Overview

Book
Centre-based at a comfortable mountain hotel in the pretty spa town of Ax-les-Thermes, this walking holiday will highlight the best of Midi - Pyrenees, with a series of short and scenic day-walks. Accessed through Toulouse, this part of the Pyrenees is home to some great peaks and wild landscapes. Our itinerary takes in the best circular loops and summits of the area. With views of Andorra we have a walk to the summit of Pic de Tarbesou (2364m) and we pass several peaceful, hidden, high lakes. Some of our walks pass through the cool forest whilst other take us on high plateaus to mountain refuges. We may spot some marmots, chamois and possibly the odd golden eagle. The town of Ax-les-Thermes is famous of its natural thermal baths and we have included a couple of visits here to relax in style after a day in the hills. We also have a free day at the end of this walking holiday in the Pyrenees to allow us to fully unwind and enjoy this town and surrounding areas. With the majority of holidaymakers in Ax being French we can truly immerse ourselves in the French way of life.

We had a great time. It was cushy compared to some of the treks we've done, since one is staying in a hotel, the same one, the whole week. Nothing against those other treks, but it was quite nice not to be in a tent! The hikes were very well chosen, taking into account late snow. Our guide, Cyrille, was knowledgeable, nice, funny, and sweet. He spoke excellent English and, of course, French. Aside from us two from Canada (we have some French but, in all honesty, we functionally speak just English) and a couple from Russia (Russian and English, but no French) everybody else was from France. Although some were completely fluent in English, not everybody was, so we got the dual-language coverage from Cyrille--it was great! If I could have done that for a few more weeks, my French would be a lot less pathetic! (First time on a KE trek with no Brits. Hmmmm...) Anyhow, people were really nice. We were staying in Toulouse after the week of trekking, and one of our trekmates lives there, so she showed us around one afternoon. How kind! The hotel was fine, and the cook was excellent. He handled my vegetarianism with aplomb. Not sure how he'd have done if I were vegan. I think it might be impossible to be vegan in France :-) The hiking really is beautiful--varied landscapes and lots of history. I'll try to post some pics. I highly recommend the trip. The rating is right. Though there were some ascents that felt like work, there was nothing that would push it out of the 4-range.

I had a wonderful time in a group of French speakers where I was the only English person. The guide was very professional and translated everything that I didn't quite get. The other members of the group were also very hospitable. Beautiful walks every day, even in the rain. The hotel was plain but clean. Food was amazing and they were able to cater for a varied range of diets. I could have done all the walks unguided as there was nothing at a level I needed a guide for, however the guide made all the difference in terms of explanations about the history and culture of the Pyrenees.

These were fascinating walks in the Pyrenees, in a beautiful area with a guide who went the extra mile to cater for our needs. He was very knowledgeable and informative as well as bringing a real sense of fun to the trek. The other participants on the trek were all French speakers who made us feel very welcome and which added to the interest - some spoke very good English. The food and accommodation were excellent and Ax-les-Thermes is a beautiful small spa town in the Pyrenees. The walking was easily paced and my wife and I both thoroughly enjoyed this holiday.

Overall, I really enjoyed this holiday. The guide Cyril was very kind, helpful and knowledgeable about the local area, flora and fauna. The area was beautiful. Being about to visit the local thermal baths was an added bonus. I had two difficulties about this holiday. The first was that I was the only English speaker in the group. This could pose a problem for some people. The guide Cyril had good English and ensured that I was included in what was happening. However, I found the social side of the holiday difficult which was a pity as I was a solo holiday-maker. I was not informed of this in advance by KE Adventure. The second aspect that I was disappointed about was the transfer arrangement at the end of the holiday. The documents from KE said that the transfer would coincide with the flights to London. My flight left before those flights so I had to book an additional night's accomodation in Toulouse. As I was the only client leaving by plane, I am disappointed that KE did not offer to transfer me earlier. I have already contacted KE about these two concerns. Potential clients should perhaps enquire if there will be other English speakers on the group and also if the transfer arrangements could be adjusted if necessary.
