Overview

Book
Espiritu Santo Island is the quintessential paddling paradise! We combine this with some of Bajas extraordinary marine wildlife for the journey of a lifetime. Paddle, hike, fish, snorkel among sea lions & tropical fish and possibly snorkel with whale sharks (on October, November, March and possibly early April trips, dependent on weather and presence) and release sea turtle hatchlings into the Pacific (on late October & November trips only) or witness humpback whales breaching and manta rays flying from the surface of the sea! (Possible whale sightings humpback, blue and fin on March and April trips.)

This extraordinary, desert island national park has over 20 white sand beaches, volcanic cliffs with towering cactus all surrounded by the wildlife rich waters of the Sea of Cortez. Kayaking and camping along the shores of this island paradise allow us the opportunity to explore ancient archeological sites, canyons adorned with hanging fig trees, freshwater wells, classic desert arroyos, prime fishing holes as well as snorkel among friendly sea lions and tropical fish. Weather permitting well attempt to paddle its unique east coast of sheer rock walls, caves and towering spires.

This is the perfect escape for the novice to advanced sea kayaker seeking some scenic paddling combined with snorkeling, hiking and fishing. Our skiff-supported trips allow our professional guides some flexibility in providing each participant the level appropriate activity they desire in a flexible and relaxed environment. If you want a challenging day of paddling, theyll provide you with that experience. If you prefer to take a day off from paddling and want to snorkel, hike or hang at camp that can also be arranged!

We will camp on two to three beautiful white sand beaches while exploring this island paradise. Our motorized support skiffs are used to carry heavy equipment from camp to camp so your kayaks are light and easy to paddle. The motorized skiffs also come in handy to pick up tired paddlers (we throw your kayak on a roof rack). We also use the skiffs to take folks snorkeling with whale sharks and sea lions or for opportunistic whale watching in the spring months when a humpback whale might be spotted off shore.

There is no other island in the Sea of Cortez quite like Espiritu Santo! If you love to camp at the waters edge, paddle, snorkel, hike and fish while enjoying a spectacularly scenic national park with abundant wildlife, this truly is your dream vacation!

The basecamp trip was a great retreat from Chicago winter! There was a lot of downtime for reading, napping, exploring our island home. The food was delicious, our guides were top-notch and the activities were super fun. We actually only kayaked twice (maybe 3 times) but there was a lot of snorkeling and some good hikes as well. On shore, the accommodations and food were excellent as well. Vouchers were given for the taxi on arrival, as well as dinner after the trip, which was a nice touch!

I went to Baja with my 11-year old great niece. We both really enjoyed it. The paddling level was just right; some long days but very do-able (31 miles around the island - a sense of accomplishment). The beaches, scenery, and wildlife were stupendous. The guides were excellent - very welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful. They watched carefully over our safety and enjoyment. The food was the best I've ever had on an adventure trip. Snorkeling with the sea lions (and a what shark) were particular highlights. Couldn't have been better.

My husband and I went on this trip with my 7 year old daughter and my 72 year old mother. There was something for everyone, and we all had the trip of a lifetime. The guides were better than excellent, really knowing the area and caring about it. When my mother and daughter got tired of kayaking, they rode in the panga. The beaches were beautiful with lots of opportunity to explore. The hotel in La Paz was great too, very clean and walking distance from everything we wanted to see and do in La Paz.

The trip is run by Mars Y Adventuras, who really knew their stuff. Detailed organization, they owned (or ran?) the hotel that we stayed in the first night, that we loved. They clearly have years of experience, had the whole thing planned and their planning certainly worked out - they had thought of everything. Example - they took the whole group off to the store in La Paz on the first morning to buy snacks and drinks. We had no less that four different diets in the group - every day they came up with delicious options for those people, no-one complained ever. We usually arrived at the campsite later than the crew - they usually had most if not all of the tents set up - such luxury! Some fisherman showed up with a gorgeous huge jack fish one night - we offered to pay for it with our own money, but the guides insisted that OARS/MYA had it covered. They knew the route and weather systems (they were all local to the area) so well that they were able to make snap, smart decisions about changes to the itinerary, and avoid really long sea crossings in rough weather. Their knowledge of the area was really outstanding, I don't we got a single "I don't know". They would sit and play our silly card games with us after dinner, even though they had to be up super early to make our delicious coffee. They happily took us out fishing every single morning before breakfast - even thought we never caught anything! The head guide had extraordinary people skills, never impatient or crabby, always

This trip was great for our family of 4 over Christmas. We wanted a different Christmas experience. We got an adventure, wonderful snorkeling, fun kayaking (two of us were complete novices and we did fine), and some interesting short hikes. (You can't do long hikes because they are restricted on the island.) I've done lots of organized trips and our guide was the best ever--helpful, humorous, and knowledgeable. We had such a good time that we're considering a repeat next year. This trip is a jewel!

This trip was well organized by the local company in La Paz. Everyone was professional, helpful and knowledgeable. Our guide was outstanding. He had a wealth of knowledge about the local area and people, in fact appeared to be related to many of the fishermen we encountered. He was well read and enjoyed sharing. The cooks were excellent and also friendly and helpful. They did cook way too much food and I hated to see it wasted. Wish they had a system for distributing the extra. The area we visited was amazing and the level of activity and rest was just right.
