Overview

Book
Starting in Flagstaff, Arizona, this 87-mile section of the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon is an excellent introduction to the Canyon by dory as the Colorados rapids progress from small to extra large and the cliffs and rock layers of the Grand Canyon rise at an almost incomprehensible rate. We see some of the most striking and vibrantly colored limestone cliffs of all as we pass through Marble Canyon. This Grand Canyon Dory adventure includes visits to Native American ruins, the fern-fringed spring of Vaseys Paradise, the cool recess of Redwall Cavern, ancient fossils and a swim in the turquoise blue Little Colorado. At the end of the week of floating, hiking and camping in the Grand Canyon, we arrive at the boat beach near Phantom Ranch, deep in the granite gorge. Our last night is spent at Phantom Ranch before the 9.7-mile hike up to the South Rim of the Canyon the next morning.

This section of river is an excellent introduction to the canyon. The rapids start out moderate and grow larger each day, allowing you to become familiar with the boats movement through the rapids. Even though the biggest rapids in the canyon are below Phantom Ranch, this section has more fast moving water overall. The cliffs and rock layers rise at an almost incomprehensible rate, ending at Phantom Ranch where you spend your last night before your hike out of the canyon. Our adventure includes the vibrant colored limestone cliffs of Marble Canyon, visits to Native American ruins, ancient fossils, Redwall Cavern and a visit to the Little Colorado.

When I first considered a trip to the Grand Canyon, friends who are professional guides immediately said, "you HAVE to go on a dory trip!" OARS/Grand Canyon Dories was the first and only choice. From my first contact through the end of the trip, each stage was professional, well-organized, and staff are responsive and knowledgeable from administrative to operations to time on the river. While I have done numerous day trips in quiet and whitewater, this was my longest. I felt confident and excited about the adventure ahead, and the entire experience met and exceeded all I imagined. Packing lists and safety videos, online and personal communication about all aspects of the trip are available. On the river, the guides' deep knowledge about all things Grand Canyon was delivered with pride and passion. I'm hooked!

Truly unique experience, like the length, could even be two or three days longer. Sixteen days allows one to become well acclimated to the experience. This trip set the bar very high for other operators and trips.

This review is for all the not so outdoor adeventourous like me! Just got back from our 1 week Grand Canyon adventure and the most often used adjectives were "wow", "amazing", and "stupendous"! This is a fabulous trip. For all who are worried, the sleep mat is very comfortable for an older body, the food is fantastic, and the "groover" (or potty if you will) is private and a non-issue! All of our guides were great, very knowledgable and fun, but I must give a special shout out to Kate. It takes a very special woman to take a half dozen or so middle aged women for a group lesson in peeing in a river! This really is a trip of a lifetime!

It is true that the Grand Canyon is wonder to behold, but it is made even more magnificent when experienced from the river side; amongst the company of new friends and companions, led by experienced and knowledgeable guides. A place where you can immerse yourself not just in a fragment of the natural world but also the history of its enduring existence. This really is a trip to be on a 'bucket list'. Camp out, sleep under the stars, experience the enormity and power of the nature, thrive on the white water, and find true peace at the realisation that we are but floating passengers on the back of world to which we owe so much and for which we can never do too much to protect its natural environment.

This was absolutely the best trip for our family of four (two teenagers)! Even I, the non-camper of the group cried when we had to leave our over-the-top wonderful guides on the beach of Phantom Ranch. Everything was perfect, and just so much fun! The guides are the better than great. So much to see and do the entire time, with time to relax and enjoy the Canyon as well. My only regret is that we didn't do a longer trip.

What a wonderful experience we had? Floating down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon has long been on our bucket list particularly due to the fact that we have lived in the great state of Arizona for over 40 years. We had perfect weather, clear river water and a fantastic crew that ensured that our experience would be a truly once in a lifetime experience. We delight in having Dr. Potochnik as our trip leader with over 40 years of experience as a river guide and Geology expert on the evolution of the Grand Canyon. His daily classes and river hikes were truly amazing. We also were very fortunate to have Jeffe Aronson as one of the four boatmen on our adventure. Jeffe's sense of humor and great skills at singing and playing the guitar in the evenings was truly delightful. Moqui and John were also great to ride with. We do however believe Moqui would ensure that a nice big splash of cold Colorado River water would invade our laps to keep us from saying "weeeeeee" as we went through the rapids. Kath will always cherish the Colorado River clay beads made and fired by John during the trip. The raft support crew consisted of Gus and Ellie (Brother and Sister), Brian and the Australian's Arby and Blue. Good luck to Gus and Ellie as they move on from College to help support our social security system. What great kids and what a great way to spend the summer. I really enjoyed talking with our Aussi buddy Arby. He ensured that all of our cameras were working and our batteries c

I was nervous about the rapids and the "bathroom" situation before the trip. The guides all were so experienced, it became clear very early on that we would be safe and that we would have fun with regard to the rapids. The bathroom situation was so matter of factly explained and treated that is was ingrained in us that everybody "goes" and it is not a big deal, and it wasn't. We loved the food, very healthy and delicious. We were excited to be able to have some campfires in the evening. One of our support crew got out his guitar at night and told stories of meeting his idol Rambling Jack Elliott and sang his songs. We loved it, our whole group sat mesmerized as shy Sean sang and played music for us. It was wonderful. I loved looking out our tent skylight and seeing the walls of the canyons reflecting the moonlight. I loved the respect and pure love of the canyon that all of our guides and support crew had, it was truly contagious. I found myself wanting to learn more about the people who lived in this Grand place at different times in history. The hikes in the evening or at lunch or other times were so wonderful. Being able to see parts of the canyons few have seen and visited, seemed almost sacred to me. I felt great appreciation for those who blazed the trail so we could explore. I am a cautious mother of a lot of children, before the trip I was worried about all my children at home and not being able to contact them, but while out there on the water, away from everything,

This trip was great! Our guides, the scenery, the history, the geology and the food - all were great. Definitely go with the dories for a better feeling of the river and the peaceful atmosphere of the Canyon. Some surprises for me: how well I slept and how easy and scenic the toilets were! I recommend taking lightweight quick-dry long pants and a long-sleeved shirt for sun protection in the boat.

we loved the whole experience of being in nature, to learn so much about geology which is right infront of your eyes as well as human history in the ruins we found on side hikes. What absolutely made the trip was the staff. A balance of the most wonderful, passionate and personal men and women who all became friends of everyone in the group by the end of the trip. They not only safely rowed us through the whitewater, but also were the best cooks, teachers and even first aid helpers when that was needed. After dinner they turned into amazing storytellers and musicians!
