Overview

Book
Classic volcano climbing holiday and adventure in Iceland, walking in the land of fire and ice. A simply breathtaking variety of Icelandic mountain scenery makes this one of the most unusual climbing expeditions on offer. From the exuberant city of Reykjavik, our walking and climbing adventure begins with the easy ascent of Vorduskeggi Peak (805m) overlooking Lake Thingvellir. On this first day we also get the chance to visit the geothermal area at Geysir and to see the mighty Gullfoss waterfall. The explosive volcano, Hekla, is our next climbing goal and involves a testing 1000 metre climb, across ash and snow, to reach its fissured, steaming summit.

After Hekla, we then make the spectacular crossing of the wildly volcanic highland region of Iceland, the Fjallabak, with our 4x4 vehicles at times almost submerged as we ford several rivers en route. A stop-off at the famous Landmannalaugar hot pools is obligatory. Arriving at Skaftafell, we have 2 days during which our principal objective is to make the ascent of Hvannadalshnukur (2119m) the highest mountain in Iceland. With 24 hours of daylight, the long and straightforward climb to Iceland's high point certainly carries no risk of our being benighted! With our climbing objectives achieved, we then have the option to explore Skaftafell National Park and to make an excursion to Jokulsarlon, where the amazing, iceberg-filled glacial lagoon has provided the backdrop for more than one James Bond movie. This brilliant walking and climbing adventure in Iceland draws to a close with a visit to the Skogarfoss waterfall, as we complete our circuit and return to Reykjavik.

Highlights

    • Summit Hvannadalshnukur the highest peak in Iceland
    • Exciting ascent of Hekla one of Iceland`s most active volcanoes
    • Weird and wonderful Fjallabak landscapes
    • See geysers, hot springs, waterfalls and a glacial lagoon

I was happy with your service as queries were answered helpfully and promptly. Hotel in Reykjavik was clean and comfortable, the breakfast was good, the staff were helpful and it was convenient for the centre. The food on the trail was one of the unexpected highlights of the trip. Plentiful, varied, well prepared. Something to look forward to everyday. The itinerary was ambitious, but we did it all. Some days were 'full on' but there were always choices if you wanted to take it easy, which we rarely did. The leader helped the group to gel quickly with his humour and enthusiasm. He quickly got the 'measure' of the group and was sensitive to the various abilities and ambitions of the group members. The leader and the driver were a good team. He made some very good decisions based on weather and local information available. The itinerary was flexible to give the group a good chance of climbing Iceland's highest peak. He chose the day and timing of our ascent perfectly. He was knowledgeable so we learnt lots about Iceland and had lots of interesting discussions. Overall a brilliant leader who made a major contribution to our enjoyment of the trip.

Our guide was top notch! A very personable guide, we very quickly felt relaxed and confident with him. The weather conditions and forecast for our week were not brilliant and he was having to make some real judgement calls all the time in order to deliver the programme and make it safe for all members of the party. This he did. He took us down short of the summit on the first hill because of high winds, a judgement we all agreed with. On the two big mountains (Hekla and Hvanndalshnukur)he got us to the top in clear weather windows amongst what were otherwise cloudy and often wet days. A busy and interesting programme was provided along with more than ample and interesting food. This continued right through to our final evening in Reykjavik when we experienced a good local night out. Most important of all perhaps was the guide's personality and humour which really made this an excellent group to be with all week and more than the sum of its programme parts. I feel knackered and feel like I've been stretched in terms of my own abilities and ambitions, perfect! Both I and my wife have had a really memorable time. I would like to reiterrate my appreciation of our guide and our driver.

The country was fantastic and other members of the group great fun. Having the right guide is essential and on this trip we certainly had the right person. Agust was one of the best guides I have had, so knowledgeable, experienced and great fun. The trip was wonderful and better than what I'd expected.

The local trip leader seemed to know everything about his home country, and he was also an excellent mountain guide. I do not think we could have had a better leader! It was a very active week, none stop, but very enjoyable. I was completely relaxed by the end of the week. I enjoyed the mountain climbing, the wonderful scenery, and the food.

If you want to really experience/see Iceland, you will enjoy this tour. Our guide led us on beautiful hikes into the mountains and across glaciers. The third peak is challenging. You will need to be in good physical condition and have the proper gear. On our rest days between hikes, we also traveled to some beautiful locations. The scenary around Jokulsarlon were breathtaking.

Excellent trip, great guide, great food (including some local specialties). Iceland is extremely photogenic as a country but it is also very wet and very windy. We only had one day of relatively ok weather in our week and this seems to be more the rule than the exception. Of the three peaks, we had to turn back on the first one because we were about to take off given how strong the wind (and the horizontal rain) was, we did not summit Hekla because of wind and clouds. But three of us got to the highest point in Iceland. This was a great and fun day although we had no views at all and walked in the caldera in a complete white out! The hikes were complemented by great excursions and sightseeings which led to a great trip overall!
