Theres no shortage on thrill seeking too. Some of Idahos most famous whitewater rapids, gorges and viewscapeslike Demons Drop, Snow Hole and Blue Canyon are just around the bend. The Lower Salmon River exhibits a side of Idaho seldom seen by most visitors. Distinguished from the forests and mountains that make up much of Idahos wilderness, this river runs through the warmer, drier canyon country of the Seven Devils. The Lower Salmon is also a veritable treasure chest of intriguing stories and relics from the past. Known human history dates back to a mind-boggling 10,000 years ago when the first humans inhabited the river canyon, leaving a wealth of Native American rock art.

This was a great trip at a great time of year to introduce the fun of rafting to kids. Just the right level of increasingly exciting rapids and fun activities for the kids.

It was all my son Andrew's idea. A family raft trip down the Lower Salmon. He signed up his family ( wife Kelly, daughter Azalea, son Oscar ). When Barbara and I heard about the trip, we got permission to tag along. Put-in was on Sunday 23 August. By then most kids have gone back to school. Not so Azalea and Oscar. When we arrived in Lewiston we learned that we six Scavullos would be the only folks on this trip. OK except that we had no one to borrow books from when we finished reading the ones we brought along. We did take advantage of the trip library stored in an ammo can. We did not see another soul until late Wednesday when we joined the Snake River and saw a few jet boats. We had our pick of campsites all along the way. Andrew and I spent time in the inflatable kayaks. Andrew did great. I got dumped in a rapid. Mind you, it was my own fault. Diego, our guide, had warned me to stay away from the water surging against the rock wall. What, me listen? Our grandchildren had a ball. Azalea caught her first fish. Oscar loved cavorting around camp. We all saw big horn sheep, deer, river otter, golden eagle, bald eagle, even a single salmon swimming up stream in all the wrong season. Geologist Andrew was enthralled by the massive basalt slabs along the canyons. At one point we saw several granite blocks. Now, how in the heck did the granite get there? Must be one powerful river in the spring after heavy snows. All of us, even Azalea and Oscar, are seasoned campers. Instinct

The OARS experience was great from the start. The booking process was easy, and the office staff were quick to answer any and all questions. The trip was extremely well-organized, the equipment was in excellent condition and the personnel were personable and professional. The food was off-the-charts great, and I did not have to cook! I will definately book another trip with OARS.

Great family trip! My 10 year old daughter and I took this trip while DAD was at the ICAST trade show in Florida. Perfect Trip! She can't stop talking about her favorite guide, Emerald! The whole experience was fantastic! All the guides went out of their way to ensure our full satisfaction, fun and safety. The scenery; white sand beaches, clear, warm water were incredible. Wildlife; Mountain goats, otter, osprey were amazing! For the thrill seekers, I highly reccomend Stand Up Paddling down the Salmon. The River is Class 3 with great, runable rapids and calm sections in between. Whitewater on a SUP is unforgetable! Thank you Chris, Derrick, Lucas, Jared, and of Course...EMERALD for creating some priceless family memories for Kirra and I. XOXO The Johnson's

OARS is a great rafting outfitter that has been around for a long time! We traveled with them 20 years ago and it's great to see that after all these years the high quality and wonderful crew still remains! The trip is so well run from the planning to the final drop off back to the hotel.

After a fabulous and exciting intermediate kayak school trip in July 2011 on the Main Salmon, the beer tasting trip through the gorges of the Lower Salmon must have been designed for me. With two friends who also are beer and river trip enthusiasts, we had another trip to write home about. The guide staff and leader were non-pareille. Exceeded our expectations, which were very high. Can't wait to book with O.A.R.S. again. Everything top-drawer, from reservations through take-out at the end of the trip. Paddle raft, dorie, and kayak offered variety and thrills.

Our guides (Eric, Deb, and Kyle) were very knowledgeable and personable. We got to enjoy the lower Salmon at a leisurely pace, and in a variety of watercraft (dory, raft, and kayak). The meals were all excellent. It was obvious that our guides truly enjoyed their jobs. OARS did a great job of providing us with all the pre-trip information we needed in order to arrive prepared. We would definitely take another trip with OARS.

OARS gave our group the variety of boat options that we were looking for in an adventure. Inflatable kayaks, dory, paddle boat and raft. The guides Deb, Christina, Morgan, Dan and Seneca were awesome and easy going. The trip was a bonding experience for our family. With great "Turn Down" service. It was LOVELY !!! You will see the Martin family again.
