Overview

Book
Nepal is recognised to be one of the world's great mountain biking destinations and this superb cross-country bike ride, pioneered by KE, is one of our favourites and an acknowledged classic. Linking together a maze of remote dirt roads and village paths between Pokhara and Kathmandu, this is a brilliant mountain biking adventure in just a week and a half. Flying to Pokhara, we have a couple of days biking the area's classic routes, including the Kali Horseshoe, with superb views of the Annapurnas and of the beautiful Macchapucchare (Fishtail).

We then ride eastwards, via the Marsyangdi River and the ridge-top town of Gorkha. From here, we have devised a superb new 2-day section that completely avoids the main Pokhara to Kathmandu road and follows instead a radical route alongside the Ankhu Khola (one of the main tributaries of the Buri Gandaki River). Finally, beyond Trisuli Bazaar, we make the testing, mile-high, climb to the Kathmandu Valley rim, where we are treated to a breathtaking panorama of Himalayan peaks from our lunch stop at Kakani. The final afternoon's ride provides an entertaining downhill blast back to bustling Kathmandu, after which we can celebrate in style in the incomparable Nepalese capital. This is a trip at low altitude, with classic Himalayan trails and a generally very pleasant climate. Stunning scenery and great cycling across diverse terrain, together with the friendliness of the local people, make this an unforgettable experience.

    • Explore the ancient temples of Kathmandu

The trip was well planned by KE. Good hotels and camping spots. Our local guide was fantastic! My husband and I, along with the majority of the group, rented MTBs in Kathmandu. They worked out really well. Some people had brought their own saddles and other equipment for the bikes. We did not, but had no problems at all with the bikes. The group had a chef and his team joining the trip and they prepared excellent breakfast and dinners and sometimes lunches when we were cycling. The cycling were not very technical, but sometimes very tough due to long days with a lot of uphills. I believe quite a good physical condition is needed for this trip, but not too much technical skills. However some days we were offered to take more technical paths where some were cycling and other walking/carrying their bikes. A good mix of trails and concrete. We cycled through areas where I would not have been visiting otherwise and met the local people in all villages we cycled through. A lot of fun and super interesting. I'd recommend this trip to anyone who likes mountain biking and is up for a tough physical challenge and wants to meet great people from around the world. (we were from Sweden, Germany, England in our group)

We had an amazing action packed trip, started of by white water rafting near Pokhara followed by 9 days of superb X-C mountain biking. Pramod and the Nepalese cook team looked after us exceptionally well and provided a wide range of meals. Nights were warm and days were hot (up to 35C), so definitely no need for any warm kit. The X-C biking included a real mix of jeep track, single track downhill, a few k's of tarmac, the choice was limitless. Wild camping with bathing in the rivers was just amazing, the fireflies in the evening were just magic. Cycling through villages that were destroyed by the earthquake 12 mounts ago was a humbling experience, the local always greeted us with the customary greetings and welcome. A must-do adventure.

This was a 9 day sustained MtB journey with overnight camping so be prepared for a couple of tough days towards the end of the trip. It was hot and humid in March/April so we didn't need any warm clothing, even at night. The humidity meant misty weather. We only saw the Himalayas on one day, on the transfer day to Pokhara, but that was a great sight. The trail-side scenery and rural life is very varied and continuously interesting. The aftermath of last year's earthquake is evident in the Gorkha region but it was amazing to see how resilient and cheerful the villagers were. They locals are just so open and friendly despite having very hard lives (particularly the women). I found it quite humbling and would encourage others to go to Nepal and help to restore the levels of tourist spending. Our group was four riders and five support staff. It was extremely well supported by Katmandu-based Mountain Expeditions. Their bike guide, Pramod, is a top cyclist and all-round great chap. The chef and camping team were very good too. Thoroughly recommended. Stephen Olivant

I really enjoyed the variety experienced throughout the trip. The biking was excellent - but you also got to see and experience Nepal in a manner which it is difficult to imagine you could achieve in any other way. The pace / route turned out to be excellent. Day in Pokhara was good for assessing the group; other days were all varied and interesting. Our trip leader, Pramod, was difficult to fault - so I won't! The camping days were excellent - good locations, excellent support crew and well cooked (and varied) food.

The cook was a legend. Great variety and all good food. Anyone that can make a pizza on a camping stove deserves a medal! A brilliant trip. The biking far exceeded my expectations.

Your brochure and dossier were excellent and having been on the trip are very accurate in the descriptions of the trails (obviously...), these coupled with Tim's chat and slide show gave me all the information I needed to book the trip, and any queries I had were dealt with swiftly and clearly by the team. Upon arrival in Kathmandu, The Hotel Shankar was a great and unexpected suprise… Continue reading Promo, our leader, was great. Really enthusiastic and friendly with great local knowledge. He (and the other guys on the trip) were really patient with me, if I fell behind on climbing sections, offering loads of encouragement when needed (which was most of the time - I really dislike long climbs!) Overall the trip was up there with the best holidays I've had - great trails in epic scenery with a great group, meeting the friendliest locals on our journey, insane traffic of Kathmandu, rickety suspension bridges and all in top weather. The corker from gorka and ridge riders being definate highlights!
