Overview

Book
North of the main ranges of the Indian Himalaya, the remote province of Ladakh is beyond the influence of the monsoon and perfect for trekking during the summer holiday period. Our super, family-specific itinerary starts out by way of the flight to the Ladakhi capital of Leh, where we spend 5 days acclimatising, taking things nice and easy whilst exploring some of the colourful Buddhist monasteries of the upper Indus Valley. We visit a Tibetan Refugee Centre and enjoy a rafting trip on the Indus. We then set off on an easy-paced 5-day trek into the scenically splendid foothills of the Ladakh Range, with lots of opportunity for interaction with the friendly local people in the many villages we pass through. Throughout our trek and especially from the several 4000 metre passes on our route, there are wonderful views of the Zanskar Mountains to the south. After our time in Ladakh, this excellent holiday is topped off with a visit to Agra and the magnificent Taj Mahal.

Highlights

    • Scenic and easy paced 5 day mini trek in Ladakh's Northern India
    • 1 day whitewater rafting on the River Indus
    • Meet the charming Ladakhi people and see colourful Buddhist Monasteries
    • Visit the incomparable Taj Mahal, Agra

We loved the time spent in the villages. Rafting was particularly glorious for son age 12 and represented a wonderful change from our other acclimatization experiences. The trek itself was fabulous and allowed hours and hours where we did not see another human being whilst in the mountains. The feeling of accomplishment that my family shared whilst on trek was beyond words. Support staff were superb, absolutely superb. Finally, our Ladakhi guide took us to his home for tea one afternoon following an acclimatization hike in Leh. It was a rare pleasure to see a bit of regular life in Ladakh while we sipped a cup of tea.I was not expecting such an authentic experience in Ladakh. I suppose I was anticipating a rather sanitized, diluted trek with my kids. Much to my pleasant surprise, the trip was a "real" trek and greatly exceeded my expectations. The occasional afternoons with some "down time" were welcome to walk into town, play an impromptu game of cricket, or write in my travel journal. The time in Delhi/Agra was just about right: time to see the sights but not excessive. My research suggested that your company was a top outfitter for trekking and one of the most hightly rated for family adventure travel.

We really enjoyed the holiday - great variety, good mix of culture and activity and a real sense of adventure. We had every confidence in the people looking after us. There were lots of highlights for us and we have great memories of our trip. I think the acclimatisation time allowed was spot on, and we were all well on the trek. Our guide in Ladakh was excellent and great fun. She had us "sussed" very quickly, was very professional, knowledgeable and tried her best to ensure we had a great trip.

This trip is a grand combination of a challenging (but doable!) trek for families combined with a dip in buddhist culture in Ladhak as well as Mogul/muslin history in Agra including the splendid Taj Mahal. Our children (11, 13 J) enjoyed the company of the two other families as well as the cricket playing sherpas. Their highlight was the white water rafting tour in indus river. The design of the tour starting at over 3000 m including the preparation for the trek was very well fitting the the needs of families. We saw several great buddhist monasteries but also visited a school for Tibetan refuge children. Food remained Indian spicy but our cooking team indulge us with Indian-continental delights. Agra and Taj Mahal were full of most impressing historical and cultural information (more for the grown ups), but the kids enjoyed taking picture and dipping in the refreshing hotel pool. Thank you for the memorable tour and especially our excellent sherpa Uden in Lee.
