Overview

Book
Set aside as an American treasure in 1915 under the National Park Service, Dinosaur National Monument is an open-air archive of ancient Native American sites and far-out fossils unearthed by wind, water and time. Within the monument, our Green River rafting trip winds its way through three distinct canyons: Lodore, Whirlpool and Split Mountain all of which contain geological curiosities and rich human history. Lodore was the first major canyon encountered by John Wesley Powell and his men on their 1869 expedition. At its start, the river twists through a catacomb of scarlet slot canyons, yawning valleys and lush ledges of emerald evergreen and brush. Exploration is the mission of the day as the Green promises numerous side hikes, relaxing nights on the beach and moderate whitewater perfect for young families and laid-back vacationers.

The Gates of Lodore, deep within Dinosaur National Monument, is recognized as one of North Americas most beautiful river canyons. An archeological treasure chest, Lodore also offers a wealth of beauty, history, and recreation. Rippling red and brown sandstone is contrasted against the deep green trees and grasses that grow along the river and up the canyon walls, feeding local bighorn sheep. Ancient fossils co-exist with prehistoric American petroglyphs in these canyons. Then there is the river itselffirst navigated by Major John Wesley Powell on his famous descent that lead him through the Grand Canyon, the Green has long been a legendary whitewater run. Big-wave rapids are exciting for experienced boaters, but not so formidable as to discourage first time rafters. In fact, this is a river that welcomes people of all ages and experience levels.

Highlights

    • Ideal trip for families & first-time rafters
    • Numerous Class II-III rapids perfect for inflatable kayaking
    • Deep canyons and stunning red rock scenery
    • Prehistoric fossils, ancient American Indian ruins & Wild West hangouts

Where do I begin? My green River Trip was fabulous! Magnificent scenery, Thrilling rapids, Pleasant company and competent, efficient, fun-to-be-with guides. I went on this trip as a single and had never done this type of guided trip before. I was hesitant, thinking that 3 nights and 4 days would be too long. I now wish it had been longer. My group was very diverse every one was helpful and friendly and seemed to get along very well. The guides were awesome. All were professional and each had a specialty. Lee was the coordinator, Russell was the go-to-guy for information on the local history and geology and Sara was knowledgeable on the river and river-guiding and always wore a beaming smile. Although inexperienced, I never felt afraid to tackle the rapids in my "ducky" because I was confident in the judgement of our guides. The atmosphere was light and fun-filled but the guides remained serious where our safety was concerned. To top it off, they magically produced excellent, very delicious meals. I don't plan to make this trip again (only because there are many new places to see), but I can't wait to book another trip with OARS.

The guides for my trip (Matt, Sean, Jay, and Chris) were outstanding! Experts in their field. Adhered to safety standards in a professional manner; felt completely confident and at ease at all times. They were knowledgeable of the river, history, geology and shared the information in an interesting manner. Since this was my first rafting trip I was able to learn a lot; I enjoyed the hikes and experiences that go with camping along the river, and the food was wonderful. Thanks O.A.R.S!

I am a veteran who suffers from severe anxiety, I only wish I felt as confident about myself on the first day as I did on the last. I am exited to soon purchase my own kayak (rubber duckie) so I can continue this awesome experience.

I booked this trip for myself and my 9- and 7-year old niece and nephew. I wanted to travel, adventure and camp with them, but I'm neither an experienced camper, river rider, nor parent. This was a great choice for us. #1 - the guides took care of each of us - from engaging the 9 year old with laughter to salving the 7 year old's fears; and to giving me some time by keeping an eye out for the little ones overall. #2 - this was a great trip in the low season for inexperienced folks like me, and for the kids ages. They had fun, adventure and arrived to the take out sun bronzed and happy. #3 - the guides are both knowledgable and personable which made the time pass with interest in addition to the stunning scenery #4 - the others on the trip bring widely ranged life experience to the river and it makes for interesting conversations and observations over the campfire, in the boats and overall

This trip was absolutely incredible. The guides were capable, knowledgeable, and friendly, and they had a great dynamic. The scenery was stunning, especially when compounded with the historical and geological information the guides shared with us. The meals were ridiculously impressive and delicious, and the ingenuity of the camp setup was fascinating. I enjoyed myself immensely and my only disappointment was that the trip didn't last a week more.

Happy Camper

The whole family thoroughly enjoyed this trip. The scenery was spectacular and pristine. The guides were incredibly organized and accommodating. There was a wide variety of activities for everyone - inflatable kayaks, SUP boards, paddle raft, and hikes. The food was far better than any camp food we've had before! It was a great time to unplug and unwind.

From the first night meeting our trip leader to the time we said goodbye to new friends on the last day, this trip was a blast. Everything was well-organized, and while safety was prioritized, there was also a great sense of adventure. From rafting to swimming to hiking, there was no lack of excitement. The guides were fantastic-- they spoke endless facts about the canyons and the river and were such wonderful people to get to know. I will definitely be taking another OARS multi day trip and I think everyone should experience it at least once in their life!

Great Green River Trip

We had a terrific time on our 4-day/3-nights, adults only Gates of Lodore rafting trip over the Fourth of July with Don Hatch/OARS. The crew was very safety conscious, personable, accommodating, and knowledgeable about area ecology and history. A special nod to Tony, one of the guides. His calm demeanor, rapids knowledge, and skill with the oars made the trip especially pleasurable and anxiety-free. This was our second trip with OARS. We are so happy with OARS. that we are going with them on a 15-day dory trip in the Grand Canyon next year.

The trip was everything we had hoped for. It was very well run; the guides were great and were very safety conscious; the scenery was spectacular; the food was freshly prepared and delicious at all meals; there was a good balance of time on the water and exploring on land; the group dynamic were great, everyone participated and interacted very well. We can't think of a single thing that we would change.

Had the absolute best trip with Josh and Yeti rafting the Gates of Ladore. We lucked out and the water levels were extremely high which made for quite an adventurous trip. If you're looking for big rapids you need to go at the beginning of June as that's when water levels are the highest. Also, if you want to paddle (which I would highly recommend), make sure you specify that you want a paddle boat and not just oar boats ahead of time so they can try to arrange. Will 100% be back on another trip with OARS and will request the guys we were lucky enough to have as our guides.
