My wife, teenage daughter and I just returned from a great week in Egypt, visiting the pharoanic sights, plus Cairo. For the first time in traveling to over 50 countries, we traveled with a tour group , and we weren't sure how we’d feel about it. We actually ended up liking the tour operator quite a lot: they have an experience-the-local-culture philosophy which we liked: for instance, we took the Cairo metro to the pyramids (a great idea to get a feel for everyday Cairo – and the metro is terrific). You also don’t stay in fancy hotels, but the hotels we stayed in were perfectly reasonable, well-located, clean and all rooms had private baths. The group is small (max of 12 people) and it was very simpatico – I guess this particular traveling philosophy makes people self-select. The advantages of group travel are that you don’t have to spend a lot of time planning such a short trip (which was the main reason we did a group), and the tour leader manages all the logistics and language issues, not to mention running interference with the omnipresent touts.
