Overview

Book
The Lower Klamath River in California gently winds through scenic splendor in the northwest corner of this state near the Oregon border. One of the first rivers in California to be granted National "Wild and Scenic" river status, the Klamath River runs free for 180 miles to the Pacific Ocean. The Klamath is treasured for its scenic beauty, diverse wildlife and recreational opportunities. The Lower Klamath section of this California river is a special place, often adored by our littlest guests.

The Klamath's water bubbles with bouncy, easy rapids and warm, pleasant swimming holes ideal for young children and families on an adventure vacation in California. The focus of this rafting experience on the Lower Klamath is helping kids gain confidence and interest in the outdoors while the adults kick back and relax. As is true for so many other California rivers, the Lower Klamath region is steeped in history. Gold miners and colorful characters flooded the region in the mid 1800s and old mining sites line the river in various places. Your kids will get completely absorbed trying to find their fortune with a gold pan and youll have fun watching them try.

The Lower Klamath River gently winds through scenic splendor in the northwest corner of California. This trip is ideal for families with young children and beginner rafters. You will be rafting on a warm, gentle section of the Klamath River that flows through the historic mountains and valleys of northern California. The Klamath is California's second largest river (with the Sacramento being the largest). One of the first rivers in California to be granted National Wild and Scenic status, the Klamath runs free for 180 miles through northern California to the Pacific Ocean. Wow! We took our kids (ages 6 & 8) on their first overnight rafting trip this summer. My wife and I have been on many similar trips with other outfitters but OARS introduced us to heretofore unknown level of quality. The trip leader and guides were knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, fun-loving, safety conscious and great with travelers from age 5 to 75. If you're thinking about planning a family trip, this is a winner.

Our oars trip was excellent family fun. We had lots of little kids on our trip camping and rafting down the gentle lower Klamath. It was downright luxurious for a camping experience, with excellent food, kind and knowledgable guides, and so many details attended to ahead of time. The guides were attentive to the little kids, making things fun for them each step along the way. It was a great memorable family vacation.

Our guides were great, the food was really good and the river was very scenic. This was a perfect first trip for our extended family that included; Grandpa (72), Father (40), Niece (22), Son (12), Son's friend (13), and Daughter (10). We had varying ages and levels of comfort on the water. There were a lot of small rapids, but none that were big. If you are looking for a super adventurous trip this would not be it. It was perfect to get my young daughter who is not a daredevel comfortable and the Duckies were perfect to keep the older more adventerous boys occupied. We would definitely reccommend it to others!

Our guides Corrine and Scott were very well prepared, friendly, and experienced. Our family of 7 had a wonderful time on the river on both the rafts and inflatable kayaks that they had as an option (the boys loved them!) In addition to the professional handling of the trip, breakfast, lunch and dinner amazed us. If forced to describe them in one word, it would have to be "gourmet". Each day we were treated to new sights and surprises: Blue Heron, Bald Eagles, jumping fish, frogs, turtles, dear and even a black bear! Corrine and Scott went out of their way to make sure all our needs and wants were taken care of and we could not have asked for anything more. This is the ideal family trip for novices and those with more experience - a highly recommended trip!

Huck Finn was SO right when he said, "You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft." This is the perfect entry-level river trip, guaranteed to cure anyone suffering from "nature deficit disorder" or simply looking for some relaxation and family bonding time. As busy parents, it's sometimes hard to let go of all that needs to be done, but the OARS guides make it EASY...and dare I say, you feel PAMPERED! They KNOW kids and they KNOW how to reacquaint adults to the kid that lives in the most grown up of grown-ups. You'll YEE-HAW through the rapids, jump from boulders into plunging pools, and be sure to ask to play our family's favorite game: "Hunker Down Duckies!" While highway 96 parallels the river for much of the trip, you feel like you are in your own world. We only saw one other group along the river for our entire trip. While the guides are extremely organized, the pace never feels rushed or regimented. Our family can't wait to book another more challenging trip next summer!

We did the Wine on the River tour with OARS last year and were blown away with our experience. The guides were fantastic, the food amazing, the experience overall was perfect. We couldn't wait to take our kids on the river to experience it and this summer we did the Lower Klamath. It was absolutely the perfect vacation - not to mention the perfect way to camp and enjoy the outdoors. We loved floating and swimming all day and then to be so well taken care of when we pulled into camp for the night. The kids were happy and the grown ups were happy. Many fond memories! We hope to make a trip with OARS an annual family trip!
