At the southern tip of the Andes in Chile lies Torres del Paine National Park. The Park is located in Chiles southernmost and largest region, Magellanes and Chilean Antarctica, where the main economic activities are sheep farming, oil extraction and tourism. The population density is sparse at 1.1 per km, but the regions main city, Punta Arenas, is home to a sizeable 120,000 people. The Park draws in approximately 100,000 tourists each year who visit the main attractions the Paine Towers, Los Cuernos, French Valley and Grey Glacier. The W trek and the Paine Circuit are popular routes.

    • Hike to Ascencio Valley for an iconic view of the Towers

Each day's trek was demanding whether it be the hilly terrain of the "Patagonia flat", hiking distance, steep trails, loose terrain or stream crossings. We had long full days. You definitely need to do some good training for this adventure. However, being surrounded by the spectacular scenery of glacial lakes and snow-capped peaks made it worth the effort. We saw a lot of backpackers laden down with huge packs of gear. I was really thankful to only be carrying a daypack. Before we left I had read that you can experience four seasons of weather in one day, so we came prepared with layers and rain gear. We went in March and one day it rained all day and all night long (which I don't think is normal), but it was still good hiking and the sun returned the next day. We learned to just go with it. It's part of the Patagonia experience. The domed huts at EcoCamp are simple, but nice with comfortable warm beds. Delicious meals - huge breakfast & lunch buffets with variety and natural foods. For the multi-course gourmet dinners we were given several choices, many based around traditional Chilean dishes with their own unique twist. All the staff, trekking guides and drivers were very friendly, helpful and hospitable. Very good quality facilities and equipment. The Ecocamp staff asked for comments and critiques and were open to suggestions as well as being accommodating. Besides the amazing scenery, Patagonia has interesting wildlife. The last day we did a fauna hike through grassla
