Overview

Book
This is your chance to join a KE reconnaissance expedition into a rarely-visited corner of the Nepal Himalaya; starting out amongst the weird and wonderful landscape of the ancient Buddhist kingdom of Mustang and heading up into the stunning Damodar Himal. Here, with views southwards to the Annapurnas and northwards into Tibet, youll have the opportunity to climb the straightforward Saribung Peak (6327m) before crossing a high and glaciated pass and trekking out through the valleys of Naar and Phu.

The initial approach to Mustang takes us through the Kali Gandaki (deepest valley in the world) and up into an arid and starkly beautiful region of Nepal, coloured red, grey and yellow by natural earth pigments and highlighted by picturesque white-washed villages and red-painted monasteries. After our first week of trekking, exploration and necessary acclimatisation, including 2 nights at the walled city of Lo Manthang, we head up into the Damodar Himal, to the lake and pilgrimage site at Damodar Kund (4890m) and then onwards to the Saribung Pass (6020m). Above the pass, the rounded snow-dome of Saribung Peak presents an obvious (and entirely optional) challenge and offers fantastic views of a collection of neighbouring peaks, including Khumjungar Himal (6759m) and Chhib Himal (6581m), as well as views across the nearby border into Tibet. Then, descending from the pass, we find ourselves in pretty uncharted territory as we trek southwards to the isolated villages of Phu and Meta and exit to the popular Annapurna Circuit at Koto. Within just 3 weeks, this is a classic Nepalese trekking adventure topped off with an achievable 6000 metre peak and a selection of the best Himalayan mountain views.

In 2014, our Nepalese agent provided the services for a group from the French adventure travel company Allibert who successfully completed this itinerary. We also know that the mountain has been climbed on several occasions in the last 5 years. Then, in November 2017, a KE group attempted this itinerary, but was turned back before reaching Saribung Peak by extremely cold temperatures. We are running the trip 3 weeks earlier this time to hopefully provide the group with more comfortable conditions. No KE group has traversed the remote Damodar Himal and there is still a good degree of uncertainty about the day-to-day itinerary which is why we are offering this trip as a reconnaissance.

A superb trek, full of exceptional views. The hardest, but most rewarding trek I have undertaken. Travelling through the Mustang was beyond expectation in terms of stunning views and cultural experience. Crossing the Damodar Himalaya, camping, was a true wilderness experience. Challenging and remote. A real achievement. Train hard, take proper cold weather kit - and take enough battery and photo capability!

This is a fantastic trek. The scenery in Mustang is incredible and the walk out past Phu is seriously impressive. The peak is a bonus but it's the scenery throughout that makes this such a great trip. The schedule is demanding, the pass is high (6042 mtrs) and turning back is not really an option. So everyone needs to be confident that they can cope with the altitude. It's a windy area and gets very cold at the higher camps. You will be wearing gloves for many trekking days so make sure you have both trekking gloves and really warm high altitude mittens for the summit day. Several camp sites are on rough moraine so take a thermarest or similar as the foam mat provided is not really sufficient on its own.
