Overview

Book
Our Tour of Corsica is a beautiful and challenging 1-week road cycling holiday which can rival any of the more famous Alpine tours. We begin in Bastia, a 15th century port with cultural links to Italy and its Genoese rulers of days long gone by. Our first 2 days of cycling take us around the northern headland of Cap Corse, through secluded coves and by way of the sun-kissed beaches of Corsica's north-west coast.

Then, after a deviation inland to the pretty village of Calenzana, it's back to the coast at the Golfe de Galeria for an undulating ride southwards with stunning coastal views to reach Porto, gateway to the stunning red granite Calanques and our overnight stop in Piana. Leaving the coast again, we climb to cross the island's highest road pass at the Col de Vergio (1478m) then descend to the former capital of Corte and turn to follow Corsica's mountainous spine southwards. Cycling through forest of Corsican pines beneath craggy mountains and passing through sleepy villages, we climb to cross a succession of passes including the Col Sorba (1311m) and the Col de Verde (1402m). From Zonza we return to the eastern side of the island via the Col du Bavella (1218m) and head north to Piedicroce hidden amongst the chestnut forests of Castagniccia, one of the least spoilt regions of Corsica. Our final day of riding crosses the Col de Prato (985m) and descends to Bastia in time for an afternoon stroll around the town, followed by a celebratory dinner.

Highlights

    • Dramatic red rock spires of the Calanques, rising out of the Gulf of Porto
    • The 30 kilometre climb to the Col de Vergio (1478m) highest on the island
    • Secluded beaches, sleepy villages, soaring peaks and forests of Corsican pines
    • Seven days of stunning coast and mountain road cycling in Corsica

Booked originally as a replacement for a Raid tour which did not happen, this was a great choice. Some challenging but manageable climbs, and some stunning and twisty descents run on mostly good roads and in ideal weather conditions. Daily picnic lunches were excellent. Accommodation was great, with evening meals often in beautiful locations, including a beach and a city square. Several early punctures on the way from the airport, caused by insufficient inflation. Make sure you pump up the volume on day 1. Overall a great trip.

Slick from start to finish – enjoyed all the cols, especially the two mountain days. May was a great time to visit Corsica, not too busy and the weather perfect for road biking. Thios trip will be hard to beat in terms of variety and stunning scenery. Where next?

Covering 750km in 6 days was just about right, tough but plenty of stops. The cols were not that steep and the coastal riding very beautiful despite the sea breeze! I enjoyed each place we stayed in but the last night in Piedicroce amongst the chestnut forests of Castagnaccia was a delight. Glenn was a great guide and George the perfect support with snacks and lunch waiting for me just when I needed a break!

I have cycled several trips with you, including the traverse of Bhutan and this trip exceeded all my expectations. The accommodation and food was top notch, good clean hotels in great locations – the sunset from the hotel in Piana particularly memorable. Corsica is a beautiful island and this trip covers it all – thank you for a great trip.

I cycled this route in 2013, just before the Tour de France landed in Corsica. I usually bike in the Alps and was blown away by the diversity of the riding. The wind caught me out going around the top of cap Corse but the ride down the coast to Porto was some of the best coastal riding I have done. Little detours inland through quiet Corsican villages was a treat and made me appreciate the chilled Corsican way of life.On the third day, we headed inland and over the cols, specially prepared for the tour, and guess what, all the speed bumps had been removed through the villages and there was plenty of new tarmac. Heading back up the east coast was the first straight road of the trip but we were soon going back in time through the chestnut forests of Castagniccia before arriving back in Bastia.Enjoyed the food, the beer and wine and the sheer diversity in just a week. Count me in for the first trip in 2014!

The scenery and the courses were varied, and changed every day. Rolling coastal roads etched into the side of the mountains with views that took you from the granite cliffs down to the azure blue sea, climbs up through multiple mountain passes that took your breath away in more ways then and then fantastic descents. It had everything I wanted in a bike tour and was well worth the trip.
