took a tour of a vineyard and an olive oil press on route and passed through a renowned truffle region. The routes were very flexible and catered to the fitness of the group with the options for some of the group to push on and some to put their feet up if they wished. A gastronomic treat, with a bit of exercise.

Again, Croatia was beautiful and seeing by bicycling was a great way to see the Istrian Peninsula. Our guide, Ilya was fantastic, very knowledgeable, nice and accommodating. Dennis in the support van was terrific as well. Overall, the accommodations were good with small issues (shower didn't drain in the first place near Buje and the bed was hard, but the place and setting was very nice.) Motovon was wonderful and the hotel was fantastic. I really didn't care for the hotel in Rovinj, it was not very nice (bad shower) and was too out of the way, too far from the center of Rovinj. Not a big deal as we just made the 10 minute walk to town. Loved Proec and would love to go back. Wine tasting was wonderful as was olive oil tasting (too bad no one ships to US). Overall, the trip was wonderful and we were very happy with the experience. We would definitely do another cycling trip as we really enjoyed that and would definitely go back to Croatia. Thank you!
