Where the fertile North Indian plains meet the mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh, the hills rise abruptly to a picturesque snow-capped crest known as the Dhaula Dhar. Here, during the days of the British Raj, a number of hill-stations were established, such as Dharamsala and Shimla. Flying in to Amritsar, there is the chance to witness the colourful and dramatic Pakistan-India border closing ceremony at nearby Wagah, whilst our early morning visit to the Sikh religion's amazing gilded Golden Temple creates a magical first impression of India.

Then, setting of on our journey into the Himalayan foothills, we drive to Kangra for an introductory ride, before climbing up through Dharamsala to Mcleodganj, home of the Dalai Lama. Biking on village roads, with views of the Dhaula Dhar ranges, we follow the Beas River and then one of its tributaries, gradually gaining height up to the Jalori Pass (3135m). En route, we'll see ancient temples and traditional towns and villages and have the opportunity to learn a little about the culture of the local people. Well off-the-beaten-track, we'll meet few other Westerners while biking and our efforts will be rewarded by the unspoilt scenery, including views of the distant Indian Himalaya. Travelling by bike, we can expect a friendly reception from the local population and there will be the chance to stop and take tea with them at wayside 'dhabas'. We end this superb, steady-paced and fully vehicle-supported biking adventure in Shimla, with its slightly chaotic mix of modern Indian tourism and faded colonial charm.

    • Himalayan foothill mountain biking, off the beaten track

Overall Rating

Sarah Slade (Buckinghamshire, UK)

Most enjoyed the Golden Temple at Amritsar, Cycling down the Sutlej valley a superb gorge and the challenging ride up to the Jalori Pass - quite tough but with a great sense of achievement. Leader and support crew were always attentive, cheerful and inspired confidence. They added to the experience without being intrusive. The mechanic did sterling work and there was no issue with changing e.g. brake blocks or cables if we were unhappy. Thoroughly enjoyed the challenge! My third time to India and I think the best. For a fit, regular cyclist the cycling was OK. Not easy, but do-able. Hoped it would be good and it was.
