Overview

Book
Much like a fine baklava, modern day Greece is layered with history so rich and complex that the only way to do it justice is to see it for yourself. Learn how the spectacular hanging monasteries of Meteora protected modern Hellenic culture from invading Turks, then trace a path through tumble-down ruins in Delphi. Visit the site of the world’s first Olympics, stop in at pretty seaside villages in Nafplion, and discover the secrets behind a proper Greek coffee, all on this whirlwind adventure.

Highlights

    • Knowledgeable local guides take the hassle out of navigating Athens. Head straight for the most incredible ancient sites, such as the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus.
    • Experience a different side of Greece by staying in the medieval village of Dimitsana at our 'feature stay', a gorgeous 7th-century township set on top of two hills and a gorge in little visited Central Arcadia. Share a coffee or 'Greek delight' with a monk during a visit to nearby Prodromos monastery.
    • Visit the legendary theatres of the very first Olympic Games – the stadium, gymnasium, wrestling school, priest houses, temples and hippodrome.
    • With magical monasteries built on a series of ancient rock pinnacles, Meteora is one of Greece's most extraordinary sights.
    • Discover the many flavours of Greek cuisine. There's nothing quite like dining on rich and hearty moussaka or grilled lamb and tzatziki in a traditional taverna.
    • Stop at the village of Galaxidi or Nafpaktos for a visit to a traditional family-owned bakery offering pastries, stuffed with cheese, spinach, chicken or potato, and the famous sesame round bread. Chat to the owner and get updated on the latest gossip.

The highlights of Greece tour was a comprehensive yet quite leisurely exploration of the main archeological sites of ancient Greece. However it was more than just piles of stones. Georgia brought the history alive with passion and vast knowledge of Greek mythology whilst also providing insight into modern Greek peoples, politics and culture. The scenery of the mountains, olive groves and villages of mainland Greece are every bit as beautiful as the pictures we more often see of the Greek Islands.

Good trip of archaeological sites of Greece. The island hopping part of trip had lots of free time to explore by yourself. That suited me for that part of trip only.

We visited some of the major historical sites on the mainland; the ancient ones awe inspiring in their antiquity and magnificence, and the more recent(!) the Byzantine monasteries with their fabulous frescoes. If the days were sometimes long (the mainland is large), there was sufficient time at the sites and at the end of the day to eat and explore. We were a group of 13 and our leader, had degrees in art history and archeology. She was not only very knowledgeable, she impressed us all with her warmth, humour and inclusiveness. For people interested in our history, in Greece and in art we would highly recommend this tour.

Experiencing the diverse scenery and sites of mainland Greece were truly wonderful. But as with most tours its the people that make the difference. I was very lucky to enjoy a wonderful company of fellow travellers and an excellent guide who set a benchmark for me in tour guides. Thankyou

A great way to see many of the major attractions of Greece, in good comfort and at a reasonable pace in a small intimate group.

This was the only small group tour I could find that offers a comprehensive itinerary of the most desired sites on the mainland of Greece. I especially loved the time we spent in Arcadia and Dimitsana which is a stunning, unique, off the beaten tourist track area of Greece and according to our guide is only visited on the tour. The history of the archeological sites visited is overwhelming as are the incredible vistas found at every turn.

The level of success of these trips is very dependent on the guide. While you need to "get along" with your fellow travellers and this is not difficult the competence and personality of the leader is crucial even if the groups are small in size.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip of Ancient Greece. I was amazed by the fact that the temples we saw were built around the 5th century BC and were exquisitely carved. Our guide was wonderful and knew the history and mythology so well that she brought the sights to life for us.
