From the canals of Venice to the historic streets of Rome, Italy is constantly familiar and endlessly surprising. Catch the top-tier sights – Venice’s bridges, Pisa’s Leaning Tower and Rome’s Colosseum – and combine them with the humble delights of the fine food of Tuscany, natural vistas and unearthed cultural treasures. This journey will have you living la bella vita in no time.

Highlights

    • Travel the romantic, winding waterways of Venice in a traghetto and lose yourself in the town's myriad alleyways – best done with a lot of time and no map
    • Hike to one charming village after another along the picturesque Cinque Terre, or take the train for a more leisurely experience without missing the stunning scenery
    • Discover the abundance of art and culture in Florence, Italy's outdoor museum. Be sure to visit the Accademia, home to the famous David by Michelangelo
    • Fall in love with Rome, a city that makes you gasp at every turn and effortlessly combines ancient history with modern architecture
    • Nestled in the postcard-perfect vineyards of Tuscany's Chianti region, your feature-stay on this trip is a five-star hotel housed in a former medieval monastery
    • Join a local shop-keeper for a Pesto making class in Levanto. Make your own pesto and enjoy it with a glass of wine afterwards
    • Relax in a local family’s garden surrounded by olive trees and vineyards and enjoy the local organic wine varieties produced by this family for centuries

The itinerary & tour leader couldn't have been better & the group we travelled with all got on so well. Reason we choose a tour was because group numbers aren't big which I think attracts a certain type of like minded people.

It's good to arrive a couple of days earlier to take in extra sights of Venice that otherwise won't be seen as there is insufficient time to take it all in on this trip, also booking in advance (for Venice eg doges palace etc) from Australia is advisable as you avoid the queues.

Travelling by train can be a bit hectic even with a small group so my advice would be to travel as light as possible. The smaller groups are very pleasant and getting to know everyone was fantastic. It was like family we all looked out for one another and had a great time, or if you didn't want to be socialable that was ok too

Our Italy tour was a fantastic way to see and experience places we wouldn't have got to as independent travellers. The benefits of transport and accommodation being arranged and the knowledge of our tour leader, Mattia, enhanced our travel experience.

As this trip had a lot of train travel would suggest packing lightly as the luggage had to be carried up and down stairs at the stations and then hauled onto the train itself

Be prepared to do lots of walking. Pre book as many skip the line tours as you can to ensure you have time to visit the places you want to see. Book extra nights in Rome either before or after the tour to properly see the amazing sites there. Take comfortable shoes. Don't overpack. There are LOTS of steps in Italy, so be prepared with comfy shoes and lightweight luggage.

Tour Operator

Peregrine Adventures

Our name stems from the word 'Peregrinate’, meaning to migrate, walk or take a pilgrimage – very fitting for our beginnings as a trekking company. Since our inception, we've broadened our horizons and now offer small group journeys in over 80 countries across all seven continents, which can be enjoyed by anyone with an enquiring mind who enjoys getting off the beaten track (without forgoing some of the comforts of home).

We are a company built by travellers for travellers. Take a walk around our offices and you’ll see the empty desks of people out on trips, or hear people swapping stories about a place they have just visited. Land at your destination and discover your tour leader is local to the region.

Wherever you travel with us we’ll take you to the major highlights as well as along the route less taken. This gets you closer to the local people and the culture you came to discover. We promise to share our knowledge and expertise with you, and ensure you will come home with stories you will tell for years to come.
