Overview

Book
An exciting and challenging walking holiday adventure trekking in the Jotunheimen region of Norway. Known in Norse mythology as the Land of the Giants, the Jotunheimen is the biggest and most impressive mountain region in Norway. With a network of good paths and excellent mountain huts, this is a simply superb area for trekking amongst dramatic peaks and glaciers. After transferring from Oslo, our first walking day is an acknowledged classic, trekking along the airy Besseggen Ridge which divides two lakes, one blue, the other green. This is probably the most famous and best mountain walking route in Norway. After a short boat ride we then walk through the Urdadalen Valley to reach Spiterstulen, our base for the next 3 nights. We then attempt the summit of Galdhopiggen (2469m) a contender for the title of the highest mountain in Norway before spending a day roped up trekking on the splendid Svellnosbrean Glacier. Trekking out towards the west, through some of the wildest Jotunheimen landscapes, we overnight in splendidly located refuges and old farmsteads, finally walking down to the roadhead via the magnificent valley of Utladalen with its 200 m waterfall. This is the finest mountain walking adventure holiday in Norway!

We had a superb leader in every way. He set an excellent pace every day, without too much regimentation. He is a mine of information on plants, glaciers and the mountain environment. He is also very amusing at times and has a good sense of humour.

We had an exceptional leader in every respect.. The holiday was even better than expected. I most enjoyed climbing Galdhopiggen and Glittertind under winter conditions, trekking along the route and beautiful valleys, hardly seeing another person than our group. Picking and eating wild berries under our leader's direction. Suggestions for improvement: It was pretty near perfect as it was!

This hut-to-hut trek was a magnificent experience, allowing for a complete immersion into the spectacular Jotunheimen landscape. The scenery is breathtaking and ranges from the awe-inspiring to the otherworldly. Our guide (Jakob) was wonderful and not only did he lead a very large group over challenging terrain safely and with confidence, and shared his expertise and knowledge along the way, but he also had a cracking sense of humour and was a joy to spend time with. The itinerary was varied and interesting, particularly during the first 3 days which included the marvellous ascent of Galdhopiggen. The second half of the week didn't have quite as many highlights and wasn't as challenging as the first half - we weren't able to attempt the ascent of Kyrkja due to poor weather and the last three days were therefore a little less thrilling. Even so, the holiday exceeded my expectations on all fronts. My only complaint would be the large group size - there were 15 of us (plus 2 guides), which is the largest group I've ever trekked with, by far. Such a large group can be difficult to manage and this was most obvious on the glacier day - with 12 of us roped up to a guide, progress across the glacier was fraught and frustratingly, painstakingly slow. Compared to prior glacier walks I've done, I did not feel I got very much out of this experience. In addition, the large group size also resulted in a huge range in walking pace, which our guide did his best to manage. I personally like t

My 5th tour with KE and my 5th 5* review. Wonderful traverse of the Jotunhieman; climbing the highest peak north of the Alps and finishing at a lovely rustic farm stay near sea level. The guides Jacob and Samuel were wonderful and the group dynamic was exceptional. My only criticism is that it would have been nice to have had a native Norwegian as one of the guides, to get a true insight of the country beyond the mountains.
