Overview

Book
The sheer drama and joy of Gran Canaria's rugged interior remains almost undiscovered by British cyclists. Challenging climbs, sweeping descents, quiet roads, weather to make you grin, stunning coastal and mountain scenery, plus excellent hotels, make this a real winter cycling gem. No wonder the top pro biking teams return here winter after winter! After a warm-up day from our hotel in Maspalomas, we set off on a 5-day journey that takes us on an anticlockwise circuit of the island, revealing some of its most spectacular landscapes.

Our rides will include sections in the lusher, greener north of the island, as well as in the desert-like south and in the central mountains. Our first day's ride takes us to the remote village of Soria, overlooking the deepest reservoir on the island. Then, our journey begins for real and starts out with a 3-day traverse across the central massif, from the south-east coast across to tropical Agaete in the far north-west. Magnificent scenery unfolds as we ride inland, surrounded by the towering Barranco de Tirajana. From the quiet mountain village of St Bartolome, we make a loop ride via the highest point on the island at Pico de las Nieves (1951m) and the majestic panoramas at Cruz de Tejeda (1500m). From the high points of this challenging ride, we have views to distant Mount Teide on Tenerife. A day of thrilling descents, passing through the quirky village of Artenara, leads to the relaxing seaside resort of Agaete, before we set out to tackle the Dragon's Tail, a magnificent stretch of rugged coastal road, with snaking climbs and switchbacks and 300 metre drop-offs for most of the way, probably one of the best coastal rides in Europe. We end the tour with maybe the best climb on the island - 'Serenity', 9 kilometres of super-smooth tarmac, taking a series of hair-pins that culminate at the mountain village of Soria (900m). An adrenalin packed descent finally brings us back to Earth, sea level, mass tourism and a seafront caf where we can bask in the afterglow of an exhilarating blast round GC!

Great road cycling. I hadn't been to any of the Canary islands beforehand. Much more scenic inland than I was expecting. Challenging but doable climbs every day. Excellent local bike hire. A great week of relaxing cycling.

The accommodation was fabulous, with beautiful rooms, vast quantities of varied food, swimming pools and friendly staff. We were able to keep our bikes in our rooms. The cycling in Gran Canaria is wonderful, with stunning scenery, great climbs and descents and very good road surfaces. The route was well planned and allowed for extensions on a couple of days when things were going well. Weather fabulous! Don't expect to loose weight though - the food is too plentiful and too good! In 6 days we cycled all over the island - can't recommend this trip highly enough. Our guides were fantastic. We were looked after really well, and they organised excellent bikes for us all. He was very professional and safety conscious, but also managed to be encouraging and hilarious. She drove the support van and always seemed to be around when most needed. They made a fantastic team and helped turn an excellent holiday into a truly memorable one. This trip was brilliant. A superb way to kick start the season's training. Great cycling and great fun. The fantastic cycling in lovely scenery on good roads in superb weather with great companions and brilliant guides.

First class! I can't find anything negative to say about the local agent/trip leader. The guides looked after the group extremely well and responded to the individual needs of the each of the riders in the group. He knows the Island very well and was able to ensure the group had wonderful experience from start to finish. I really felt that the group was in solid hands. Most enjoyed - Not having to worry about all the logistics required to support such a trip (hotels, restaurants, stops, routes, etc) and knowing that someone in the group (trip leader) knew the area very well.

The staff were great to work with. I always received a timely reply, and I she didn't have an answer right away, she circled back to me shortly afterwards with the necessary information. Great customer service. Our guides) delivered an outstanding holiday experience. They anticipated everything, they were able to respond to everyone's questions and needs (and moods), and they were alot of fun as well. They know their work and their business thoroughly, and how to ensure customers were well taken care of. The chemistry between the guides also was a complement to making sure things ran smoothly and all details were taken care of. Lots of positive energy, support, laughter and kindness. My objective for this holiday was fully met - that is, to ride a bike every day on a beautiful island and discover a new part of the world. They put together an experience to meet that objective. My only observation is that the cycling was really hard given the mountainous terrain of Gran Canaria. It might make sense to rate this trip a bit tougher than for the average "weekend warrior" (that would be me) and give people a clearer sense of the intense nature of the climbing involved. That said, it was a fantastic experience and one I am really happy to have had the chance to experience.

You can't beat the warm weather and cycling in Gran Canaria in November. The roads are smooth, quiet and most drivers are considerate to cyclists. Highlights were climbing Serenity, and the descents of the last day towards Masopalomas. Most enjoyed - The warm weather when it's cold back home, the smooth roads, and riding with the rest of the group. The ride along the sea cliffs on Day 5 was another highlight.

The whole holiday was fantastic! Ray & Maria were professional, enthusiastic, supportive & fun. The cycling was superb with great bikes, smooth roads, very few vehicles (& well behaved drivers), & stunning views with a great variety of landscapes. It was challenging but achievable & I feel great to have completed it.

I Most enjoyed; challenging but achievable riding, and the fact that it involved a round tour rather the rides from a fixed base. In this instance I picked a trip which matched a fixed week, the trip looked exciting, provided good information, and the staff were very helpful.
