Overview

Book
With its emerald-green tea plantations, high mountain ranges, vast forest reserves, tropical coastline, and colourful hindu and buddhist temples, few places can rival the geographical and cultural variety of Sri Lanka. Our two week walking and cultural discovery holiday takes in all the most famous sites and also takes us 'off the beaten track' to discover wild and secluded parts of this tiny paradise island. We've included a 2-day traverse of the spectacular Knuckles mountain range and time trekking through tea-country in the Namunukula range, across the famous Horton Plains to ‘World’s End, and a climb to the summit of the sacred Adam's Peak (2243m) to catch the sunrise. Sri Lanka is bursting with historical and archaeological highlights, so visits to the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the natural rock fortress of Sigiriya, the cave temples of Dambulla, the dutch fortress of Galle and the former capital of Kandy, home to the 'Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic', are also a shoo-in! Also included is some well-earned R&R time on the beautiful south coast beaches of Mirissa and wildlife safaris in two of Sri Lanka’s quieter National Parks, Udawalawe and Wilpattu. Much more than a walking tour, this holiday offers a real insight into Sri Lankan culture, both historic and modern, and takes you to the heart of this spectacular island nation.

    • Watch the sunrise from the summit of Adam’s Peak and climb Lion’s Rock

I highly recommend the trip because of its incredibly diverse itinerary, mixing hiking with first-class cultural sights, wildlife and even the beach.I'm a fan and veteran because of your exotic trip destinations, itineraries and the value of your trips for the money.

I particularly enjoyed the walking in spite of the torrents of rain!I would remove the monastery from the itinerary as when we visited it we only saw junior monks. I don't think staying at the monastery would add as much value as I experienced when I stayed in very active monasteries in Burma.I had my birthday on the trip and it was great how Nuwan organized a birthday cake and the driver/assistant put baloons and a message to me in the bus. It was lovely, thank you to the team!I particularly liked the fact that we were given reusable boxes for our packed lunch.I've traveled with you before and have been very happy with the experience. I traveled with KE in preference to other companies because I prefer the smaller groups, as they don't overwhelm the places we visit so much.

This is our first trip with KE and measures up well against others we have done. This is particular good trip if you want to mix seeing various regions of the country , some wild life, understand the history and culture with some days of trekking thrown in. The itinerary is full particularly visiting temples on the first two days. Early starts are the norm in order to see the wild life in the two Nature Parks or see the sun rise on the walking days, in retrospect worth it ! The trekking days are varied (Knuckles and through the Namunukula Range the highlights for us) and demanding at times especially Adam's Peak! most of them got us above the clouds. Along with your walking boots I missed taking off road trainers that would have been better as the conditions were dry for some of the hill walks and in particular Adams Peaks which is mainly stone steps. Meals were mainly buffets that worked well across the group , the local food ( curry) is very good especially if you like vegetarian and fish. Accommodation exceeded our expectations. Lion Rock was spectacular. We had good weather with only one short burst of rain but when it came you knew about it! Local Guide was very knowledgable attentive and a good sense of humour!!. The change of the itinerary this year has reduced the travelling time in the bus and I think makes a more balanced trip.

Parts of the itinerary (eg. UNESCO sites, Lions Rock, Adam's Peak, Galle, & some optional extra cost activities) are real highlights of this trip. Much of the rest is over "hyped" ( in particular Arugam Bay, Yala jeep safari & the Knuckles jungle walking) falling far short of expectations raised by the itinerary's hyperbole. The amount of time driving seemed excessive throughout (& particularly so in the last 2 full days which were virtually solid driving) notwithstanding trying to cram a lot into 2 weeks. The local guide (Nuwan) proved to be a real star; he worked hard & with incredible enthusiasm to make up for the local agent's deficiencies or incompetence (or both) which included failing to book a hotel. Walkers (the local agent) had already failed to collect us from Colombo airport for our private pre paid transfer 2 days prior to the group. Overall despite enjoying some highlights & experiencing lovely welcoming hospitality I cannot recommend this trip with the present itinerary. (I note KE are still using an image of the lion's paw on the itinerary download which I assume is a scan of an image from a Juergen Schreiber postcard for sale in Sri Lanka.)

I have just returned from this trek and I cannot praise our guide - Nuwan - highly enough. He went above and beyond all expectations to ensure everyone had a memorable and fun Sri Lankan experience. Although we had a few days of heavy rain (and leeches) everything was fabulous. Standard of accommodation was excellent and food was delicious. Trekking was limited but we still made the most of what was on offer. Nuwan mixed it all up for us so we had variety, national parks, walks, mountains, beaches, trains, and local experiences. he loves his country very much and now we all love it too. It was a pleasure to have him as our guide.

Excellent, informative guide, Nuwan Athapattu, who coped admirably with a diverse group of 16, and resourceful when confronted with the apparent shortcomings of Walkers Tours that had failed to book one hotel. Also he was flexible with the schedule given the adverse weather conditions and mixed abilities of the group. Plus he covered for what seemed a lack of funding by Walkers Tours for the Yala National Park safari. Future travelers need to take note of the itinerary that some days there is a lot of coach travel. Food excellent as was most accommodation.
