Overview

Book
Straddling northern Italy and Slovenia, the limestone massif of the Julian Alps is at its wildest and most impressive in the Triglav National Park. Similar to the Dolomites, the Julian Alps form the northernmost part of the Dinaric Alps and are seemingly designed for perfect mountain walking holiday. The stunningly beautiful reserve area of the Triglav National Park extends across a mountainous region of alpine pasture, pine forest, clear streams and rocky lakes, which is served by a number of well-established mountain huts and crossed by several superb waymarked trekking routes. Although not as high as the Western Alps, these mountains are spectacularly rugged and offer simply brilliant high-level alpine style walking. From the lakeside town of Bled, we transfer to the start of our walking near to the lake of Bohinj (Bohinjsko Jezero) and from here make an ascent of Crna Prst (1844m.) which overlooks the lake. Maintaining our height, we spend the next 3 days trekking on a wonderful ridge, traversing 2000 metre peaks, high above lush alpine valleys before crossing the Skrbina Pass (1891m). A gentler walking day in the valley of the 7 lakes,' leads to the foot of the highest mountain in Slovenia, the spectacular triple-summitted Triglav (2864m). The climb to the top is airy, with some scrambling and sections of fixed cable - but the view is described by Baedeker as "... one of the most sublime among the Alps." We can look forward to extensive views across the Julian Alps and over the Karavanke and Kamnik Alps into Austria. This most memorable of mountain walking days provides a fitting climax to a brilliant week's walking holiday in Slovenia. If you are looking for a superb week of hut-to-hut alpine trekking, this holiday walking across the Julian Alps of Slovenia to the summit of Triglav is hard to beat.

Is this holiday for you?

This is real mountain trekking journey with significant amounts of ascent and descent on most days. The trails are predominantly good but there are sections of rocky ridgewalking. We will be walking for between 5 and 8 hours each day. There is some exposure at times and especially on the final 2-hour ascent from the Kedarica Hut to the summit of Triglav, where there are sections of route which are equipped with fixed cable. This trekking holiday is suitable for regular hillwalkers, looking for an excellent week's mountain walking in a largely undiscovered part of the world. For 5 nights we will stay in mountain huts which are mostly inaccessible by vehicle and this means that group members will carry all of their personal equipment throughout the trip. Considering that all bedding is provided in the huts this need not mean carrying a large or heavy backpack. However, the fact that this holiday is not vehicle supported does have a big influence on the overall grading.

Highlights

    • Climb to the summit of Slovenia`s highest mountain - Triglav 2864m
    • Perfect introduction to easy Via Ferrata and alpine scrambling
    • Post-trek chill-out time based in picturesque Lake Bled

I enjoy point to point trekking, and the itinerary and pace suited me perfectly. The scenery in the high mountains was amazing! We were particularly lucky in the designated guides, and in a group of people who got on extremely well with each other. Overall a tremendous holiday that I would highly recommend.

I cannot say enough good things about our guides. They took their jobs so seriously on the trail, watching out for everyone, with an incredible ability to pay attention to what was going on with each group member. They also took the time to train us on the trail about foot placement, breathing, everything to make us more successful. They were friendly, fun, and amazingly patient with any who lagged behind. They were also willing to help each of us in an individualized way. When a group member fell and cut open his head, they acted professionally in taking care of that member and the rest of the group on the tricky descent in the rain. THE BEST GUIDES YOU COULD HAVE!!!

Our guide was great, he took care of everything for us from translating to looking after us throughout the days. Top guide. Gave us lots of sight seeing and restaurant recommendations for after the hike also. I loved everything about this trip. We were well looked after in every hut, the food was good, and everyone was really friendly. The terrain is amazing! It's very different to Scotland and every day was something different and interesting. Loved this holiday. One happy person. Great trip all round, would to it again in a heart beat!

Our trip leader was a very relaxed tour leader, sometimes well ahead of the group, but certainly very service minded when arriving at the huts explaining all facilities, hassling along food service etc. His guiding on climbing Triglav was very good and highly responsible. The trek in Triglav National Park was lovely with beautiful montain scenery. Not sure I particularly enjoyed climbing Triglav..., but feels like a great achievement!
