Overview

Book
Trek through Swedish Lapland and climb its highest peak on one of Europe's most wild and remote hikes, the 'King's Trail' or 'Kungsleden', on this superb walking holiday. The King's Trail is situated 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle deep in Swedish Lapland. In summer, the approach to Kebnekaise (2117m) Sweden's highest mountain, crosses an unspoiled land of flower-carpeted birch forest and spectacular glacial valleys where the indigenous Sami people tend their herds of reindeer. Starting out alongside the Abisko River, we trek to the wonderful viewpoint of the T'tja Pass (1100m) and continue via the impressive waterfalls of the Tj'ktajakka Valley. Carrying light backpacks, we overnight at a series of comfortable mountain huts, some of which have saunas to help soothe the limbs after a day's walking. Upon reaching the Kebnekaise Mountain Station, we have time for a glacier trek and for the ascent to the exposed and snowy summit of Sweden's highest peak. Superb trekking and the unforgettable experience of daylight at midnight makes this a unique adventure holiday.

If you are looking to complete a linear long distance trek away from the masses and with lovely vistas, Kungsleden is the trip to choose. The path is straightforward with moderate inclines and is well away from habitation. The huts are great with a sauna awaiting you at the end- throw your inhibitions away and follow the Swedes (or take a swimming costume). We had amazing weather which made the trip easier but be prepared for rain. We loved the stops at the Meditation Stones, adding anither dimension to the trip. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the area. The highlight was the ascent of Kebnekaise on a perfect day. Go with an open mind as the next day it was covered in cloud. The guide will start at a fast pace to 'sort out' anyone who might struggle later on and the fixed rope section was fine. Food at the mountain station was amazing. We added a few days in Stockholm at the end which we also thoroughly enjoyed. This trek is recommended in the National Geographic top world treks.

Wow! What a great trip in a landscape above the Arctic Circle. If you enjoy rugged scenery, the ability to walk point to point and stay in isolated mountain huts then you'll enjoy this trip However, if you require everyday to be guaranteed sunshine and very warm then this is perhaps not the trip for you.

The trip is a 7 day hike through a part of the kunglsaden trail, that spans stunning vistas and fairly easy terrain. However it should be noted that there are river crossings, which wasnt stated anywhere to prepare the appropriate gear for. We were lucky the water levels were uncommonly low and manageable for the equipment we had packed. KE's equipment list doesn't seem to be specific for this walk as it contains irrelevant items e.g. head torch, when its 24hr day light and therefore the list could be reassesed. A definite bonus to the trip was the great local Swedish guide. Who made others and myself feel safe, happy and kept you that way through the whole tour. Having to deal with a couple of particularly hard people he was still able to create an inclusive and enjoyable space for the rest of the grouo. He was also very knowledgeable on Swedish history and customs, my favourite being sauna culture, which you will grow to look forward to and love after a long day of walking. All the huts along the journey included a sauna with the exception of one hut. All huts had comfortable dorm style sleeping arangements and cooking facilities. Meals were prepared by us with ingredients carried and purchased on the trail while on the trail. However at the first place and Abisko station meals were eaten at the restaurant, which were delicious!(No one on our trip was vegetarian, but we had gluten free and lactose intolerant which were catered for). I ended up bringing too many snacks from
