Overview

Book
This real adventure trekking holiday visits Inner Dolpo, one of the least accessible and yet most alluring corners of Nepal. Few travellers have penetrated to the heart of Dolpo, a region beautifully portrayed in Eric Valli's excellent film - 'Himalaya'. This is very much the land that time forgot, with a mix of ancient Tibetan religions and a hardy people who make their living through farming and through trade with both Tibet and Nepal. The spiritual heart of Inner Dolpo is the 'Crystal Mountain' and the 11th century Shey Gompa at its base. The region was visited in 1973 by Peter Matthiessen accompanying George Schaller, during his study of the rare Himalayan blue sheep and the even rarer snow leopard. Matthiessen's subsequent book detailing both his trek and his personal spiritual journey has become a classic of its genre. Flying to Dolpo's only airstrip at Juphal, our holiday adventure begins with a trek north to the lush green fields of Ringmo and the stunning blue Phoksumdo lake. After a day acclimatising in this beautiful spot we continue across the Kang La to Inner Dolpo and Shey Gompa. Our return route crosses the Shey La to the major Dolpo settlement of Saldang and the Jeng La to reach Dho Tarap. We round off this special trekking holiday with a descent of the impressive Tarap Gorge to Tarakot and return to Juphal. For the connoisseur of Himalayan trekking and for anyone who wishes to visit an unspoilt region of near mythical status, this trek is an absolute must.

Phoksumdo Lake area was very colourful with dramatic scenery. Saldang with the views of Northern Dolpo and Tibetan plateau was excellent. The climb up to Kang La pass, with super views after a day of snow up to Snowfields camp was amazing. Steve Razzetti is brilliant - a legend.

The meals on trek where excellent with a good variety, well prepared and good portions. The cook team excelled being up early and all meals where on time. Many thanks. The cook even deputised as guide when one of the clients had to be airlifted out and Rob stayed behind to organise this.Having been delayed in Delhi on The Way out the group waited for us in Kathmandu and we made the internal flights, losing a day to bad weather. Rob took all these changes in his stride and kept us informed of all the itinerary changes on a daily basis, leading to a smooth holiday With no real hiccups.

Our experience was perfect. Great guide. Great Nepalese staff. Near perfect weather. A wonderful experience in all. This time of year be prepared for little local produce. The cook staff did a great job with minimal access to fresh produce etc. Their brand of curry is in just about everything, so if curry is not your favorite, ask ahead for specific possibilities. The trek is a hard one, with quite a bit of exposure here and there. Take their suggestion of getting into top shape prior to your trip seriously. As one needs to acclimatize to altitude, if exposure is not your thing try and find somewhere where you can "acclimatize" to exposure as well. Doing both of those will help you enjoy the trek and the views from the more serious exposure all the more! The tents were an issue for some on our trek. Understanding tensions on a tent to begin with will help. We had 0 problems with our tent! Realizing that due to space constraints the crew was not able to properly guy out the fly; and knowing how to relieve tension on the main tent structure helped us handle our own "tight zippers" with no trouble. Up above treeline be prepared for dust this time of year! We affectionately came to call it Dolpo dust. to you... if you fail to publish this in 3 weeks, do we get to pick the wine? ;-)

This remote region of Nepal is spectacular. The terrain is varied and provides much contrast, from alpine forests, to high passes above tree line, to dry, tibetan high-plateau. We saw only 3 or 4 other trekking groups. Culture is relatively uncorrupted by contact with westerners, esp compared to Annapurna and Everest regions. Our guide was an excellent guide. Cheerful, fun, and very attentive to needs of the group and staff. Highly recommended!

A fantastic experience, great variety of scenery and terrain. Just when you thought it couldn't get any better it did. Apart from the fantastic scenery there are many habitations you pass through, some beautiful monasteries and Phoksundo lake, a must. Our leader, sirdar, cook and crew were all first class and the internal flights, not to be missed.

This was my first visit to Nepal, I chose this specific trip having had my imagination fired after reading Peter Mathiessen's book The Snow Leopard some thirty years ago. The book recounts his search for the Snow Leopard along with the the field biologist George Schaller. Imagine my amazement and delight at meeting 83 year old George Schaller on the second morning of the trek, returning from a reconstruction of the original 1973 trek with Peter's son. He described his latest trek as a great walk and good exercise! The trek exceeded my expectations, from the green valleys, high passes, arid landscapes and distant snowy peaks. The variation, scale and grandeur was breathtaking, We met mule trains and yak caravans, were welcomed by happy adults and fun loving children in remote villages, proud of their heritage, the old ways still the norm, despite the advent of some solar power. This was exposure to the remote hard life of inner Dolpo, we saw it under clear blue skies and warm daytime temperatures, how hard life must be when winter snows isolate is nearly impossible comprehend. This is an experience that will always live with me.
