Overview

Book
This amazing adventure holiday combines the best of Madagascar's trekking with a chance to experience its cultural and natural variety. Travelling from Tulear on the south-west coast to the capital city of Antananarivo, our first walk is within the Isalo National Park, walking amongst dramatic rock formations, open grassland and forest. A transfer then brings us to the Andringitra Mountains for a 3-day trek and the opportunity to summit the huge granite dome of Peak Boby (2658m), Madagascar's second highest mountain.

We aim to get to the summit as the sun rises - an unforgettable experience. Continuing our journey north, we enjoy the contrast of a day-walk in the decidedly lush rainforest of Ranomafana, home to medicinal plants and several species of lemurs. Our last stop is in Andasibe/Perinet National Park to see the amazing Indri indri lemur with their distinctive call, an experience that can absolutely not be missed when going to Madagascar. Craft workshop visits, colourful produce markets and village walks allow plenty of opportunity to meet the friendly people of this engaging and little-known land. Providing an unbeatable mix of walking, sightseeing and wildlife this is the perfect holiday recipe for Madagascar.

Highlights

    • Trekking through the spectacular landscapes of Isalo and Andringitra National Parks
    • Dawn views from Peak Boby (Imarivolanitra), 2nd highest peak in Madagascar
    • Walk through the lush rainforest of Ranomafana teeming with incredible and endemic flora and fauna
    • Unique wildlife spotting, especially the Indri Indri, the largest lemur only found at Andasibe

A fantastic trip, well organized, appropriate accommodations, very adequate food, and of course all in an interesting part of the world. I most enjoyed overall planning, pacing, accommodations and of course the scenery and sights. My 8th trip and looking forward to a 9th!

Hotel accommodation was far better than I could ever expect. some quite stunning. Tents great, nice that they were erected by the crew. Excellent mess tent and facilities. Food magnificent tool, great in hotels and wonderful while camping. The crew was great, the driver very calm and safe, crew on trek friendly and helpful and Niri the trip leader was superb, very knowledgeable, efficient, friendly, patient and great English. Also, he is a very nice person. The walking was really good, longish days but plenty of time for wildlife spotting etc. The transfers were absolutely necessary in view of the distances i involved between parks, but the vehicle was excellent and the journeys themselves were full of interest in terms of scenery, people and seeing Madagascar. They were in the main completed in the day in question and did not in any way compromise the trip.

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It met my expectations (in fact exceeded them). Our trip leader and all the support staff (camp crew, local park guides, both on the main trip and the extension) were excellent. My most enjoyed parts of the trip were the trek up to Pk Boby, Ranomafana and Perinet National Parks. Wildlife (lemurs, chameleons and a range of interesting insects)was plentiful and exciting to observe.

I enjoyed most of it - except some of the inevitably long days of travelling, but that had to be done in order to see and do what we did and I liked the way theses days were broken up with good stops for eating, craft demonstrations and markets etc. I loved the lemur spotting and was glad we had chosen this time of the year to go when there were not too many mossies or insects, not too hot or uncomfortable. I was a bit disappointed we did not see more baobab trees or orchids but recognize that we were not in the right areas or time of visiting. Overall I thought it was a very good mix of wild country walking, seeing day to day aspects and sights of daily living and a mix of ecological and geographic regions. I Came back exhausted (always the sign of an intense 'holiday' experience! Lots of adventures and tales to tell - and we had a good crowd to travel with - 10 was a good number. This was my first adventure trip and although classed at the low /moderate end of the scale for walking - I found it to be challenging enough. I went because my husband has had good experiences of travelling with you. Out of all the companies offering a similar trip yours was the best mix of activities offered along with the the best value in the inclusion of all meals which on the whole were excellent and especially when camping. What was nice was a traditional wallet 'present' we were given with our details, along with map of Madagascar and a few postcards.

We went to Madagascar to see the lemurs and we saw 9 different types but in the end the real fun was meeting all the different people. The porters singing in harmony around the camp fire will be an experience I will never forget - absolutely fantastic. We most enjoyed the walking and the camping. The interaction with the guides and the local people and the singing. The visit to the Chameleon sanctuary and the greater bamboo lemur sitting calmly on a branch a few feet away eating his bamboo breakfast and finally the family of Indri Indri nearly deafening me as they called out from the trees just above my head.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and have already recommended this trip to my work colleagues and would recommend this trip to others. Another excellent trip with you and their local partners. All crew members and local guides/ porters/ cooks were fantastic. They would go the extra mile to help. Local guides were extremely knowledgeable. I am always amazed at how the cooks on trek can prepare such awesome food with such lack of facilities. The trek guides were fantastic, professional, knowledgeable, polite and I trusted them with my life. The spotters and guide in Ranomafana were excellent at finding many species of lemur and other wildlife. All local guides were very professional and experts in their field. The trip leader always gave us choices and was very flexible with how we wanted each day to run and where to stop/ eat when travelling from place to place. The trek leader was always keen to receive feedback about all aspects of the trip especially the accommodation which has been changed in light of previous comments from other groups. The new hotel we tried just outside Perinet National Park was very unique (almost glamping!)and a pleasure to stay in. The tents used were roomy and good quality hard wearing and in excellent condition. The trip was varied and packed full to utilise the time to its maximum which is what always attracts me to these trips.

Forget the myths and legends that surround Madagascar- this is poor nation with its problems of poverty, corruption, exploitation and environmental destruction. However, there are real nuggets of gold to be found in the wildlife parks and the people. As soon as you arrive there are airport staff looking to help you through representive who took us to the hote in Antananarivo. The hotel was clean and food was good. The adventure really states when we arrived in Tulear where we met our guides for the trip.. These two made the trip with their knowledge and guitar playing ! Especially of Madagascan favourites such as bob Marley. Our trip to the Isalo national park is not for the faint hearted with river crossings, bridges with missing planks and a 4x4 that was prone to stall (which we push startled numerous times) but we carried on undaunted - we were adventurers and pioneers! This part of the trip was the highlight - amazing scenary, amazing views and the local villages so welcoming. Never did so much in a few days - trekked across lunar landscapes, climbed Mnt Boby at night for the sunrise (when we got to the top it was misty, but hey ho! ) swam in the pools of canyons. On the final night had one heck of a party with our porters. We showed them some of our dance moves - rick astley eat your heart out. The food was good and plentiful - zebu kebabs just melted in the mouth. After this we visited two other national parks in Ranofana and Perinet on the hunt for lemurs - with the pa

This trip has something of everything - trekking, cultural immersion, wildlife spotting. The chameleons are amazing and lemurs are a lot of fun to see, and occasionally they come very close to you. Be prepared with the camera at all times that you're in the jungle! The food can be a bit heavy if you're not used to eating as much rice as the Malagasy do. Be sure to try out the hot sauce at every restaurant - they all make their own and they are each unique (and VERY hot).
