Overview

Book
An jaw-dropping landscape of towering peaks, snow-capped volcanos, ancient sites, incredible cities, delicious food and one of the the warmest welcomes on the planet, Iran is hospitality on a grand scale with breathtaking landscapes to match! Home to the highest peak in the Middle East, Mt Damavand (5671m) is a magnificent snow-capped giant and the highest volcano in Asia. Plus lying close to Tehran, one of the most easily accessible peaks over 5600m in the world. Our adventure starts in Tehran before we head to the Alborz Mountains to trek and acclimatise on the Hesarschal plateau (3750m). From this superb mountain amphitheatre we camp and climb Alam Kuh (4848m), Irans second highest mountain. Next we follow the Caspian Sea and turn our excitement to Damavand, a holiday highlight. Standing on the summit at over 5600m is exhilarating, and our preparation in the Albroz Mountains should provide the all-important acclimatisation. After Damavand we make the perfect transition from mountains to culture as we fly south to Shiraz and visit the home of the great poets. Next it's the awesome UNESCO site of Persepolis, the ruined city of the Persians, before finally travelling to beautiful Isfahan the Pearl of Persia. With its palaces, decorative mosques, elegant bridges and Grand Bazaar, Isfahan is one of Iran's highlights. Ancient Persia offers a wonderful melting pot of culture and cuisine alongside breathtaking trekking and a welcome like nowhere on earth. We've waited a long time but Iran is finally back. So if you're looking for a holiday which combines trekking, sightseeing, all meals and memories to last a lifetime, then this is the perfect choice!

I was expecting the great mountain walking and beautiful Muslim architecture. But if I told you that Iran is a safe, secular, tolerant, friendly, modern country, would you believe me? OK, the country is ultimately ruled by clerics, who have banned alcohol and made women cover their hair with headscarves in public. But despite this, the Iranians we met (and lot's of people will approach you for a friendly chat), while being very proud of their country, have a surprisingly European outlook and don't seem to be lacking in freedom. Iran is very different to the version you see on the news.

I hope this holiday continues, for others, as good as it was for us on the first. The trekking was challenging with toilet arrangements camping and at the Damavand hut being basic at best but the places and people amply made up for that. Our guides were excellent and especially skilled at their jobs. They provided lots of laughs as I'm sure she always does. The mountains are beautiful. The cultural part gave us a taster of what Iran has in terms of ancient history and the stunning beauty of the mosques and shrines. Again our guide gave us backgrounds and history of the places we visited PLUS making sure we ate well!
